Replace the keyboard without replacing the top case

Replacing only keyboard without full top case assembly.

Today I show how you can replace only the keyboard without replacing the full laptop top case even though the keyboard is not removable. This is a DIY hack so proceed at your own risk but I guess you have nothing to lose anyway.

You will need a cheap disposable soldering iron as we are going to melt some plastic. A $3.99 iron from Harbor Freight will work just fine for that. Prepare to work in a well ventilated area because it’s going to stink.

Taking apart Lenovo ThinkPad L480 business laptop (type 20LS, 20LT).

In this guide I will be taking apart a Lenovo ThinkPad L480 (type 20LS, 20LT) business laptop. The disassembly process is pretty much straightforward except for the keyboard removal.

Here are some pros and cons of Lenovo ThinkPad L480 design I found during the disassembly process:
– All screws on the base cover are captive screws which is very convenient for in-field repairs.
– All major components are easily accessible after the base cover is removed.
– It supports a regular 2.5″ hard drive and PCIe NVMe M.2 solid state drive.
– You need a special tool to remove the keyboard (there is a workaround).
