In this guide I explain how to disassemble an HP Pavilion 15-ec series gaming laptop. In this particular case I’m taking apart an HP Pavilion 15-ec-0751ms model.

All disassembly steps should be identical or very similar for the following models:
– 15-ec0013dx, 15-ec0095nr, 15-ec0043ax, 15-ec0035au, 15-ec0001ca, 15-ec0079ax
– 15-ec1010nr, 15-ec1073dx, 15-ec1023ax, 15-ec1512ax, 15-ec1050ax, 15-ec1023ax
– 15-ec2121nr, 15-ec2021nr, 15-ec2097nr, 15-ec2150ax, 15-ec2008ax, 15-ec2004ax, 15-ec2146ax, 15-ec2145ax, 15-ec2075ax, 15-ec2076ax

For this disassembly I’ll be using these tools: PH0 Phillips screwdriver, case opener tool, tweezers.

Bottom cover removal

Remove four long screws from the top and three short screws from the bottom.

Insert a case opener tool between the bottom cover and the palmrest assembly. Pry up the bottom cover.

Continue removing the bottom cover with your hands.

Battery removal and replacement

Remove four screws holding the battery in place.

Unplug the battery cable from the connector on the motherboard.

Remove the battery.

If you need to replace the battery, you can find a replacement using this model number PG03XL or HP spare part number L48495-005. Use genuine HP battery if possible.

Hard drive removal and replacement

Let’s start the hard drive removal with releasing the SATA cable.

Here’s how to disconnect the connector and release the hard drive cable. Lift up the right side of the connector (red arrow) to unlock it. After that lift up and remove the cable (yellow arrow).

Remove three screws holding the hard drive in place.

Remove the hard drive.

In this particular laptop there was no real hard drive installed, it was just a place holder.

When you install a real drive instead, you’ll have to transfer the SATA cable and mounting brackets to the new drive.

You can use any 2.5″ SATA hard drive here, preferable a solid state drive.

Memory removal and replacement

HP Pavilion 15-ec-0751ms laptop has two memory (RAM) slots but only one memory module installed.

This model can handle up to 32GB RAM (2x16GB modules) total. You should use DDR4-3200 memory modules.

This laptop can run in dual-channel memory mode which is more efficient and faster than single channel. In order to run in in dual-channel you need to install identical size and speed RAM modules in both slots.

SSD removal and replacement

Remove one screw securing the solid state drive (SSD) and the heatsink. Pull the SSD out.

Carefully separate the SSD from the heatsink. It might be necessary to apply some reasonable force is the drive got stuck to the heatsink.

Now you can replace the SSD with a new one if necessary.

This laptop uses M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen3 SSD.

Cooling fans removal and replacement

Remove five screws holding both cooling fans in place.

Un-route cables from the left and right sides of the fans.

Disconnect fans cables from the motherboard.

Remove the left fan first. After that remove the right fan.

The left fan and the right fan are identical and interchangeable.

Here’s HP spare part number for the fan: L77560-001.

DC jack removal and replacement

The power connector (DC jack) is mounted under the display hinge. Remove three screw securing the hinge.

Open the hinge as it shown on the picture.

Unplug the DC jack cable from the motherboard.

Remove and replace the DC jack harness if necessary.

Here’s HP part number for the replacement DC jack harness: L71031-Y14.

Other internal components removal

The left USB port is located on a separate board which can be easily removed and replaced. This board is secured in place by two screws.

The wireless card is replaceable. Simply remove one screws and disconnect two antenna cables. After that you can remove the wireless card.

The touchpad is secured to the palmrest assembly by six screws.

The keyboard in HP Pavilion 15-ec series laptop is permanently riveted to the palmrest assembly.

In this guide I’ll be taking apart Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (type 20MF) laptop.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme design highlights:
– This model supports two PCIe NVMe solid state drives.
– There are two memory slots on the motherboard.
– Both cooling fans are attached to the heatsink.
– DC jack is attached to a cable.

For this disassembly you will need just one basic tool – Phillips screwdriver.

Bottom cover removal

Unscrew seven captive screws holding the bottom cover. These screws will remain attached to the cover when unscrewed.

Remove the bottom cover starting from the back side of the laptop.

Battery removal and replacement

Remove four screws securing the battery.

The battery cable connector is a little bit tricky. Don’t just pull it up, you can damage the connector.

Carefully lift up the right side of the connector to release it from the connector housing on the motherboard.

Now lift up the connector while moving to the shown direction to separate from the housing.

When you remove the battery it will be necessary to un-route speaker cables from the guided path on the bottom of the battery.

You can find a new replacement battery using model name L17C4P72 or Lenovo part number 01AY969. I recommend using genuine Lenovo batteries.

Memory removal and replacement

There are two memory (RAM) slots on the motherboard.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (type 20MF) laptop can handle up to 64GB RAM (2x32GB modules).

You can use DDR4-2666 or DDR4-3200 SODIMM modules.

I recommend using two identical size/speed RAM modules in both slots so it operates in dual-channel mode.

SSD removal and replacement

Remove one screw holding the solid state drive (SSD) in place.

Lift up the right side of the SSD and pull it out of the slot.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme laptop can support two M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen3 SSDs.

Do not remove blue thermal pad. Install new SSD right on top of it.

Cooling fans removal

Both cooling fans are attached to the heatsink.

Separate the wireless antenna cables and the webcam cable from the guided path on the left side of the fan.

Carefully pull the white connector to the left to disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard.

Now move to another fan. Separate the display cable from the fan and disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard.

Unscrew five captive screws attaching the heatsink to the processor. These captive screws will remain attached to the heatsink.

Carefully lift up and remove the cooling fan assembly. If thermal grease is dry, it might be necessary to apply some reasonable force to separate the heatsink from the chips.

Here’s the picture of the other side of the cooling fan assembly.

If you need to replace the cooling module, you can find a new one using this Lenovo spare part number: 01YU923.

Power connector removal and replacement

In this laptop the power connector (DC jack) is attached to a harness and can be easily removed and replaced without de-soldering the jack.

Remove four screws securing the display hinge and the DC jack bracket.

Lift up and remove the DC jack bracket.

Open the display hinge as it shown on the following picture. The hinge has to be opened up because the DC jack LED is mounted under the hinge.

Now you can access the DC jack.

Disconnect the DC jack cable from the motherboard and remove it.

You can find new replacement DC jack harness using this Lenovo part number: 01YU754.

In this guide I disassemble a Lenovo Yoga 7 15ITL5 (model 82BJ0003US) laptop.

Lenovo Yoga 7 15ITL5 design highlights:
– This laptop has a PCIe Gen3 NVMe solid state drive installed.
– All memory is onboard – permanently soldered to the motherboard.
– The cooling fan is attached to the heatsink but can be removed.
– The keyboard is riveted to the top case.

For this disassembly you will need three essential tools: T5 Torx screwdriver, PH0 Phillips screwdriver. A case opener tool and tweezers are optional.

Bottom cover removal

Remove seven Torx screws holding the bottom cover in place.

I’m using a case opener tool to separate the bottom cover from the palmrest assembly.

Continue removing the bottom cover with your hands.

Battery removal and replacement

Remove five screws securing the battery. Don’t forget one screw in the middle of the battery. This screw is easy to overlook.

Lift up the battery and disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard.

To disconnect the cable, simply pull the black connector out.

If you need to replace the battery, you can find a new one using this model number L19M4PDC. I recommend using only genuine Lenovo batteries.

Solid state drive removal and replacement

Remove one screw holding the solid state drive (SSD) in place.

Pull the SSD out of the slot to remove it.

As you noticed, the SSD is wrapped in a black mylar cover.

Remove one screw attaching the SSD to the mounting bracket.

It’s a 512GB type 2242 M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. Lenovo part number 5SS0W76178.

If you are replacing or upgrading the SSD, you can install a type 2280 (regular size) PCIe NVMe Gen3 SSD instead of the original type 2242 (short) SSD.

Cooling fan removal and replacement

Remove three screw (red) from the cooling fan. Unscrew three captive screws (red) from the heatsink.

Disconnect the cooling fan cable from the motherboard.

Remove the cooling fan assembly from the laptop.

Remove five screws attaching the fan to the heatsink.

Now you can separate the cooling fan from the heatsink.

Here’s the other side of the fan.

You can find a new replacement fan assembly using this Lenovo part number AT1RY001VV0.

Other internal components

The finger scanning device is mounted under a metal bracket and cab be easily removed and replaced.

The power button is located on a separate circuit board.

The wireless card is easily replaceable too. In order to remove the wireless card it’s necessary to remove one screw and disconnect two antenna cables.

The touchpad is mounted under a metal bracket.

The keyboard in Lenovo Yoga 7 15ITL5 laptop is riveted to the top case assembly.

In this guide I will be taking apart an HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13t-aw000 laptop. You can use this guide for replacing or upgrading the SSD, replacing the battery, cleaning or replacing the cooling fans and accessing other internal laptop components.

All disassembly steps will be identical or very similar for HP Spectre x360 13t-aw100 and 13t-aw200 models.

HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13t-aw000 design highlights:
– This model supports one M.2 PCIe NVMe solid state drive.
– Memory is not removable. It’s permanently soldered to the motherboard.
– The wireless card is not removable – also soldered.
– Both cooling fans are permanently attached to the heatsink.

For this disassembly process you will need these essential tools: T5 Torx screwdriver, PH0 Phillips screwdriver, fine tweezers and case opener tool (optional).

Bottom cover removal

There are four screws hidden under the upper bottom cover foot. Remove the foot, it’s attached to the cover with adhesive tape.

Remove four Phillips screws and two Torx screws.

Start separating the bottom cover from the rest of the laptop using a case opener tool. It might be necessary to wiggle to cover in order to release hidden latches holding it in place.

Remove the bottom cover.

Battery removal and replacement

Remove six screws holding the battery in place.

Lift up the battery and disconnect the cable from the motherboard.

You can find a new replacement battery using the HP spare part number L60373-005 or battery model number RR04XL. I recommend using genuine HP batteries.

SSD removal and replacement

In this laptop the solid state drive (SSD) is hidden under the metal cover.

Lift up and remove the SSD cover.

Remove one screw securing the SSD.

Pull SSD out of the slot to remove it.

HP Spectre x360 13t-aw000 supports M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen3 SSD type 2280.

Cooling fans removal and replacement

In this laptop both cooling fans are permanently attached to the heatsink. If one of the fans failed, it’s necessary to replace the entire heatsink assembly.

Peel off the black mylar cover.

Both fan cable connectors are secured by clear plexiglass covers.

Peel off plexiglass covers from both connectors. There is adhesive tape holding it in place.

In order to disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard carefully lift up the connector.

Disconnect the second fan cable.

Peel off clear plexiglass cover securing the wireless card antenna cables.

Disconnect both antenna cables from the wireless card. Gently lift up each connector to unsnap it from the wireless card.

Be very careful. In this laptop the wireless card is permanently attached to the motherboard and cannot be replaced if damaged.

Separate both antenna cables from the guided path on the side of the fan.

Remove eight screws attaching the cooling fan assembly to the motherboard.

Remove the fan/heatsink assembly.

You can find a new cooling fan assembly using this HP part number: L77388-001.

Here’s the other side of the assembly.

Don’t forget to clean up the processor and apply new thermal grease before installing the fan/heatsink assembly back in place.

Now you can access all other internal laptop components.

In this guide I disassemble a Dell Inspiron 7501 (model P102F) laptop.

Dell Inspiron 7501 design highlights:
– This laptop has two M.2 PCIe solid state drive slots.
– 8GB memory soldered to the motherboard.
– There is only one memory slot available for upgrades.
– Two types of batteries supported: 56WHr and 97WHr.
– Both cooling fans are easily removable.

The entire disassembly can be done with one basic tool – PH0 Phillips screwdriver. Case opener tool and tweezers are optional.

Bottom cover removal

Remove seven screws (red circles) holding the bottom cover. Unscrew two captive screws (yellow circles). Two captive screws will remain attached to the bottom cover.

In this step I’m using a case opener tool but you can use something similar, like a guitar pick for example.

Insert the tool between the bottom cover and the top case. Pry up the bottom cover.

Continue removing the bottom cover with your fingers.

Battery removal

Remove five screws attaching the battery to the top case.

Do you see an empty space on the left side? That’s how a larger capacity 97WHr battery fits into this laptop.

Lift up the battery and disconnect it from the motherboard.

In this particular laptop I had a standard 3-cell 56WHr battery installed. You can find a replacement using Dell part number 05D91C or battery type H5H20.

You can upgrade this battery to a larger 6-cell 97WHr battery type 6GTPY which is compatible with one of the following Dell laptop models:

• G7 17 (7700)
• Inspiron 15 7000 (7500)
• Inspiron 15 7000 (7501)
• Precision 5540
• Vostro 15 7000 (7500)
• XPS 15 (7590)

Memory removal and upgrade

Dell Inspiron 7501 laptop supports up to 24GB RAM (8GB onboard and 16GB removable). You should use DDR4-3200 memory module.

Onboard memory cannot be removed or replaced because it’s permanently soldered to the motherboard. If onboard memory fails, it is necessary to replace the entire motherboard.

The SODIMM memory (RAM) slot located under the black mylar cover.

SSD removal and replacement

Dell Inspiron 7501 laptop has two M.2 PCIe slots and can support two NVMe solid state drives (SSD).

In order to remove and replace the original SSD it’s necessary to remove the SSD cover first.

Remove one screw securing the SSD cover.

Remove the SSD cover.

Remove one screw securing the SSD.

Pull the SSD out.

In this particular case I have a 256GB Toshiba NVMe SSD type 2230 installed

If you wan to replace this drive with a regular size type 2280 SSD, it is necessary to move the SSD mounting bracket into different location.

Remove the mounting bracket.

Install the bracket as it shown on the following pictures. The screw mounting hole should be facing towards the edge of the laptop.

Now you can install a regular size type 2280 M.2 NVMe SSD into this laptop.

Don’t forget to install the cover which also works as a heatsink for the SSD. The blue stuff on the internal side of the cover is thermal pad.

Cooling fans removal and replacement

It’s very easy to remove and replace both cooling fans. Each fas is secured by two screws.

Remove four screws, disconnect both fans from the motherboard and remove them.

Here’s the right fan removed. If you need to find a replacement, you can search for Dell part number 0YND40.

Here’s the left fan removed. If you need to find a replacement, you can search for Dell part number 0KGH4R.

Power connector removal and replacement

The power connector (DC jack) is mounted under the left display hinge. Remove one screw from the hinge.

Open the display hinge as it shown on the following pictures. Remove one screw holding the DC jack.

Disconnect the DC jack cable from the motherboard and remove it. In this laptop the DC jack can be replaced without desoldering job, just replace the entire DC jack harness which has Dell part number 0MYXCJ.

Other internal laptop components

The wireless card is easily accessible. This is Intel Wi-Fi A/C/X + Bluetooth 5.0 card model AX201NGW. Dell part number 0XVV0P.

The I/O board (USB port, audio jack, SC card slot) also can be removed and replaced if necessary.

The touchpad is mounted under the metal bracket. After you remove five screws holding the bracket, you can access and remove the touchpad. Don’t forget to disconnect the touchpad cable before removing the bracket.

The keyboard in this laptop is not removable. The keyboard is permanently riveted to the top case. It’s possible to replace this keyboard without replacing the top case but it’s not easy.

In this guide I show how to disassemble an HP Pavilion 15-dk series laptop.

All disassembly steps should be identical or very similar for the following HP Pavilion gaming laptops:

HP Pavilion 15-dk series design highlights:
– This model supports two hard drives – 2.5″ HDD and M.2 NVMe SSD.
– There are two memory (RAM) slots which is very convenient for RAM upgrade.
– Both cooling fans are attached to the heatsink but they are removable.
– DC power jack is not soldered to the motherboard and can be easily replaced.

For this disassembly you will need the following tools: PH0/PH1 Phillips screwdriver, fine tweezers and case opener tool.

Bottom cover removal

Remove seven screws holding the bottom cover.

Using a case opener tool (or something similar), start separating the bottom cover from the rest of the laptop.

Continue removing the bottom cover with your fingers.

I found it easier to remove the bottom cover if you start working from the back side of the laptop.

Battery removal and replacement

Remove four screws attaching the battery to the laptop case.

Unplug the battery cable from the connector on the motherboard.

Carefully remove the battery.

Attention. One of the battery screw mounts (circled in yellow) is located under the memory module. Probably it’s better to remove the memory module first just in case or just pay attention while removing the battery.

If you need to replace the battery, you can find replacement using HP spare part number L48495-005 or battery model number PG03XL. I recommend using genuine HP battery.

Memory removal and replacement

As I mentioned earlier, this laptop has two memory (RAM) slots. This particular laptop was configured with just one 8GB DDR4 PC4-2666 SoDIMM module.

HP Pavilion 15-dk series laptop can be upgraded to 64GB (2x32GB) RAM. You can use DDR4-2666 SoDIMM or DDR4-3200 SoDIIM modules.

I recommend using two identical RAM modules in both slots so it operates in more efficient dual channel mode.

Hard drive removal and replacement

Let’s start with the regular 2.5″ SATA hard drive (HDD).

Even though in this particular laptop I had a dummy HDD placeholder installed, the removal steps will be identical for a real HDD.

Remove three screws attaching holding the HDD brackets and disconnect the SATA cable from the motherboard.

In order to release the SATA cable it is necessary to unlock the connector first. Lift up the locking tab (red arrow) to unlock the connector.

Remove the 2.5″ SATA hard drive (dummy placeholder in my case).

If you want to install a real hard drive instead, it is necessary to transfer the SATA cable and both mounting brackets to the new drive.

Here you can use any third party 2.5 SATA hard drive or preferably solid state drive.

SSD removal and replacement

The sold state drive is mounted under the aluminum cover. Remove one screw holding the cover and the SSD in place.

Remove the SSD cover.

Pull the SSD out of the slot and remove it.

HP Pavilion 15-dk series laptop uses M.2 PCIe NVMe solid state drive type 2280.

In this laptop we have 256GB Intel PCI-Express 3.0 x4 NVMe SSD model: HBRPEKNX0101AH.

Cooling fans removal and replacement

In order to remove the cooling fans it’s necessary to remove the entire heatsink assembly. Both fans are attached to the heatsink.

Let’s start disassembly with the right side (it’s the right side when the keyboard is facing up).

Remove three screws securing the right hinge cover.

Remove the right hinge cover.

Remove three screw securing the right hinge bracket.

Remove the right bracket.

Remove three screws from the left hinge cover.

Remove the left hinge cover.

Here’s HP part number for the left and right hinge covers: L56911-001.

Remove three screws from the left hinge bracket.

Remove the left bracket.

Remove seven screws attaching the heatsink assembly to the motherboard.

There are a few cables routed on the left and side sides of the fan.

Separate the DC jack cable, speaker cable and wireless antenna cables from the fan (yellow arrows).

Disconnect the right fan cable from the motherboard (red arrow).

Separate the display cable from the fan (yellow arrow). Disconnect the left fan cable from the motherboard.

Carefully lift up the heatsink assembly to separate it from the CPU and GPU chips.

Remove the heatsink assembly from the laptop.

Here’s the picture of the other side of the heatsink assembly.

Remove five screw attaching the right fan to the heatsink.

Now you can remove the right fan.

Remove four screws from the left fan and remove the fan.

Now you can clean up the heatsink and replace fans if necessary.

You can find replacement fans if you make a search using this HP spare part number: L56900-001.

DC jack cable removal and replacement

In HP Pavilion 15-dk series laptop the DC jack is attached to a cable and can be removed/replaced without desoldering.

Remove one screw from the metal bracket holding the DC jack in place.

Remove one screw from the USB/audio board.

Remove the DC jack bracket.

Move the USB/audio board aside. Lift up and remove the DC jack cable (power connector cable).

Here’s part number for the DC jack cable: L56904-001.

In this guide I explain how to disassemble a Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga (Type 20R5) laptop. The disassembly process is relatively simple and shouldn’t take much time.

Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga (Type 20R5) laptop design highlights:
– This laptop supports one PCIe NVMe solid state drive.
– Memory (RAM) is not removable. It’s permanently soldered to the motherboard.
– The cooling fan is attached to the heatsink.

For this disassembly you will need a Phillips screwdriver. Tweezers and case opener tool are optional.

Remove the stylus before removing the bottom cover.

Bottom cover removal

There are nine captive screws that hold the bottom cover in place. Unscrew all screws. They will remain attached to the bottom cover.

Using a plastic case opener tool (or something similar) start separating the bottom cover from the rest of the laptop. You will have to wiggle the bottom cover in order to disengage hidden latches and separate it from the laptop.

Continue lifting up the bottom cover until you can remove it completely.

Battery removal and replacement

There are five screws that hold the battery pack in place. Remove all five screws.

Disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard.

Lift up and remove the battery pack.

If you need to replace the battery, you can find a replacement using the model number L18C4P90 or Lenovo part number 5B10W13934. I strongly advise using genuine Lenovo batteries.

SSD removal and replacement

Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga laptop has only one PCIe slot for NVMe solid state drive (SSD).

Remove one screw holding the SSD in place.

Pull the SSD out and remove it.

If you need to replace or upgrade the SSD you can use any third party SSD made by Samsung, Crucial, Wester Digital, etc… This is M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD type 2280.

Wireless card removal and replacement

The wireless card is easily accessible and can be removed or replaced if necessary.

Disconnect two antenna cables from the wireless card. The black antenna cable is attached to the connector #1 and the gray cable to the connector #2. Remove one screw holding the wireless card.

Pull the wireless card out of the slot and remove it.

You can find and replacement wireless card using this Lenovo part number 01AX770. This is Intel 9560NGW Wireless-AC dual band 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth 5.0 card.

Cooling fan removal and replacement

In this laptop the cooling fan is attached to the heatsink and they have to be removed together.

Unscrew 6 captive screws holding the cooling assembly in place.

Unplug the cooling fan cable from the motherboard.

Lift up and remove the cooling fan and heatsink assembly.

You can find a new replacement fan if you search the part number 5H40S72913.

Display assembly removal

Remove five screws securing two brackets on the left and right sides of the motherboard.

Lift up and remove the left bracket.

Lift up and remove the right bracket.

Disconnect two display cables from the motherboard.

Here’s how to unlock the connector and release the cable.

Lift up the connector lock so it opens up at a 90 degree angle (red arrow). Lift up and remove the display cable (yellow arrow). Release another cable using the same technique.

Open the display panel 180 degrees and place the laptop on the desk as it shown on the following picture. Remove four screws securing the display hinges.

Now you can separate the display panel from the laptop body.

In this guide I explain how to disassemble an HP ZBook Firefly 15 G8 laptop.

HP ZBook Firefly 15 G8 design highlights:
– The laptop supports only one PCIe NVMe solid state drive.
– There are two memory slots with maximum of 64GB RAM supported.
– The cooling fan is easily accessible and removable.

The disassembly process is very simple and you will need just a Phillips screwdriver and optional tweezers.

Bottom cover removal

There are five screws securing the bottom cover. These are captive screws and you cannot remove them completely. When you unscrews these screws they will remain attached to the cover.

Start removing the bottom cover from the laptop on the back side around the display hinges area.

Remove the bottom cover completely.

Battery removal

Remove four screws securing the battery.

Disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard. Simply pull the cable connector out in the shown direction.

Remove the battery and replace it if necessary.

If you need to find a replacement battery you can search using the model number CC03XL or HP spare part number L77991-005.

Solid state drive removal

HP ZBook Firefly 15 G8 laptop supports only one internal storage drive. This is PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe M.2 2280 solid state drive (SSD).

Remove one screw securing the SSD.

Pull the SSD out to remove it.

Memory removal

HP ZBook Firefly 15 G8 laptop has two memory (RAM) slots. The slots are hidden under the metal cover.

The laptop can support up to 64GB (2x32GB) RAM total. From the factory it’s configured with DDR4-2666 memory. It’s possible to use DDR4-3200 as it’s backward compatible.

In order to access RAM slots you’ll have to pry up and remove the metal cover.

Now you can access and remove the memory module if necessary.

When you upgrade RAM, install identical memory modules in both slots so they run in more efficient dual-channel mode.

Cooling fan removal

Remove three screws securing the cooling fan.

Un-route the speaker cable from the left side of the fan.
Un-route the display cable and both wireless antenna cables from the right side of the fan.

Disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard.

Remove the fan. Now you can clean the fan or replace it if necessary.

Here’s a picture of the other side.

Fan model: Sunon EG75050S1-1C021-S9A.

Wireless card removal

Before removing the wireless card it’s necessary to disconnect antenna cables.

Lift up each antenna cable to detach them from the wireless card. Remove one screw securing the card.

Now you can pull the wireless card out.

This wireless card has HP spare part number L92724-005. This is Intel Dual Band 802.11ac 2.4Gbps WiFi Bluetooth 5.0 Card model AX201NGW.

In this guide I show step-by-step Dell G3 15 3590 (model P89F) laptop disassembly.

Dell G3 15 3590 design highlights:
– This model supports two storage drives: PCIe NVMe solid state drive and 2.5″ SATA hard drive.
– There are two memory (RAM) slots on the motherboard.
– The DC power jack attached to a harness and can be replace without soldering.
– Both cooling fans can be replaced without heatsink removal.

For this disassembly you will need only two essential tools: PH1/PH0 Phillips screwdriver and tweezers.

Bottom cover removal

Unscrew four captive screws located on the uppers side of the bottom cover. These screws are designed to remain attached to the cover.

Remove other six screws.

Start separating the bottom cover from the top case assembly with your fingers.

Continue removing the bottom cover on the back of the laptop. Wiggle it a little bit to separate from the display hinges.

Remove the bottom cover completely.

Battery removal and replacement

Remove two screws attaching the battery to the top case assembly.

Lift up and separate the battery from the top case. It will give you easy access to the cable connector.

Carefully unplug the battery cable from the motherboard. Don’t lift up the cable, just pull it out to the shown direction.

NOTE: in my case someone replaced the battery before and damaged the connector. That’s why you can see all connector pins exposed.

SSD/HDD removal and replacement

Dell G3 15 3590 (model P89F) laptop supports two storage devices. In my particular case I have only M.2 solid state drive (SSD) installed but the 2.5″ hard drive (HDD) mounting brackets and SATA cable are available.

Remove three screws fastening the HDD mounting brackets.

You will find the HDD SATA cable attached on the other side.

You can install any 2.5″ SATA hard drive here. All you need to do is attach the drive to the brackets and plug in the SATA cable.

This laptop is configured with a very small 512GB M.2 type 2230 Toshiba NVMe solid state drive (Dell part number 08C3CP).

Remove one screw attaching the SSD heatsink.

Remove the SSD heatsink.

Pull the SSD out of the PCIe slot.

Dell G3 15 3590 can be configured with a regular size M.2 type 2280 NVMe SSD but it is necessary to move the mounting bracket further from the PCIe slot.

Slide the SSD mounting bracket to the right to separate it from the top case.

Now turn the bracket 180 degrees so the screw hole located closer to the laptop edge. Install the bracket as shown on the following picture.

Now you can install a regular M.2 type 2280 SSD.

You can use any third party NVMe SSD such as Samsung, Western Digital, Crucial, etc…

Memory removal and replacement

Dell G3 15 3590 laptop has two removable memory (RAM) modules. You can find them under the black mylar cover.

This laptop can handle up to 32GB (2x16GB) RAM. Compatible memory type is DDR4-2666 or DDR4-3200.

Remove the memory modules and upgrade them if necessary.

Wireless card removal and replacement

Remove one screws from the wireless card bracket.

Carefully disconnect two antenna cables from the wireless card.

Pull the wireless card out of the slot.

You can find a new replacement wireless card using dell part number 0V91GK. This is DW1810 WLAN WiFi 802.11AC + Bluetooth 4.1 Band M.2 Card.

Cooling fans removal and replacement

This laptop has two cooling fans. Let’s remove the right fan first.

Remove two screws attaching the fan.

Carefully unplug the fan cable from the motherboard.

Remove the right fan.

Dell part number for the right fan is 0160GM.

Remove two screws from the left fan and disconnect the cable.

Remove and replace the left fan if necessary.

Dell part number for the left fan is 04NYWG.

DC jack removal and replacement

Remove two screws attaching the DC jack bracket.

Lift up and remove the bracket.

Disconnect the DC jack cable from the motherboard.

Remove the DC jack harness and replace it with a new one if necessary.

Dell part number for this DC jack harness is 0C2RDV.

I’m not going to remove the motherboard but it shouldn’t be difficult at this point.

By the way, the keyboard in Dell G3 15 3590 (model P89F) laptop is permanently attached to the top case assembly. Keyboard removal is not easy but possible.
