In this guide I will disassemble a Gateway NV57H57u in order to access and replace failed DC jack harness.

In my case the DC jack started failing and the laptop was charging only when the AC adapter plug positioned correclty.

Also, you can use this guide for removing the top cover assembly, replacing the keyboard or cleaning the cooling fan.

Before you start the disassembly process make sure it’s turned off.

STEP 1.

Slide the orange lock to the right to unlock the battery.

Lift up and remove the battery.

STEP 2.

STEP 3.

Under the service cover you can access the hard drive, both RAM (memory) modules and wireless card.

STEP 4.

Here’s how to remove the hard drive.

Slide it to the left side to disconnect from the motherboard.

Now you can lift up and remove the hard drive assembly.

STEP 5.

Remove one screw securing the optical drive.

Slide the optical drive to the left and

STEP 6.

Remove all shown screws from the bottom.

It’s not necessary to remove the wireless card for the purpose of my repair but I’ll show how to remove just in case in the following two steps.

STEP 7.

Disconnect both antenna cables from the wireless card.

Remove one screw securing the wireless card.

STEP 8.

Pull the wireless card from the slot.

STEP 9.

Now you can start separating the palmrest assembly from the bottom case. I’m using a guitar pick for that.

STEP 10.

Continue separating the palmrest assembly from the bottom case.

STEP 11.

Be careful, the trackpad cable still connected to the motherboard.

I’ll show how to unlock the connector and release the cable in steps 14-15.

STEP 12.

Lift up the keyboard assembly and move it towards the display so you can access the keyboard cable underneath the assembly.

STEP 13.

In order to remove the keyboard assembly and palmrest completely, it’s necessary to unlock three connectors and release cables.

Cables left to right:
– Power button cable.
– Trackpad cable.
-Keyboard cable.

STEP 14.

All three connectors are similar and here’s how to unlock them.

Slide the cable retainer (brown piece) towards the cable about 1-2 millimeters.

The retainer must remain connected to the base.

STEP 15.

On the following picture the same connector shown in the unlocked position.

Now you can pull the cable from the connector.

STEP 16.

Remove the keyboard assembly.

STEP 17.

Here’s the bottom side of the keyboard assembly.

I’m not going to separate the keyboard from the cover in this guide but it shouldn’t be very difficult.

I guess after you remove the screws, the keyboard can be separated from the cover and replaced (if necessary).

STEP 18.

Remove the palmrest/trackpad assembly.

STEP 19.

On the following picture the laptop is shown with the keyboard assembly and palmrest assembly removed.

The DC jack located in the upper left corner.

In a Gateway NV57H57u laptop the DC jack attached to a harness. If the jack failed, there is no need to solder anything. Just unplug the failed DC jack harness from the motherboard and replace it with a new one.

By the way, when the keyboard assembly removed, you can get some limited access to the cooling fan. It should be enough for cleaning.

If the fan is dusty, just blow compress air into the fan until it’s clean.

Unfortunately, in order to remove and replace the cooling fan it’s necessary to remove the motherboard first.

STEP 20.

The DC jack cable routed under the left speaker and we’ll have to remove the speaker.

Remove two screws securing the left speaker.

Disconnect the speaker cable from the motherboard.

STEP 21.

Lift up and remove the left speaker.

STEP 22.

Disconnect the display (video) cable from the motherboard.

STEP 23.

The DC jack cable connector located on the bottom side of the motherboard but it’s possible to replace the DC jack harness without removing the motherbaord.

STEP 24.

The DC jack connector located under the display connector.

When you unplug the cable pay attention how the DC jack cable connector is positioned.

Plugging it back as not as easy as disconnecting because the connector located on the bottom side of the motherboard.

STEP 25.

The DC jack harness routed under the left hinge.

Remove three screws securing the left hinge.

STEP 26.

Lift up the left side of the display assembly and move it a little bit away so you can access the DC jack cable.

STEP 27.

Lift up the DC jack from the case.

STEP 28.

Now you should be able to remove and replace the failed DC jack harness with a new one.

Here’s what I did in order to plug the new DC jack cable back into the motherboard.

Remove two shown screws securing the motherboard to the bottom case.

Now you can lift up the motherboard just enough to get a better access to the DC jack connector.

Plug in the cable and secure the motherboard.

Assemble the laptop back together following all disassembly steps in the reverse direction.

In the following guide I explain how to disassemble a Gateway NV series laptop. To be accurate, I’m fixing a Gateway NV53 (NV5302u). It also says model: MS2285 on the bottom.

I’m taking it apart in order to fix broken DC jack. The whole laptop has to be disassembled and motherboard removed.

Before you start make sure the computer is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

Remove five screws securing the hard drive and memory cover.
Remove the cover.

STEP 2.

Remove one screw securing the hard drive. In order to remove the hard drive, slide it away from the battery compartment and lift up.

Gateway NV53 uses a regular 2.5″ SATA HDD.

Both memory modules can be accessed through the bottom cover. It’s not necessary to remove memory modules for the purpose of this guide.

Gateway NV series maximum RAM capacity is 4GB. It means you can install up to 2GB memory module into each slot.
You should use DDR2 800MHz, PC2-6400 SODIMM modules.

STEP 3.

Remove one screws securing the DVD drive.

Pull the DVD drive out.

STEP 4.

Carefully disconnect two antenna cables from the wireless card. Simply grab the gold connector with your fingers and lift it up.

In order to remove the wireless card you’ll have to remove one screw and after that pull the card from the slot.

It’s not necessary to remove the wireless card for the purpose of my guide. You can leave it connected to the motherboard.

STEP 5.

Remove three screws securing the media button board cover.

STEP 6.

Lift up the media button board cover as it shown on the picture below. Continue separating it from the top cover with your fingers.

STEP 7.

Do not lift up the media button board cover too much, it’s still connected to the motherboard.

At this point we are not removing the cover, we just move it a little bit away in order to get access to the keyboard.

STEP 8.

Lift up the keyboard and place it upside down on the palmrest.

STEP 9.

Before removing the keyboard, it’s necessary to unlock the connector on the motherboard and release the cable.

On the following picture the connector shown in the locked state.

To unlock the connector, you’ll have to lift up the left side of the locking tab (brown) so it opens up at a 90 degree angle.

Be very careful, do not break this connector or your keyboard will never work again. Do not apply too much force to the locking tab.

On the following picture the connector shown in the unlocked state.

Now you can pull the cable and release it.

STEP 10.

After the cable released, you can remove the keyboard.

STEP 11.

Disconnect the media button board cable.

STEP 12.

Remove the media button board cover.

STEP 13.

Remove two screws securing display hinges on the bottom.

STEP 14.

Disconnect LCD cable connectors from the motherboard.

Pull wireless card antenna cables thought the opening in the top cover.

In some Gateway NV series you’ll have to disconnect one more cable. I pointed to the connector with a white arrow.

STEP 15.

Remove two screws securing display hinges.

STEP 16.

Now you can lift up and remove the entire display assembly.

STEP 17.

Remove all remaining screws from the bottom.

STEP 18.

Remove three screws securing the top cover.

Disconnect three cables from the motherboard.

STEP 19.

Start separating the top cover assembly from the base.

I’m using a guitar pick in order to crack the case.

STEP 20.

STEP 23.

Remove the motherboard.

STEP 24.

When the motherboard removed you can access the cooling fan assembly (heatsink and fan).

In order to remove the cooling assembly you’ll have to loosen four screws and disconnect fan cable from the motherboard. After that you should be able to lift up and remove the assembly.

Here’s why I was disassembling the laptop. The power connector is broken and has to be replaced.

The DC jack soldered to the motherboard and if you would like to fix it yourself, you have to have soldering skills. It’s not an easy job for a novice.

If you are replacing the inverter board, you’ll have to disconnect one more cable from the other side.

If your backlight problem related to the inverter, you can replace it now and assemble everything back together.

STEP 5.

Remove four screws from the left and right hinge mounting brackets (two screws from each side).

In the following guide I’ll be taking apart a Gateway P-series laptop.

In my case I’m taking apart a Gateway P-6825 but the guide should work for the entire P-series line.

If it fits any other Gateway model, please mention the model number in comments after this post.

First of all, turn it off, disconnect AC adapter and remove battery.

Many major internal components can be accessed if you remove two covers from the bottom.

There are five screws securing the fan/RAM cover and four screws securing the hard drive cover.

Under the fan/RAM cover you’ll find both memory (RAM) modules, wireless card, cooling fan and processor (mounted under the heat sink).

Removing this cover will not allow you to replace the cooling fan, but you’ll be able to clean it. I suggest using compressed air for cleaning the cooling fan and heat sink.

Also, removing this cover gives you access to both memory modules and makes it very easy to replace/upgrade memory.

Under the hard drive cover you’ll find two hard drive bays.

In my case I had only one hard drive installed.

In order to remove the hard drive, slide the entire hard drive assembly in the direction shown by the yellow arrow.

In my case I had to use some force because the hard drive was fitted very tightly.

When the hard drive assembly removed, you can remove four screws securing the hard drive to the caddy.

After that separate the hard drive from the caddy. Now you can replace the hard drive with a new one.

Using a sharp object remove the rubber cover located on the right side of the hard drive bay.

This cover hides a screw securing the DVD drive. Remove the screw.

Now you can slide the DVD drive to the right and remove it.

The DVD drive has been removed.

In the following 10 steps I explain how to remove the keyboard.

It’s not necessary to follow all previous steps in order to remove the keyboard.

Remove two screws securing the power button cover in the battery bay.

Carefully lift up the right side of the power button cover.

Continue removing the power button cover.

Be very careful. There are two cables connecting power/media boards to the motherboard. Do not lift up the cover too high.

On the following picture you can see two cables.

Try not to disconnect them from the motherboard or power/media board.

Ideally, these cables remain connected after you remove the cover.

Remove five screws securing the keyboard above the function keys.

Lift up the top side of the keyboard and move it towards the display.

Now you can access the cable connector.

Before you remove the cable, you have to unlock the connector.

Flip the right side of the brown clip up so it opens at a 90 degree angle.

After the connector is unlocked, you can release the cable.

Finally, remove the keyboard and replace it with a new one if needed.

In this guide I explain how to disassemble a Gateway MX (Model #MA2A) series laptop. To be precise, I’m taking apart a Gateway MX6650 model.

The main purpose of this repair is replacing the base cover.

In my case a piece of the base assembly where the right hinge connected broke off.

Let’s go through the disassembly process step by step. Before you start, turn off the computer, disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery.

STEP 1.

Remove two screws (yellow) securing the hard drive assembly.
Remove one screw (red) securing the wireless card cover.
Remove seven screws (green) securing the memory cover.

There is one screw on the bottom (pink) securing the keyboard. You can remove this screw now or in the step 8.

STEP 6.

Now you can access the cable connector.

You’ll have to unlock the connector before removing the cable.

In this guide I will remove a broken LCD screen from a Gateway MT6704 (Model MA7) laptop and replace it with a new one.

As I mentioned in my previous article, where I was replacing the keyboard, this guide will work for many other Gateway MT6700 models.

Before you start, turn off the computer, unplug the power adapter and remove the battery.

You’ll find six rubber screw seals on the display bezel.

Remove all seals with a sharp object (picture above) and also remove all six screws found under the seals.

Start separating the bezel from the display cover with your fingers. A piece of soft plastic (I’m using a guitar pick) will help you to separate two parts without breaking them.

Continue removing the bezel on the top of the display assembly.

The bezel has been removed.

As you see on the picture below, a part of the inverter is covered by the LCD support bracket.

This bracket has to be removed first.

Remove two screws securing the support bracket and after that remove it.

Now you can access the inverter board which is glued to the display cover. Remove it with a caution.

I will not be removing the inverter in this guide, it’s not necessary for replacing the screen. But I have to unplug one cable on the right side of the board.

This cable goes to the backlight lamp inside the screen.

Carefully separate the LCD panel from the cover and place it the front side down on the keyboard.

Now you can access the video cable on the back.

The video cable connector is secured by clear tape.

Remove the tape and unplug the video cable.

Now you can remove the screen. As you see, the mounting brackets are still attached to both sides.

Remove two screws securing the mounting bracket.

Remove one more bracket from the other side.

I found a sticker on the back side of the screen. Apparently, the number above the barcode is the part number used by Gateway.

I was able to find a new replacement screen using this part number.

The broken LCD has been removed and I’m ready to install a new one.

For complete laptop disassembly instructions please take a look at this guide. It’s a different Gateway model but the body is very similar.
