In this guide I will take apart a Sony VAIO E Series laptop.

Product name: SVE14A35CXH
MODEL: SVE14AJ16L

Make sure the laptop is turned off before you start taking it apart.

STEP 1.

Unlock and remove and replace the battery if necessary.

STEP 2.

Remove one screw securing the RAM cover.

Lift up the cover and remove it.

Under the cover you can access both RAM modules.

Sony VAIO E series supports up to 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-12800 SODIMM RAM modules.

STEP 3.

Remove the hard drive cover.

Remove two screws securing the hard drive assembly.

Slide the hard drive to the left to disconnect it from the motherboard.

STEP 4.

Lift up and remove the hard drive.

I recommend replacing this regular 2.5″ SATA hard drive to a 2.5″ SATA solid state drive. Doing so will improve the laptop performance significantly.

STEP 5.

Remove one screw securing the optical drive.

Slide the optical drive to the left and pull it out.

STEP 6.

Remove all screws from the bottom cover.

Two hinge screws (green) are larger than other screws.

Two screws located in the battery compartment (yellow) are smaller.

STEP 7.

Start separating the bottom cover from the rest of the laptop.

You can use a guitar pick to split the case.

STEP 8.

Remove the bottom cover.

Under the cover you can easily access the following internal components:

– Power button board.
– DC power connector.
– Cooling fan assembly.
– Wi-Fi card.
– USB/Audio board.

STEP 9.

The microphone, headphone and two USB ports located on a separate board.

If one of the audio jack or USB ports is damaged, simply replace the entire board.

STEP 10.

In order to remove the cooling fan assembly you’ll have to remove a few screws securing the heat sink and unplug the fan cable.

STEP 11.

The DC power connector is NOT soldered to the motherboard. It can be easily replaced after you unplug the cable.

The DC connector secured to the case by a metal bracket. In order to remove the bracket you’ll have to remove the fan assembly first.

STEP 12.

There are a few latches securing the keyboard to the case.

In order to remove the keyboard you’ll have to unlock these latches.

STEP 13.

Push on a latch until it disengages from the case.

STEP 14.

When the latch is disengaged, the keyboard will lift up a little bit.

Continue separating the keyboard from the case with your fingers and at the same time unlock remaining latches on the other side.

STEP 15.

Separate the keyboard from the case and place it upside down on the palm rest.

STEP 16.

There are two cables connecting the keyboard to the motherboard.

– The backlight cable (narrow).
– The data cable (wide).

STEP 17.

The backlight cable connector doesn’t have a locking mechanism.

Simply pull the cable from the connector.

STEP 18.

The data cable connector, on the other hand, has to be unlocked first.

Carefully slide the locking tab about 2 millimeters away from the connector.

The tab must remain attached to the connector.

STEP 19.

Now you can pull the data cable from the connector (it goes under the locking tab).

STEP 20.

Remove the keyboard completely.

STEP 21.

The power button board cable can be accessed when the keyboard removed.

The board itself secured to the other side by one screw.

STEP 22.

Here’s how to remove the cable.

First, lift up one side of the locking tab until it opens up at a 90 degree angle (yellow arrow).

Second, pull the cable from the connector.

Now you can easily remove the power button board if necessary.

In this guide I explain how to disassemble a Sony Vaio VPCSA laptop.

In my case the full computer product name is: VPCSA4MFY. Model PCG-4121GL.

Don’t forget to turn it off before taking apart.

STEP 1.

Remove two screws securing the service cover on the bottom

Slide the cover away from the laptop case and remove it.

STEP 2.

Push on the blue latch to unlock the battery.

STEP 3.

Lift up the left side of the battery and pull it out.

STEP 4.

Spread latches on both sides of the RAM slot just enough to release the module.

Pull the memory module out by the edges.

In a Sony Vaio VPCSA laptop you will find only one RAM slot.

The second RAM module is integrated into the motherboard and cannot be removed.

You can install up to 4GB DDR3-12800 SODIMM RAM module into this slot.

STEP 5.

Remove four screws securing the hard drive mounting bracket.

Carefully slide the cable retainer about 2 millimeters to the shown direction to unlock the connector.

STEP 14.

Disconnect the cable.

Both cables have to be disconnected.

STEP 15.

Start removing the top cover keyboard assembly as it shown on the following picture.

STEP 16.

When the palmrest assembly removed you can get access to the following internal components:
– Cooling fan.
– Wireless card.
– DVD drive.
– Hard drive.

In my Sony Vaio VPCZ1290X I had two SSDs (Solid State Drives) sandwiched together and configured as RAID 0.

In this guide I will take apart a Sony Vaio VGN-CS215J laptop in order to replace failed DC jack. I think this guide will work for all other models in the Sony Vaio VGN-CS line.

During this disassembly process I’ll go though the following major steps:
STEP 1-5: Removing the hard drive, DVD drive. Accessing both memory modules.
STEP 6-12: Disconnecting and removing the keyboard.
STEP 13-16: Removing the bottom cover.
STEP 17-18: Disconnecting and removing the cooling fan assembly.
STEP 19-29: Disconnecting, removing and replacing the DC jack harness.

It’s hard to replace the DC jack on this model. If you have never fixed a laptop before, you don’t want to start with Sony Vaio VGN-CS. I think Sony engineers tried their best to make the DC jack cable replacement as difficult as possible. Well… they succeeded.

STEP 1.

Turn off the computer. Unlock and remove the battery.

STEP 2.

Loosen/remove screws securing the hard drive and memory covers on the bottom.

Lift up and remove both covers.

STEP 3.

Remove one screw securing the hard drive caddy to the case.

STEP 4.

Slide the hard drive assembly to the left to disconnect it from the motherboard.

Lift up and remove the hard drive.

Sony Vaio VGN-CS215J I has a regular 2.5″ SATA hard drive installed.

Both memory slots/modules accessible on the bottom.

It’s not necessary to remove memory modules for the purpose of my repair so I’ll leave them connected to the motherboard.

STEP 5.

Remove one screw securing the DVD drive.

Pull the DVD drive to the left and remove it.

STEP 6.

Remove four screw securing the keyboard on the bottom.

Make notes where these screws are located. It’ll make your life way easier during the reassembly process.

STEP 7.

Insert a piece of soft plastic under the top side of the keyboard and lift it up.

Continue removing the keyboard with your fingers.

STEP 8.

Lift up the keyboard and turn it upside down on the palmrest. Be careful. The keyboard still connected to the motherboard.

STEP 9.

Now you can access the keyboard cable connector.

In the following two steps I explain how to unlock the connector and remove the cable.

STEP 10.

The keyboard connector has a locking tab.

Slide the locking tab about 1-2 millimeters to the shown direction. The tab must remain attached to the white connector base.

STEP 11.

On this picture the connector shown in the unlocked position.

Now you can pull cable from the connector.

STEP 12.

Lift up and remove the keyboard.

When the keyboard is removed you can access the wireless card and modem.

STEP 13.

Turn the laptop upside down and remove all screws located on the bottom.

Again, keep track of all screws locations. All screws are different. You can put the on a piece of paper in order removed.

STEP 14.

Unplug one cable located in the memory compartment.

STEP 15.

Now you can start lifting up and removing the bottom cover.

STEP 16.

Remove the bottom cover.

The bottom cover has been removed.

The DC jack located in the upper right corner and the cable routed under the heatsink.

STEP 17.

Remove four screw securing the cooling fan assembly (fan and heatsink).

Disconnect fan cable from the motherboard.

STEP 18.

Lift up and remove the cooling fan assembly. Probably it needs some cleaning.

STEP 19.

Here’s one more surprise. The DC jack cable routed UNDER the metal frame.

In order to replace the DC jack properly it’s necessary to disassemble the whole thing apart.

I’ll replace the DC jack without taking the hole thing apart. It’s not the proper way but I’ll try it anyway.

WARNING! You can damage the laptop doing this. If you are not sure. Stop right here. I’m not responsible for any damage you can cause to the computer.

STEP 20.

Remove five screws securing the battery board.

Lift up the battery board to disconnect it from the motherboard (there is a connector underneath).

STEP 21.

Disconnect the DC jack cable from the battery board.

STEP 22.

The DC jack cable routed under the plastic part.

Push the DC jack cable though the hole  and pull on the other side at the same time.

STEP 23.

Pull the DC jack cable thought the opening again and release the cable as it shown on the following picture.

STEP 24.

The DC jack cable running under the video cable.

Unplug the video cable from the motherboard and put it aside.

STEP 25.

Now continue unrouting the DC jack cable.

STEP 26.

Here comes the most difficult part.

Remove all screws shown on the following picture. Again, keep track of screws.

Be careful with the display because it will be loose.

STEP 27.

Insect a plastic stick between the top cover and metal frame and spread them wide enough to remove the DC jack.

One more surprise was waiting for me. The DC jack was glued to the metal frame.

I had to use a screwdriver in order to separate the cable from the frame.

STEP 28.

Finally pull the failed DC jack harness from the laptop.

STEP 29.

Now insert the new DC jack harness back in place. It’s not easy but definitely possible.

On the following picture I have a new DC jack installed.

Before crewing all together, make sure all cables are routed correctly.

I would suggest you taking close up pictures during the disassembly process. This will help you to route cable correctly.

In this guide I will show how to disassemble a Sony Vaio VPCS111FM in order to fix broken power button.

Also, this laptop has another model number on the bottom: Model PCG-51211L.

Here’s what happened. The power button got pushed into the case and stopped working. It wasn’t possible to turn on the laptop at all.

In order to figure out what’s going on I had to disassemble the case and take a closer look at the power button.

By the way, here’s my previous post explaining how to replace LCD screen on Sony Vaio VPCS111FM.

STEP 1.

Make sure the computer is turned off. Remove the battery.

STEP 2.

Remove four screws securing the hard drive and memory cover.

It’s not necessary to remove the memory cover for the purpose of this guide.

I’m doing it just to show where you can find both RAM (memory) modules

STEP 7.

Remove all screws from the bottom.

NOTE: my Sony Vaio VPSS111FM had both hinge covers missing. I don’t think you’ll have a problem removing them.

STEP 8.

Remove the express card cover.

Don’t forget to remove one screw located under the cover.

STEP 9.

Now you should be able to lift up the bottom cover and remove it from the rest of the laptop.

STEP 10.

The bottom cover removed.

STEP 11.

Under the top cover you’ll get access to the cooling fan assembly (fan and heatsink).

If the cooling fan looks dirty, blow the dust off the fan and heatsink.

STEP 13.

Disconnect the power button board cable from the express card board.

STEP 14.

Carefully lift up the right side of the express card board to disconnect it from the motherboard.

STEP 15.

The express card board still connected to the display assembly by two wires (wireless card antenna cables).

It’s not necessary to disconnect them. Just put the board aside.

The wireless card attached to the bottom side of the express card board.

STEP 16.

Remove one screw securing the power button cover.

Lift up and remove the cover.

Now you can see why the power button got pushed in.

The power button board mounted on the metal frame which is part of the top cover assembly.

A part of the metal frame where the power button board attached broke off.

STEP 17.

Remove the broken metal frame with the power button.

STEP 18.

Remove one screw securing the power button board to the frame and remove the board.

Now I’m going to glue the broken metal piece back to the main chassis.

I’ll be using JB weld Cold Weld compound to attach two metal parts.

I glued broken parts and let it cure overnight.

The next day I assemble the laptop and voila! The Sony Vaio VPCS111FM power button fixed!

STEP 4.

Start separating the bezel from the display cover with your fingers.

Carefully wiggle the bezel to disengage hidden plastic latches.

STEP 5.

Continue removing the bezel.

STEP 6.

The bezel has been removed.

STEP 7.

Remove four screws securing the LCD.

STEP 8.

Disconnect cable from the webcam module.

STEP 9.

Separate LCD from the display cover and place it on the keyboard.

STEP 12.

Remove damaged LCD screen.

Now you are ready to replace it with a new one.

NOTE:Â Make sure it’s designed for or compatible with Sony laptops.

I believe that not all screens will work with Sony laptops even if the screen model number matches.

You’ll have to find a new LCD which is COMPATIBLE with Sony. I would suggest you contact the seller and confirm that.

In my Sony Vaio VPC-S111FM the LCD had the following part number (model): CLAA133WA01A.

UPDATE: in the next guide I explain how to disassemble the base and repair broken power button.

In this guide I explain how to disassemble a Sony Vaio VGN-NR series laptop.

I’ll be taking apart a Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E model but I believe you can use same instructions for all other models in VGN-NR line.

The main goal of my repair is removing and replacing the failed hard drive which is mounted inside the case.

While accessing the hard drive, I’ll explain how to remove some other main components.

Before you start, make sure the laptop is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

Both memory modules can be accessed on the bottom.

Remove one screw securing the service cover. Remove the cover.

STEP 2.

Release both memory modules and pull them from slots.

STEP 3.

Remove three screws securing the DVD drive.

Pull DVD drive to the right and remove it.

STEP 4.

Remove one screw securing the keyboard.

STEP 5.

There are four spring loaded latches securing the keyboard to the top cover.

I pointed to latch locations with four arrows.

STEP 6.

In order to remove the keyboard you’ll have to release all four latches.

Push on the latch with a sharp object. The keyboard will lift up a little bit and will not allow the latch to lock again.

Release all four latches.

STEP 7.

Now you should be able to lift up the keyboard and turn it over on the palm rest.

Be careful, the keyboard still attached to the motherboard.

STEP 8.

When the keyboard turned over, you can access the cable connector.

Before you remove the keyboard, the cable connector has to be unlocked and cable released.

STEP 9.

On the following picture the cable connector shown in the locked position.

In order to unlock the connector you’ll have to move the brown part about 2 millimeters to the direction shown by two arrows. The brown tab must stat attached to the white base. Do not move it too far. Do not separate it from the connector base.

STEP 10.

On the following picture the connector is shown in the unlocked position. As you see, the brown tab still attached to the base but the cable is released now.

Pull the cable from the connector.

STEP 11.

Now you can remove the keyboard.

STEP 12.

Remove all screws from the bottom. These screws securing the bottom cover to the top cover.

STEP 13.

Lift up and remove the bottom cover.

STEP 14.

When the bottom cover removed you can access the cooling fan, wireless card, processor and hard drive.

As I mentioned before, my goal is replacing the hard drive.

NOTE: In order to remove the cooling fan, you’ll have to remove the heat sink. Shouldn’t be very difficult.

STEP 15.

Remove one screw securing the USB board. Lift up the USB board and put it aside.

STEP 16.

Remove one screw securing the hard drive assembly.

Slide the hard drive assembly to the right to disconnect it from the motherboard.

STEP 17.

Lift up the hard drive assembly.

Now separate the failed hard drive from the mounting bracket and replace it with a new drive.

This is a regular 2.5″ SATA hard drive.

Any large 2.5″ SATA hard drive should work fine in this laptop.

In this guide I show how to disassemble a Sony Vaio VGN-FW170J laptop.

Most likely this guide will work for the entire Sony Vaio VGN-FW line.

Before you start, make sure the computer is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

I start the disassembly process with removing two service covers from the bottom.

STEP 2.

Remove three screws securing the hard drive caddy to the base.

Slide the hard drive to the left and disconnect it from the motherboard.

STEP 3.

Lift up and remove the hard drive.

This laptop uses a regular 2.5″ SATA HDD.

STEP 4.

Both memory modules can be accessed on the bottom.

In order to remove the memory module you’ll have to spread latches located on both sides of the memory slot.

The memory module will pop up at a 30 degree angle. After that you can pull the memory module from the slot.

Sony Vaio VGN-FW170J can handle up to 4GB RAM max.

You can install up to 2GB RAM module into one slot. Use DDR2 PC2-640 memory modules.

STEP 5.

Remove two screws securing the DVD drive.

Pull the DVD drive to the left and remove it.

STEP 6.

I remove all screws because I’m going to remove the top cover assembly.

If you only removing/replacing the keyboard, you should remove four (green) screws securing the speaker cover and one (yellow) screw securing the keyboard.

STEP 10.

On the following picture the connector is shown in the locked position.

In order to unlock the connector, move the brown locking tab about 2 millimeters towards the LCD screen.

WARNING! The brown locking tab must remain attached to the connector base.

Lift up and remove the display assembly.

STEP 19.

Separate the bottom cover from the top cover.

In this Sony model the motherboard is mounted to the top cover.

STEP 20.

Continue removing the bottom cover.

STEP 21.

The bottom cover removed.

NOTE: You can skip steps 7-19 if you only want to remove the bottom cover.

Warning: When installing the bottom cover back on the laptop pay attention to the wireless switch on the motherboard. The wireless switch located on the motherboard and it’s very small and weak. Make sure the wireless switch positioned correctly. The knob on the switch (located on the motherboard) has to match opening on the ON/OFF slider (located on the bottom cover) and fit into it. If the knob on the wireless switch positioned incorrectly, you can break it while installing the bottom cover back in place.

On the following picture it’s hard to see ON/OFF slider but it’s located on the right side of the case.

STEP 22.

When the bottom cover removed, you can access the cooling fan, CMOS battery and DC jack.

Also, you can access the processor (CPU) after you remove the heat sink.

STEP 23.

Remove three screws securing the cooling fan.

Disconnect fan cable from the motherboard.

NOTE: In my case a piece of metal frame (where DC jack mounted) broke off of the main frame. That’s why the DC jack looks dislocated.

STEP 24.

Lift up and remove the cooling fan.

In this guide I show how to remove and replace LCD screen on a Sony Vaio VGN-NW series laptop.

I’m fixing a Sony Vaio VGN-NW235F model. It also says model PCG-7184L on the bottom.

Before you start, make sure the computer is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

There are four white screw covers on the display bezel.

Remove all four covers. Remove four screws located under those covers.

The screw cover has a sticky bottom. You can remove it with a sharp object.

STEP 2.

Start separating the bezel from the display cover.

You can use a guitar pick or old credit card to separate the bezel. Continue removing it with your fingers.

STEP 3.

After you separated the bezel on the top of the display assembly, move to the bottom side.

Remove the bezel from the laptop.

STEP 4.

Sony Vaio VGN-NW235F has a regular CCFL backlight LCD screen with inverter board.

The inverter board mounted on the bottom side of the display assembly.

Carefully separate inverter board from the display cover and disconnect cables on both ends.

Remove the inverter board.

STEP 5.

Remove four screws securing display hinges.

STEP 6.

Separate the LCD from the display cover and place it face down on the keyboard.

STEP 7.

Now you can access the display cable.

STEP 8.

Disconnect the cable from the connector.

STEP 9.

Now you can remove the LCD screen assembly from the laptop.

By the way, the web camera is not a part of the screen. It’s a separate module mounted on the top of the display cover.

STEP 10.

When you replace the screen, you’ll have to remove both mounting brackets and transfer them to the new one.

In order to remove the bracket, simply remove four screws.

You can search for a new replacement screen using the model number from the original part.

My Sony Vaio VGN-NW235F had the following 15.6″ LCD installed: B156XW01.
