Taking apart HP Pavilion x360 14m-dh1003dx laptop.

In this disassembly guide I take apart an HP Pavilion x360 14m-dh1003dx laptop. It’s very likely this guide will work for some other models in the HP Pavilion x360 14m computer line: 14m-dh0001dx, 14m-dh0003dx, 14m-dh1001dx and some others.

At the time of writing this article (November 27, 2019), this is the latest version of HP Pavilion x360 m series. It’s equipped with a 10th generation Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor.

Some of the HP Pavilion x360 14m-dh1003dx design features that make this model easily upgradable:
– The motherboard has two memory slots.
– The laptop comes with a 256GB NVMe M.2 SSD but has a bay where you can install an additional 2.5″ hard drive.

For this disassembly you will need the following set of tools: tweezers, Phillips screwdriver #0, thin metal case opener tool.

STEP 1.
Remove four screws securing the bottom cover.
Two screws are hidden under the rear right and left bottom feet.

Remove four screws securing the bottom cover.

In order to access the hidden screw you’ll have to peel off one side of the foot.

STEP 2.
Using a case opener tool pry up the bottom cover.

STEP 3.
Continue removing the bottom cover with your hands. You’ll have to apply some reasonable force to unsnap the cover from the hidden latches.

Continue removing the bottom cover with your hands.

STEP 4.
Remove the bottom cover completely.

Remove the bottom cover completely.

STEP 5.
Remove five screws securing the battery.

STEP 6.
Lift up the battery to disconnect it from the motherboard.

Lift up the battery to disconnect it from the motherboard.

STEP 7.
Remove the battery. I would strongly recommend disconnecting the battery before working with the internal laptop components.

HP Pavilion x360 14m-dh1003dx battery model: HT03XL.
HP part number L11421-423.
HP spare part number: L11119-855.

Remove the battery.

This laptop has a 2.5″ hard drive placeholder. You can upgrade the laptop storage by installing an additional 2.5″ solid state drive. For this upgrade you will need to find the hard drive mounting bracket and SATA cable.

STEP 8.
There is a small latch securing the hard drive placeholder on the left side. Release the latch and remove the placeholder.

Release the latch and remove the placeholder.

Under the hard drive place holder you can access the finger scanner.

STEP 9.
There is an adhesive aluminum shielding covering the PCIe NVMe solid state drive.
Peel off the the shielding from the M.2 slot on the motherboard.
Remove one screw securing the solid state drive and pull it out.

Remove the PCIe NVMe solid state drive.

Here’s the other side of the drive, it’s an Intel PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD.

STEP 11.
Lift up the RAM cover.

Lift up the RAM cover.

Now you can access both memory slots. This particular HP Pavilion x360 14m-dh1003dx laptop was configured with only one 8GB memory module. I would definitely upgrade the memory to at least 16GB. According to Crucial this model supports up to 64GB (2x32GB) DDR4-2666 SODIMM.

Two memory slots available for RAM upgrade.

STEP 12.
The power button is located on a separate board and can be easily removed.
Remove one screw securing the power button board and disconnect the cable.

Here’s how to disconnect the power button cable.
Lift up the locking tab located on the connector (red arrow) and pull the cable out (yellow arrow).

STEP 13.
Remove the power button.

Remove the power button.

The DC power jack is mounted under the right display hinge.

STEP 14.
Open the display 180 degrees and remove two screws securing the display hinge to the top case assembly.

STEP 15.
Lift up the display assembly just enough to access the DC power jack.
Disconnect the DC jack cable from the motherboard and remove it.

Disconnect the DC jack cable from the motherboard and remove it.

I’m not going to remove the display in this guide but it’s not difficult.
In order to remove the display assembly you’ll have to remove five screws securing the hinges and disconnect the webcam cable (orange), the wireless card antenna cables (yellow) and the display cable (green). After that you should be able to separate the display from the top case assembly.

In order to remove the display you'll have to remove five screws securing the hinges and disconnect all shown cables.

The touchpad also can be easily removed and replaced if necessary.
There are seven screws securing the touchpad to the top case assembly.

My laptop 14m-dh0001dx whole keyboard and notepad are not responding so as you see I just replaced the screen and everything went ok. Even the note pad keyboard everything… what could have happened for next day not to be working? Especially when nothing related to the keyboard was touched?

    • IML Tech

Yeah, it is strange. Someone spilled something on the keyboard without telling you?
Did you remove the battery? Maybe you accidentally pulled the keyboard/trackpad cables out while removing the battery? Check both connections just in case.
Also, try reconnecting the main battery. Sometimes it fixes weird stuff.

Hi, where can I find the bracket and sata cable for the installation of the hard drive compatible with the model of this laptop?

PS: Sorry my English is bad, I’m from Peru but I could buy it from Amazon-USA. Thank you

    • IML Tech

Miller, I tried to find a service manual for this particular model but apparently it’s not available yet. I found a very similar model though. You can get the service manual here:

      http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06140017

The 2.5″ hard drive shown on the page 41 and looks like it’s identical to HP Pavilion x360 14m-dh1003dx (same location, same connection).

For mounting the 2.5″ SATA hard drive you need a rubber sleeve. Part number: L18225-001. I think the rubber sleeve is optional. You can just tape the drive inside the laptop with adhesive tape.

For connecting this drive to the motherboard you need a SATA cable. Part number: L18218-001

Google both part numbers and you’ll find them. I’m not sure 100% they will fit but they look very close to what you need.

Where is the bluetooth module? I’m having issues with garbled sound and would like to take a look at the BT module when I upgrade the RAM.

    • IML Tech

Mike, the bluetooth module integrated into the wireless card.

I haven’t done it on this model yet but it looks like the fan is attached to the heatsink so they have to be removed together.
There are four screws attaching the heatsink to the motherboard and two/three screws attaching the fan to the case.
Remove all the screws, disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard and remove the heatsink/fan assembly.

what “key” is the m.2 nvme ssd? is it a “b”, “m”, or a “b and m” key??

    • IML Tech

I don’t know. Never paid attention to letters. 🙂
M.2 SATA SSD usually has 2 keys.
M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD usually has 1 key.
I buy NVMe SSDs here: https://amzn.to/39SEshg
      Prefer Samsung.

is the internals of DH1046TX(i7-10510U, MX250) same internals as this?

    • IML Tech

Not sure about that. Trying to find a service manual 14-dh1046tx but so far unsuccessful. Maybe it’s just too new.

Thank you for the detailed guide! I have the exact same model and my wife spilled water on the keyboard a month ago. I have dried it out completely but the keyboard still does not work properly. I want to order one on ebay to replace it but I was wondering if you had the exact part # for it? Is it 14m-dh0001dx? I went to the link mentioned in Step 15 of the article but there are many different part #’s available. I haven’t taken mine apart yet, I would like to wait until I get the replacement part in if possible. Thanks!

I wasn’t given the option to buy a 512gb ssd when I purchased my machine (pavilion x360 14t-dh100CTO). I wonder if anyone has replaced the 16gb/256gb optane/ssd combo with the 32gb/512gb one? I’m about to buy one and see if it works. Part No. L77996-001

I think I have a Samsung 970 EVO 500GB laying around I could install as well too.
