Hi, my HP dv6000 crashed yesterday with a frozen screen as I was left-clicking and dragging the cursor to expand a window. I powered the laptop down by holding the power button for 5 seconds, but after that the dv6000 had a black screen and it would not re-boot until I had removed the first RAM chip. Now works fine, as long as I don't put any RAM into the first socket. I tried replacing with known working RAM but it won't boot at all unless that first RAM socket is left empty. I read someone else had this same issue further up the page here, but there was no response. Is this now a hardware issue, e.g. faulty motherboard, or something which could be addressed by flashing the firmware? I had 2 x 2gb RAM (though system recognises only 3gb of that), now just 1x 2gb strip working in socket #2. I replaced the original 2 x 1gb RAM strips but as I say the dv6000 wont boot unless socket #1 is empty. Running a lot cooler now that I air blasted the fan area.

Hi
Great guide, I have an HP dv 6700 entertainment model laptop. Initially it kep shutting down on high temperature, CPU reporting 90oC Plus....I theottled the CPU to 60% in the power ( advanced options) and now the CPU runs at around 55-60oC and the GPU at 50oC........I don't use the laptop for anything demanding, just Internet browsing office etc....it works well like this.
The only time the temperature is n issue, is if I boot from a CD or DVD e.g. Acronis true image, where it seems the power option settings do not apply, and sometimes it shuts down on high temperature ( I assume) before the backup is complete.....so most of the time it works well..
I am familiar with building / troubleshooting PC's, but never worked on a Laptop before, think it may be a good idea to strip it down; as per your guide and reseat the CPU and GPU with new thermal paste....MX4 seems to be a front runner....have done this on a PC, so am familiar with the procedure.....the other, quicker option is to blow through the casing slits /slots with a compressed air can and try to clean up the heat sink etc this way......maybe this will be enough ! Do you think reseatingthe CPU and GPU with some good thermal paste is worth doing ? And will give some good results, or should I just go for the air in a can first and see what happens.....just don't want to waste money on can of air if not beneficial or a strip down is considered the best way to go.

Thanks

My HP dv6000 has started to shut down within a few seconds of turning it on. I "half disassembled" it to where I could blow out the fan, thinking that that was the problem. It seem to be not. What I notice is that when I turn the system on, the fan spins for a few second then everything shuts down.
Can you say what seems to be the problem?

@ Precious,

Here's what you should try first.
1. Unplug the AC adapter.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Push on the power button for a few seconds.
Wait for 30 seconds, plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on again.

If this doesn't help, probably this is motherboard related failure. HP Pavilion dv6000 laptops have knowns issue with the graphics card failure.

@ swilly,

Question like removing hard drives and using them as external removeable drives with the aid of an adapter cable.

Yes, you can do that. You can use these drives as external drives in USB enclosure OR install them into a desktop. No special configuration needs. They use same SATA cables. You might need a 3.5" mounting bracket to install laptop HDDs into a desktop but that's about it.

Can this be done with the slimed down dvd-rw CD reader writer Modle TS-L632 ?

Yes, you can use this drive as an external DVD drive. You'll have to buy a special enclosure. Probably available on eBay.
I don't think you'll be able to boot from this drive, most likely your PC or laptop will not recognize it but you can use it as an external drive.

Hi I have a dv2000 with black screen of death, upon opening found that the two large chips under keyboard had what appears to be a small amount of blu tac, not sure if this is actually some sort of heat conducting compound or someone else's quick fix (is a second hand machine) Are these the video chip and another? other labeled intel, think is actually the main processor .
Found info on chips as follows.
1st chip has large i and following

LE82PM965
SLA5U
E751A651
M (in a cirle) C (in a circle) 06

2nd chip clearly marked intel and has following code

NH82801HBM
L748LA17
SLA5Q
M (in a circle) C (in a circle) 05

any thoughts on this appreciated
