How to replace screen on Lenovo ThinkPad T410

posted in: 6. IBM & Lenovo | 7

In this guide I will show how to replace broken screen on a Lenovo ThinkPad T410 laptop.

Most likely this guide will work for some other ThinkPad models.

Lenovo ThinkPad T410 comes with a LED-backlit LCD. I explain how to find a new replacement screen at the end of the guide.

Before you start, make sure the computer turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

Remove screw cover from the lower left corner of the display bezel.

Remove both screws located under the cover.

STEP 2.

Do the same with the lower right corner.

STEP 3.

Start separating the bezel from the back cover.

Insert a piece of soft plastic between the bezel and cover and wiggle it a little bit.

At the same time insert your fingers under the bezel and wiggle it to unlock many hidden plastic latches.

STEP 4.

Continue separating the bezel on the top of the display cover.

After that move to the lower part.

STEP 5.

The bezel has been removed.

STEP 6.

Remove two screw securing the mounting brackets to the back cover.

STEP 7.

Separate screen from the cover and place it face down on the palm rest assembly.

STEP 8.

Now you can access the back side and disconnect the video cable.

Remove sticky tape securing the video cable.

STEP 9.

Unplug the video cable connector.

STEP 10.

Now you can remove the LCD.

STEP 11.

Finally, remove two screws from mounting bracket on the side.

Transfer the hinge bracket to the new screen.

Do the same with the other side.

It’s very important to find the correct LCD for your laptop. Make sure it has the same resolution as the original one.

There are two ways:
1. You can search by the LCD model number. In my case the model number is: B141EW05 v.4
2. You can search by the Lenovo FRU number. In my case FRU number is 42T0733.

It’s possible there is more than one screen compatible with your Lenovo ThinkPad T410 laptop.

UPDATE: In the next guide I explain how to replace the cooling fan.

Your instructions are the best. I have not actually done any repair yet but I am about to try to replace the graphics chip or entire motherboard of a friend’s old Thinkpad (Type 2379). I have not been able to locate a manual. Is this a part I can buy (the motherboard) and replace at an electronics store? The screen shows garbled pixellations upon opening the laptop and starting. Immediately it goes to this garbled rolling jumble of colors and nothing else happens. I really want to try to do this myself. Geek Squad apparently quoted $150 plus parts.
If you would kindly email me if I can access the motherboard without removong the whole screen (flip-open monitor screen) I’d be very grateful. Also what is the way to compensate you for this help? I have an amazon pay account and a paypal account.
    Thanks for your time.
Unfortunately I can’tse a phone at work and I am in AZ (Mountain time). So email is best. Thanks again.

      Jeremie Frank,

I have not actually done any repair yet but I am about to try to replace the graphics chip or entire motherboard of a friend’s old Thinkpad (Type 2379). I have not been able to locate a manual. Is this a part I can buy (the motherboard) and replace at an electronics store?

Most likely the graphics card integrated into the motherboard and cannot be replaced separately.
You cannot buy new motherboard in a local electronics store but probably you can find it online. You have to be aware that replacement IBM/Lenovo motherboards are very expensive. I don’t think the laptop worth fixing if it has failed motherboard.
Here’s the official service manual for ThinkPadT40/T40p,T41/T41p,T42/T42p.

The screen shows garbled pixellations upon opening the laptop and starting. Immediately it goes to this garbled rolling jumble of colors and nothing else happens.

First of all, test the laptop with an external monitor. If external image is good and the problem appears only on the laptop screen, most likely this is not a problem with the graphics card. This could be either failing LCD screen or bad video cable.

I really want to try to do this myself. Geek Squad apparently quoted $150 plus parts.

This cannot be a quote for the motherboard replacement. For a new motherboard they would quote something like $400-500 or just tell your friend to buy a new laptop.

If you would kindly email me if I can access the motherboard without removong the whole screen (flip-open monitor screen) I’d be very grateful.

You’ll find disassembly instructions in the service manual.

Hey, I bought a replacement screen recently for my T410 but got the 1400×900 instead of the 1280×800 my original screen had. When I connected it, the screen appeared fine first, although much dimmer than usual. However, it started flickering and the brightness eventually died leaving a faint image of the desktop. The computer was still on and working but the screen was so dark, you couldn’t see what’s going on. I’ve done some research and I think it may be the inverter rather than the screen. Any tips?

Just successfully replaced my T410 LCD using your instructions, they are great. Only suggestion would be to make it clear that the video cable pulls out in the same plane as the panel, the plug is so small I wasn’t sure if it went in perpendicular or parallel, had to find a youtube video to clarify.

    Thanks for posting these instructions!
