I'm not familiar with this model but most likely there are some screws under the keyboard. You have to remove all screws under the keyboard. Only after that you can remove the cover and access the hard drive.
Here's the laptop diagram: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/161187/Sony-Vaio-Pcg-Z1v.html?page=8#manual

I have 2 Sony PCG K315both around 5years old and they have both started to shut down randomly. Sometimes when I switch on the the fan starts and then I hear the disc start and then the disc stops but the fan keeps going. Usually the laptop starts OK and then shuts down after a few minutes and very occaisionally will stay on for a few hous before shutting down-when this happens the fan stops and the power light goes out. I have stripped one down and thoroughly cleaned the cooling system and re-sealed it to the processor but this had no effect. I guess that this might be a component that has become unstable, probably a a capacitor as it has affected both laptops at about the same age. Has anybody else experienced a similar problem ? Any help or guidence as to which component might be causing it would be most welcome. Also can anyone refer me to a web site where I can get a circuit diagram-not just a schematic - for a similar motherboard?

Update: 5 minutes later. After finishing my earlier post I took a closer look at the laptop screws and solved my problem: One of the case screws attaches to the DVD ROM. This explains why your disassembly instructions show the DVD case to slide out easily. Once I had removed the screw the DVD slid out easily.

Just another example of how helpful your site has been; I only need to type a question and the scales fall from my eyes. Thanks!

Great Site, thanks. My question is regarding the DVD-ROM drive removal from a PCG-K23 model.

I purchased this laptop new and am familiar with its operation; it has not been operated for 4 years. I recently restarted and began to use it but have determined that the DVD drive is bad. A You Tube video shows a similar model disassembly requiring only that the hard drive be removed and detaching 2 screws below the hard drive that connect to the DVD drive, popping the door open with a paperclip then slipping out the drive. I tried this method but the DVD drive does not budge.

Your description has more disassembly. I would prefer not to take a chance on breaking something or a part that is in all probability unavailable. Should I be able to pull that DVD drive out with a more solid tug (tried this with a small duckbill plier; no dice) or take a shot at your disassembly?

Thanks in advance. I am amazed you are still taking questions for such an older machine.

@ Michael,
I would check RAM modules. It's possible one of the RAM modules popped out of the slot when you dropped the laptop.
Try reseating RAM modules and test the laptop again.

Hi. Great guide! I did not dissesemble my sony PCG but I do have a troubleshooting question if you dont mind. Recently, I dropped my computer (it fell no more than an inch). Now, when I power it on, it turns on, the fan starts, the fan increases in intensity, and the system shuts off. Windows itself does not load, and the screen does not turn on. I believe that the windows installation is unplugged but thought a proffesional like yourself would have a better idea as to the cause of the problem. Any feedback is appreciated and welcome. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the help figuring this out... I had my suspicions about how it would all come apart, but it's always nice to see it all mapped out for you before you go down a new road...

When I powered it up after re-assembly, I had a problem! The system booted ok, (or at least it looked like it started to, and I know I heard the startup noise, and I don't think I heard it's shutdown noise... However the system was dead (off & would not come on) when I came back to it...) I tried a few things before discovering that it would power up momentairily if I un-plugged it and plugged it back in... Further (frantic) troubleshooting revealed it was the power button/light/speaker ribbon cable we un-plugged from the motherboard... (It wasn't plugged back in properly.) Why didn't you say to unplug the other end and leave the ribbon cable attached to the motherboard???

Is there much difference between disassembling the K model vs. the L model? We have an L model and just want to make sure we know if there are any surprises waiting for us. Oh! One more thing - is a desoldering pump necessary? Your pictures, diagrams, and explanation are very helpful. Thank you for taking time to supply this information to others! God Bless!
