Here’s how you can upgrade the hard drive in a Dell Latitude D830 laptop. No laptop experience required! The hard drive can be easily accessed from the bottom of the laptop. Simply remove two screws and pull the hard drive assembly out. You’ll have to transfer the mounting bracket from the old hard drive to the new one.
This laptop was equipped with a 80GB 7200RPM 2.5″ SATA hard drive and the author replaced it with a new 160GB 7200RPM SATA drive. You can upgrade your laptop with a larger hard drive: 200GB, 250GB and 320GB hard drive should work just fine.
IMPORTANT: You need a 2.5″ SATA drive, not an IDE drive.
These days hard drives are cheap. You can find a new 320GB drive for less than $80.
After a new hard drive is installed, you’ll have to reinstall the operating system from the Dell system restore CD witch was supplied with your laptop.
Static electricity can kill your laptop. I recommend wearing an anti-static wrist strap while working with internal parts of your laptop.

chris,
I believe they sell laptop hard drives but it could be more expensive than buying online. Remove the old drive and take it to the Best Buy store. Show the hard drive to the sales representative so they can find a compatible replacement.
