These instructions will guide you through taking apart your Sony Vaio laptop.
UPDATE: the page I was linking to is gone. Here’s another source for Sony Vaio manuals and here’s one more source.
You can use these instructions for:
1. Removing and replacing the laptop keyboard
You can find brand new Sony keyboards at SparePartsWarehouse. I purchased a few Sony keyboards from them and was very pleased with the provided service.
2. Removing, replacing or just cleaning the cooling module – heatsing and fans
If you laptop runs hot and overheats, it might be not necessary taking it apart. You can clean the cooling module with compressed air without taking it apart. Buy a can of compressed air in any local computer store and spray it inside the cooling module through the holes on the bottom of the laptop. It should take care of the overheating problem.
3. Removing and replacing the CPU
Be very careful with the CPU pins, they are fragile. After you replace the processor, do not forget to lock the socket or your laptop will not start up after you assemble it back.
I’m not sure 100% but I think the above mentioned disassembly guide will work for the following Sony laptops:
PCG-K12FP, PCG-K12P, PCG-K13, PCG-K13F, PCG-K13Q, PCG-K14, PCG-K15, PCG-K15F, PCG-K17, PCG-K20P, PCG-K23, PCG-K23F, PCG-K23Q, PCG-K24FP, PCG-K25, PCG-K25F, PCG-K27, VGN-K20P

CJ,
Do you have two memory modules installed in the laptop? Try removing memory module one by one.
Test the laptop with only one memory module in place. Try different modules in different slots.
Could be just bad memory.

Hello
i was wondering if someone could give some ideas on this problem i got.
i receive a sony vgn-c2z/b with a non working screen.
so i tested the inverter and noticed it was getting power from the mobo cable but not giving it to the lcd screen, i don’t have a lot of experience with laptops but my common sense tells me this is not good…
i also plugged an external monitor but there is no video image…
i tested the HDD and is working fine
the machine turns on, but it won’t boot, just nothing
if the cd bay is closed, then it would make reading like noises
i hear at the beginning the HDD spinning but then it stops
finally, i open some compartments, extracted the HDD, ram, battery and proceed to some deep pressured air cleaning, then put it back all together but sadly the same symptoms persist.
i can see, the power, hdd, wifi lights working, don’t know if that helps…
any ideas on the problem???
thank you very much

Thanks catchins for your comment:
I’ve said it many times before and I’ll repeat. Always reseat the CPU after removing the heat sink. The CPU is “glued” to the heat sink by thermal grease. When you remove the heat sink, you can pull the CPU from the socket and it will not make good connection with the motherboard.

Did take a FRV apart and after cleaning the inside, it did not power on.
Took a good look for those loose connections and stuff out of place, but could not find any.
While I was looking at the CPU socket after a lot of head scratching, noticed the socket was in the locked postion, so unlocked it put in the CPU and locked the socket, put it back together and it worked!
* Also make sure that you have some thermal paste to apply on top of the CPU before placing the heatsink, if not the CPU tends to operate at a higher temp that usual.
*** What seems to happen is that when you remove the heatsink the CPU tends to comeout with it, even though the socket is locked, so when you put the CPU like said above, you have to unlock and lock it with some thing like a flat headed screw driver.
Re: a manual for the FRV search the net with the terms Vaio FRV service manual.

Cal,
Thank you for your comment. I guess they removed the page with instructions. I linked to another page with many different manuals for Sony laptops.
You’ll find the link in the post.

Please email or post a link to the instructions for disassembly. The link above is wrong. Thanks!

Sali,
Have you tried removing dust with compressed air without taking it apart? You can find an air compressor and blow air inside the intakes on the bottom of the laptop until the dust stop coming through the grill on the side, then switch the direction and blow air inside the grill on the side.
I think you can find air compressor in an auto shop. Maybe for a small fee you can use it to clean the laptop. It’ll take not more then 1 minute.
