HwaR,

I have a couple questions. I’m planning to take apart my HP laptop so I can fix the fan problem. I’ve assembled a couple desktops before, but not laptops. I was wondering during reassembling process, I’d have to apply any kind of thermal paste.

Most likely you'll be removing the heat sink and it means you'll have to re-apply thermal grease on the CPU. Same way as you apply thermal grease in desktops.

I followed the tutorial and the repair was successful. This was my first foray into laptop repair. I've a few screws leftover (oops), but all is well! Thanks!

Sorry, been away. Tried that as well but the darn thing just will not budge. I even tried a pair of jeweler's pliers on the edge of the drive case but that didn't help. We decided to leave it alone until the drive totally dies, then will revisit.

Thanks again for the help.

Bill,

Yes, I agree, I’ve removed the screw and try pushing from the edge as indicated but it doesn’t move. It appears to be a no brainer.

I have an idea. Open the drive with a straightened paperclip. When you are pushing the drive from the back try pulling it by the tray at the same time.

I am wondering if it is simply that I am not pushing hard enough to separate the drive from the plug (it may be very snug). I thought of putting a flat blade screwdriver in there but was afraid it would break the plastic behind it. May try that tomorrow.

Thanks for the help & I'll let you know how I do tomorrow.

Bill,

I did as you instructed. Page 104 lists one screw which I removed. Still the drive will not budge. Are you referring to two screws on Page 105?

Nope, I'm referring to screws 1 and 2 on the page 104.
I'm not sure why you are experiencing this problem. According to the service manual it should be very easy.
1. Remove one screw securing the drive.
2. Push the drive to disconnect it from the motherboard.
3. Pull the drive from the laptop.
I cannot tell you why your drive will not get out without looking at the laptop.

Thanks for the really fast reply. I did as you instructed. Page 104 lists one screw which I removed. Still the drive will not budge. Are you referring to two screws on Page 105? If you are I'm not quite sure how to access them.

Bill,

Your guide is terrific. Ran into one problem–we cannot remove the DVD drive. All screws are removed but it will not slide out. Are we missing something?

Download this maintenance and service guide for dv5000 notebooks.
Go to Removal and Replacement Procedure chapter and select Optical drive, it's page 104. On this page you'll see two screws securing the DVD drive.
