This guide will help you take apart and clean a HP Pavilion ze5000 notebook. The cooling assembly (heatsink and fans) in this notebook is hidden under the top cover. In order to access and clean both cooling fans you’ll have to take almost the whole notebook apart.
I am experiencing ever increasing fan noise, due to the processor overheating. A quick inspection through the fan grille shows substantial dust build up and I assume that this is restricting the air flow and the thermal efficiency of the cooling mechanism.
It’s possible to clean both cooling fans without removing the heatsink as the author did. For this procedure you’ll have to use canned air or air compressor. After the top cover is removed and you can see both fans, spray compressed air into the cooling fans until they are clean and all dust is gone.
You’ll have to remove the heatsink only if you decide to replace thermal compound between the heatsink and processor.
Cleaning the cooling module with compressed air should take care of your notebook overheating problem.
Static electricity can kill your laptop. I recommend wearing an anti-static wrist strap while working with internal parts of your laptop.
