I had the same problem with my Inspiron 700m, the speakers went dead and I had to replace re-solder the wires to get them to work. I had issues with the LCD screen going blank white after being powered up for a while as well, I’ll have have to replace the LCD.

Yup, this indeed was the culprit.. did the minor adjustments and re-soldered longer wires with the same gauge to compensate the wire stress. Works great now! Mahalo!

After reading this post, I tried testing my laptop speakers (I have an Inspiron 710m) with the screen open, and shut, and various positions in between. Sure enough, the speakers only work if the screen is about halfway shut or more. That’s pretty convincing evidence that my speaker problem is actually the wires running through the screen hinge.
