Do you have a Dell Inspiron 700m laptop and internal speakers just stopped working even though headphones and external speakers still work fine? This article can help you to find the culprit and fix the problem. It’s possible that internal speakers stopped working because wires between the speaker and the motherboard got broken.
Dell Inspiron 700m laptop computers have an occasional problem with the internal speakers going dead. The drivers and audio control panels will all be working fine, and the headphone jack will work, but the speakers along the bottom edge of the screen will simply not output sound. This can be the result of the speaker wires fatiguing and breaking where they pass through the hinge from the base to the screen.
Before you start taking apart your laptop looking for broken wires, make sure to read this post. It’s possible that there is nothing wrong with the speaker wires and the problem is somewhere inside the headphone jack.
UPDATE: I just published a new guide for Dell Inspiron 700m. The guide explains how to remove the keyboard and replace/upgrade memory modules.

After reading this post, I tried testing my laptop speakers (I have an Inspiron 710m) with the screen open, and shut, and various positions in between. Sure enough, the speakers only work if the screen is about halfway shut or more. That’s pretty convincing evidence that my speaker problem is actually the wires running through the screen hinge.

thanks for the post! my laptop speaker wires were indeed severed. I had installed all sorts of drivers thinking I was doing something wrong … thank you!

Yup, this indeed was the culprit.. did the minor adjustments and re-soldered longer wires with the same gauge to compensate the wire stress. Works great now! Mahalo!
