I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop and the inverter or the CCFL tube has gone bad. Dell Customer Service [yeah, right] informed me that I need to replace the whole screen as it is one piece. Does anyone know if this is true? I am using the computer with a separate monitor and really can’t take it apart until I have the part to put in. If anyone knows this, and know the part number, I would really appreciate the help, thanks.
I don’t think you have to replace the whole screen. If you search for “Dell Inspiron 1200 inverter” here you’ll see that you can buy a new inverter board separately from the screen. Here are instructions for taking apart a Dell laptop display panel, you can use it as an example.
Static electricity can kill your laptop. I recommend wearing an anti-static wrist strap while working with internal parts of your laptop.

Hey thanks, I appreciate the help, this has been a major headache. I saw that on ebay this morning, and I will try it. I will let you know how it goes and post it to your website. If this works, believe me, I will tell everyone I know about this site. Again, thanks a lot, Gene

You may only need to replace the inverter if it is bad. The ccfl may be part of the screen itself and may not be replacable. Some people wil ltell you it is the ccfl, but if it is built into the back of the screen you may not find any way to acces it for replacement. that is possibly why Dell said the entire screen needs replacement. Which may be your best bet as you may find it is not the invereter or vica versa. If you check Ebay you should be able to find the entire screen for under $100. It could be tough to find out it is not what you thought it was the end up replacing the screen in the end.

CCFL is a part of the screen and mountned INSIDE the screen. Very hard to replace. If the CCFL lamp is bad I would suggest replacing the whole LCD.
Here’s how you can find out which one is bad CCFL or inverter with a spare CCFL lamp: testing inverter and backlight lamp.
