jonathan,

Can’t I just remove the memory and use the single slot its self ?

Do you mean remove onboard memory chips and use the laptop with external memory?
Read comments in this post: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/04/27/toshiba-satellite-a60-a65-problems/
Some people said it's possible. I haven't tried myself.

Ok. Finally after holidays spent at seaside (thinking about my poor disassembled laptop placed on my desk at home...) this night I reassembled the whole thing.

This post is from my laptop. IT WORKS AGAIN!

Obviously memory sized is decreased by 256MB, but maybe i'll found a new cheap expansion to place in the expansion slot.

Bye!

Ok. Finally today I was able to use our desoldering station and I removed the eight chips from the motherboard. Unfortunately some other components were blown away from the board... I think they were the power supply decoupling capacitors for the components which I removed, so I think they are not necessary now, as the components they have to decouple are no more there.
This night I'm going to reassemble the laptop. Let me cross my fingers (one of them actually is holding a plaster, as I accidentally touched the soldering iron... ouch!)

I'm going to do the same for my A60-217.
Maybe i'll be using the desoldering station in the company for which I work, but sometimes we also use the blade method for repairing PCBs. Will post results as soon as possible.

Agreed

Its working
Im removed 8 RAM chips on both sides motherboard
by cutting legs at one chip side, then swing chip until legs break at chip other side
after that x8 times I remove my hotrot :) rest until board was clean

then I put laptop parts together (that was a puzzle)
and its working ....

THANKS guys and girls
You are great

I used an exacto knife to carefully cut the memory chip legs on one side then just bent the chip over till the other side broke off. I then used the exacto knife to finish breaking off the legs I cut. Did all 8 chips this way and put the computer back together. Runs fine. Just ordered a 1 GB memory chip to replace the 256 MB in the expansion slot. Didnt desolder a thing. Works great.

julio jaquez,

How can I remove the onboard ram without damaging the system board. I already have the taken system board out. I will like to know if there is a right way or just disolder the board.?

Check out this comment, it has a suggestion:
I find it easuer to just cut the legs on the top of one side of he chip with a very sharp blade and then wiggle the other side to break it clean. You can then remove the legs with a small wattage iron (12w-15w I suggest). Keep the tip clean!
