Replacing screen on HP G42 or Compaq Presario CQ42

posted in: 3. Compaq & HP | 1

In the following guide I show how to remove and replace the LCD screen on a HP G42 or Compaq Presario CQ42 laptop.

In this particular case I’m removing screen  from a  HP G42-303DX model.

In order to replace the LCD screen it’s necessary to separate the display panel from the base assembly first. Otherwise you will not be able to remove the bezel. Check out my first HP G42 and Compaq Presario CQ42 disassembly guide for the display panel removal instructions (steps 1-27).

OK, let’s assume the display pane has been removed and now we can start taking it apart.

STEP 1.

Remove the screw cover from the lower right corner of the screen bezel.

Remove the screw.

STEP 2.

Remove the screw cover from the lower left corner of the bezel.

Remove the screw.

STEP 3.

Start separating the bezel from the display back cover. I’m doing that with the guitar pick. You can use a piece of plastic.

Insert the guitar pick between the bezel and back cover and slowly move it along the side. At the same time wiggle the bezel to unlock it from the back cover. There are small hidden latches securing the bezel.

STEP 4.

Continue separating the bezel with your fingers.

You’ll have to apply some reasonable force to lift up the bezel because it’s glued to the LCD screen with sticky tape.

STEP 5.

Separate the bezel on the upper side of the display and than move to the lower part.

STEP 6.

Remove the bezel.

STEP 7.

Remove two screws securing the display hinge covers.

Lift up and remove both hinge covers.

STEP 8.

Remove six screws securing the LCD assembly.

STEP 9.

Separate the LCD from the display back cover and place it face down on the table.

STEP 10.

Now you can access the video cable.

STEP 11.

Unglue the clear tape securing the connection.

Unplug the video cable.

STEP 12.

Remove the LCD assembly.

Now the screen is ready for the replacement.

STEP 13.

Remove two screws securing the mounting bracket to the right side.

Remove the mounting bracket and transfer it to the new LCD screen.

Do the same with the bracket attached to the left side.
