This guide explains how to replace or upgrade memory modules in Acer Aspire 5500 series laptop. Thanks to benardcometh.blogspot.com
Fortunately, both memory modules can be easily accessed through the bottom of the laptop. It makes the memory upgrade a five minute procedure.
According to Crucial, Acer Aspire 5500 series laptops can handle up to 4GB RAM total and you can install up to 2GB RAM module into each memory slot. Use Crucial Memory Advisor tool to find the correct memory type.

Can I use different size RAM modules? For example, I have two 512MB modules installed. Can I remove one 512MB module and install a 1GB module instead? Will it work?

Carl,
You can use two different size RAM modules. In your case, if you replace the existing 512MB module with a new 1GB module, you’ll get 1.5GB total.
But if you want to take advantage of dual channel technology (better performance), you should use two identical RAM modules.
If you want to upgrade memory in your laptop, I would recommend replacing two 512MB modules with at least two 1GB modules. In this case you’ll get 2GB total and your RAM will be working in dual channel.

Hello ! I have one question regarding Acer Aspire 1400. I have installed wifi lan card in it ( Pro/Intel 2200bg). In the device manager I can see the wifi card and also on the task bar. But it is unable to connect with Access point. I checked it with Intel utility … it is always saying that sender is not switched on….. some hardware switch is off. Do you have some adea about that ???? Thanks in advance waiting for your reply.

Harvinder,
Do you have a Wi-Fi switch somewhere on the laptop? Maybe it’s off? Some people overlook that.

faisal,
Isn’t it written on the memory module? Does it have a sticker at all?
You you have a 533MHz module installed, the second one could be 533MHz or 667MHz module. Faster modules are backward compatible with slower modules. The 677MHz module will slow down and run at 533 speed.
I believe for dual channel operations you must use identical memory modules in both slots and the capacity is crucial. For example, if you have a 1GB 533Mhz module in one slot, you have to use a similar 1GB 533MHz module in the second slot. If you install a 2GB module, the laptop will not run in dual channel. I guess you can use a 1GB 667Mhz module but for the best results I would use absolutely identical modules. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

thanks for the reply,.as u said ..for best results I would use absolutely identical modules is infact absolutely correct.,that is one must have same bus speed and capacity for dual channel to run…I hav another question, would b very appreciable if u answer,.as u said i saw on my installed memory module,it is 1GB DDR2 667 Mhz,please tell me can i use 2GB DDR2 800mhz on the other slot??..i dont know whether my motherboard supports 800mhz or not,..Is it very necessary for the motherboard to support faster bus speed if i am going to install on to it??….finally tell me if i dont put the same identical modules,i know it wont support dual channel, but if comparing 3GB ddr2 with 2 identical rams making total of 2GB 667 mhz each as u said……what will be faster,..2 gb(with dual channel support) or 3 gb ram??..thanks in advance.

I have acer aspire 5580, problem is black screen & also external monitor is not working, cpu is working, please help

hus,
Check memory modules. One of the modules can be bad.
You can remove memory modules one by one and test the laptop with one at a time. This way you can find the faulty memory module.

nuonreasey,
Your questions sounds like: “My car doesn’t work. How can I fix it?”
What do you mean by black screen?
Does your laptop starts at all? Can you hear any sounds on startup? Any LED light turning on?
More details please.

hey there.. I’ve a question about aspire 5580.. I’ve encountered a problem of black screen whenever I went to start – all program.. But the power is still on, top left hand side (and the 3rd LED from the top) is blinking. When I click the mouse, it made one ‘beep’ sound (but not countinous).. I had to manually shut off my laptop and turn it back on.. My graphic card is nvidia 8000+ series..

cepom,
It’s not very clear.
The laptop screens turns black only when you start any application or it’s black right from the startup?

Hi, Acer 4710 is it possible to change a graphic card?
currently is Radeon HD 2300 128MB MXM Video Card.
if yes , is the ATI HD4670 M96 XT DDR3 1GB MXM A Vedio VGA Card suitable with Acer 4710 .
appreciate your advice …

Kervin Chia,
It’s not possible. The graphics card built into the motherboard.

Kervin Chia,
Your memory is fine and backward compatible with DDR2 667.
You see only 3GB RAM in system properties because you have a 32-bit OS installed which cannot handle 4GB RAM correctly.
If you want to take advantage of all 4GB RAM installed, you’ll have to upgrade replace OS with a 64-bit version.

Hi,
I have an Aspire 5502NWXMi(aspire 5500 family) laptop that has been running using 2 pcs of 1GB DDR667 RAM.
recently I have purchased 2 pcs of 2GB DDR 667 RAM to upgrade the current setting to 4GB memory. However when I install both memory sticks, and power on the laptop, The power light is on but the HDD light is continuously on, the startup fan turns on but the screen is totally blacked out, not even the ACER boot-up screen can be seen.. even after waiting a few seconds.
However when Individually testing both 2GB sticks, the laptop boots up fine and the ACER boot-up screen can be seen and actually proceeds to boot-up in windows.
Please advice. Thanks!

Hi,
I have a Acer Aspire 5542-5462 notebook. I recently had a 2GB stick of ram go bad, and getting ready to replace it. The factory installed ram (as well as the system specs) indicate I need a DDR2 667mhz SO-DIMM. The ram I removed is labled: 2GB 2RX8 PC2-6400S-666-12.
I ran the Crucial Memory Advisor tool and it indicated the best match was 2GB DDR2-PC6400 800mhz -or- 2GB DDR2-PC5300 667mhz.
My question is: Is the 800mhz ram compatible with my computer, or should I get the 667mhz stick?
May 28th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
@ Curtis,
DDR2-PC6400 memory is backward compatible with DDR2-PC5300.
Just get a DDR2-PC6400 memory module.

I have 4710G Aspire. I’ve installed 2 pieces of 2gb 667 RAM. As you said before, to used all 4Gb RAM, it is essential to use OS 64 bit. Now i’m running Windows 7 Ultimate (Alienware version) 64 bit. But still, it detect only 3Gb of RAM. Is there anything can i do to utilize all my RAM.
Your advice are much appreciated.

If I upgrade using a single 2Gb stick – added to the existing 512Mb stick – will the laptop run dual channel ?
Will I be better off upgrading to 2 single 1Gb sticks ?
February 9th, 2012 at 12:51 pm
@ steve,
If the laptop supports dual channel technology, you must have identical memory modules installed in both slots.
It’s better to use 2 single 1GB sticks (again, if the laptop supports dual channel).
