This guide will help you to replace the keyboard on a Toshiba Tecra M4 series laptops. It’s not difficult at all and you can easily do this repair at home, without taking the laptop to a repair shop.
The author of the disassembly guide published basic disassembly instructions for the whole laptop but for the keyboard replacement you’ll have to check out pictures 9-12.
First of all, remove the laptop battery and unplug it from the AC adapter.
For the keyboard replacement you will not have to remove anything from the bottom of the laptop, not a single screw.
You can remove and replace the keyboard following these steps:
1. Remove the keyboard bezel with a flathead screw driver. Picture 9.
2. Remove two screws securing the keyboard. Picture 10.
3. Disconnect the keyboard cable connector on the motherboard. Be careful. Unlock the brown clip with your fingernails. The brown clip has to move away from the connector base 1-2 millimeters, not more. When the connector is unlocked, the clip stays attached to it. Again, be careful with the connector. If it breaks, you cannot fix it at home.
4. Pull the keyboard cable from the connector and replace the keyboard. Picture 11.
