The following instructions will explain how to replace the hard drive and the DVD drive in an Acer Aspire 3610 laptop. I’m not familiar with Acer laptops but these instructions could be the same for other Aspire 3600 series laptops, such as Aspire 3610, 3620, 3630, 3640, 3660, 3680.
1. Hard drive replacement instructions.
The hard drive can be easily accessed from the bottom of the laptop. Simply remove the hard drive door, remove four screws securing the hard drive caddy, disconnect the hard drive from the connector on the motherboard and remove it from the laptop.
After that remove all screws securing the hard drive to the caddy and transfer the caddy to the new hard drive.
2. DVD drive replacement instructions

The DVD drive also could be easily accessed and removed from the bottom of the laptop. First, open the DVD drive with a paper clip, then remove one screw securing the DVD drive to the laptop, and finally pull the DVD drive from the laptop.
You’ll have to transfer the mounting bracket from the old DVD drive to the new DVD drive.

I have just replaced the dvd drive in an Acer Travelmate 5720G following your instructions. I had to replace the fascia (two plastic clips) and a small metal bracket at the back for the screw to engage but I was able to use the parts off the old drive so no problem. Your instructions should work for all 5720 and 5320 machines.
Thanks!
I just wish I had found your site before I stripped out the whole undercarriage of the machine!

This is not for Aspire 3630! Aspire 3630 is much different than the unit in the pics. Disassembly is different!

deseria,
Most likely yes, if the Compaq CD drive has same type of connector as Acer CD drive.
Remove both drives and compare them.
If both drives has same size and connector type, try replacing it.

Very informative and useful guides. I have an acer laptop, pretty old now, and the DVD drive is broken and I’m guessing it has had it and needs to be replaced. I’m going to follow the guide, remove it and install a new one. Thanks for the tutorial.

Adam Saleem,
I’m not sure which one is used in your laptop. In order to find out, you can remove the drive from the laptop at take a look at the connector.
Here’s the difference between two drives: CD/DVD-RW optical drive
