This guide will give you an idea how to replace a broken screen on a Toshiba Satellite M40X laptop. The screen replacement procedure will not take more then 20 minutes, it’s pretty easy. All you have to do is remove the bezel, disconnect the cable with inverter and remove a few screws.
I found that a Satellite M40X laptop looks very similar to Satellite M35X and most likely built the same way. Here are more detailed instructions for removing the LCD screen with inverter board on a Satellite M35X.

Static electricity can kill your laptop. I recommend wearing an anti-static wrist strap while working with internal parts of your laptop.

I’m having trouble with my daughter’s Toshiba Satellite P205-6287. It used to occassionaly come up with a black screen. Then if you opened the screen past 90 degrees, the background would turn red. Now, I can’t get any display to come up at all. When I start it the screen goes from black to dark blue. No images. I can get the display to come up on an external monitor. All the connections appear tight. I took them apart and reseated them to make sure. Backlight appears to be working as the back of the LCD lights up when I turn it on. If I put tension on one side of the video cable behind the LCD it changes from a dark blue color to a much lighter blue color for a few seconds. However, there is still no writing or images on the screen. Where do I go from here?

Eldon Warman,
I just tested the link and didn’t see any virus warning. I’m running NOD32 which is one of the best antivirus software out there.
I guess there is something wrong with your antivirus software settings.
