This tutorial explains how you can removed the keyboard and replace the internal memory module in HP Compaq nw8240, nx8220 and nc8230 notebooks. All three models are very similar and you can use the same disassembly instructions.

These laptops have two memory slots. One of the memory slots (external) can be easily accessed if you remove the cover on the bottom of the laptop. The second (internal) memory slot is located under the keyboard.

These models will take up to 2GB memory total, so you can install up to 1GB memory module into each slot. You should use DDR2-4200 (533MHz) memory modules.

Keyboard removal procedure:
1. Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery.
2. Remove two screws securing the keyboard on the bottom of the laptop. These screws are marked with a small keyboard symbol.
3. Release 4 keyboard retention tabs located on the left side from f1, f5, f9 and delete keys.
4. Lift up the keyboard and place it upside down on the palm rest.
5. Unlock the keyboard cable connector on the motherboard.
6. Remove and replace the keyboard.

Are you looking for a new keyboard? You can buy it here for $20-30.

If you are replacing the internal memory module, you don’t have to disconnect the keyboard from the motherboard, simply place the keyboard upside down on the motherboard.
After that remove four screws and loosen another four screws securing the thermal plate and remove the plate from the notebook as it shown in the third picture.

Before lifting the thermal plate up, you’ll have to disconnect the fan plug. It’s highlighted in the picture. You should be able to pry it off with that small flathead screwdriver - just be sure you don’t sever any wires or poke through to the motherboard.

The internal memory expansion slot is located right under the thermal plate. Remove the original memory module and replace it with a larger one.

Also, you can find complete step-by-step disassembly instructions in the maintenance and service guide for HP Compaq nw8240, nx8220, nc8230 notebooks here.
