This excellent disassembly guide published at LaptopLogic.com explains how to remove the keyboard and replace the hard drive on a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ series laptop. Unfortunately, you cannot access the hard drive from the bottom of the laptop, it’s necessary to remove the keyboard. The hard drive is located under the palm rest.
If you want to replace the keyboard, you can find a new one using this part number: 1-479-647-92. Be very careful when you disconnect the old keyboard from the motherboard.
If you read through the comments you’ll see that some people successfully replaced the original hard drive with a larger 200GB or 250GB drive. Also, you can speed up your system by installing a faster 7200RPM hard drive instead of original 5400RPM drive.
Keep in mind you need a Serial ATA hard drive, the regular old Parallel ATA drives aren’t supported on the VAIO SZ series.
Are you looking for spare parts for your Sony Vaio VGN-SZ series laptop? Search here.
In the next post I’ll explain how to remove the LCD screen and inverter board.
UPDATE: Here’s another step-by-step guide for taking apart a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ series laptop.
Static electricity can kill your laptop. I recommend wearing an anti-static wrist strap while working with internal parts of your laptop.
