This guide explains how to remove the display assembly from a Dell XPS M1530 laptop.
Question: Is it necessary to remove the whole display assembly from the laptop if I want to replace the LCD screen?
Answer: No, it’s not necessary. You can replace the LCD screen while the display assembly is still attached to the laptop.
In order to replace the LCD screen you’ll have to:
1. Remove the display bezel.
2. Remove all screws securing the LCD screen to the display cover.
3. Removed display hinges.
3. Disconnect the video cable and remove the screen.
You can find a new LCD screen replacement for Dell XPS M1530 here.
Questions: It looks like the inverter board is attached to the LCD screen. Can I replace the inverter without replacing the screen?
Answer: Yes, you can deattach the inverter board from the LCD screen and replace it separately.
The above mentioned disassembly guide is a good visual supplement to the official service manual for XPS M1530 series laptops.

Hello Everyone.
Here is my lil XPS M1530 story. I have my XPS for about four years and gradually the Backlight became dim. Then after a while, I couldn’t seem to boot. In fact, the LCD would’nt power up. Initially it was intermitent though, which left me nervous each time I had to reboot, because, It often wouldn’t power up after the power cycle.
one day, the screen stayed off for good. and I began to wonder what could be the cause.
I replaced the dim CCFL (neon tube) and the Inverter (which is apparently the magical device that power up the Neon !) but oh noes..
the screen still wouldnt turn on. I knew it wasnt the video chip because I could see windows starting up if i pointed a flashlight near the Screen.
So out of idea i decided to download the XPS schematic and I found out that there is a fuse on the motherboard. the fuse goes by the “F2″ name. it’s on the right side of the LCD cable. on top of C66 and C69 *thingies* if my memory is good. The fuse in question is rather small but i thought I could try to make a bridge. and Uh ? OMG That wus it ! Look mom, IT WORKS !
So May be you guys could check that lil F2 fuse if neighter the replacing the CCFL/inverter, or reflowing the video chip solved your issue.
in fact, the fuse in question seemed to have vanished in my case, so may be you could check if there in fact a fuse in place before replacing the whole motherboard. It may be just that. I personally used a thin foil and some electrical tape. but it seemed hot somhow so maybe somthing that offer more resistence could be better. It’s not within the human power to do this kind of part replacement, it’s fery fery tiny.
Okies ! Wish you the best of luck solving your LCD Issues on your good ole XPS !

Hi, I’ve got a dell xps m1730. It’s out of warranty as of March. 2 weeks ago I shut it down at dinner, after which I turned it on and received the dreaded “black screen of death” with the pointer in the middle. I tried rebooting, and got the same thing. I could not go into safe mode, or repair advanced mode, or f5, or f8, nothing. I called dell and paid for a one time support. We ran diagnostics out the ying yang, and got nothing. I backed up my important files, pictures etc., then tried to reinstall the operating system. It would not reinstall. They told me it was my hard drive. I purchased a new drive, did the install, and now all it does is boot up, goes into the windows recovery screen, then reboots. I can choose all the different options, but it does nothing more than reboot. I ran custom diagnostics on everything and it passes. They are telling me the only other option is to replace the motherboard. So, my question is what are your thoughts? Have you ever run into this? I’m so frustrated. Is replacing a motherboard doable? I have a desktop from 95 that I keep upgrading parts on, so I have some experience. What if I replace it and it doesn’t work? Then what, graphics card, sound card, ram, cpu? good god what else?

My daughter has a Dell M1530 and the screen started to go black about 2 weeks ago, after about 10 mintues in to using it. If you put the screen under a light you can see the system is still working, it is just so dim you can barely see it. Can you please tell me what we have to do to get it working right. My daughter thought it might be a fuse of lamp going out. I took it to Staples (what a rip off) they had it for over 24hrs and tell me they could replicate the problem and as soon as I took it home there it went again…Please help! thanks!!

Terry,
Yes, it’s possible. But… there are wireless card antenna cables running inside the display assembly. If you remove the display assembly, you’ll have to disconnect wireless card cables too. Without them internal Wi-Fi card will not work. In this case you’ll have to use an external wireless card.
The laptop disassembly instructions also available in the Dell service manuals.

Is it possible to remove a laptop display assembly and only connect the external monitor?
Thanks,
Terry

Hi there,
I bought a new LCD screen for my XPS m1530 and got brave enough to attempt at changing it. I did everything right and was very careful. When I got it back together my computer started up or so you could hear the windows starting… my screen stayed grey and one side is darker than the other, but it is lit up and is grey. What could I have done wrong? I did not buy Dell parts I bought a generic brand but from a company that specializes in screens. Did I mess up the invertor while changing it out?

jay,
Could be bad video cable. Maybe it has a pinched wired inside the harness.
First, try reseating the video cable connector on the motherboard. If it doesn’t help, I guess you’ll have to try replacing the cable.
This magnet is a part of the lid close switch.
When the display is closed, the magnet activates the switch located inside the laptop base and because of that the laptop goes into hibernation/sleep mode (depends how you set it up).
This magnet should be installed inside the display panel, under the screen bezel. The place is about 2.5 inches on the left from the webcamera.
I have a Dell XPS M1530 on the bench right now and when I move my screwdriver along the screen bezel it sticks to the spot I mentioned. About 2.5″ on the left from the camera.
