This guide explains how to remove the display assembly from a Dell XPS M1530 laptop.
Question: Is it necessary to remove the whole display assembly from the laptop if I want to replace the LCD screen?
Answer: No, it’s not necessary. You can replace the LCD screen while the display assembly is still attached to the laptop.
In order to replace the LCD screen you’ll have to:
1. Remove the display bezel.
2. Remove all screws securing the LCD screen to the display cover.
3. Removed display hinges.
3. Disconnect the video cable and remove the screen.

Questions: It looks like the inverter board is attached to the LCD screen. Can I replace the inverter without replacing the screen?
Answer: Yes, you can deattach the inverter board from the LCD screen and replace it separately.

I think your problem is related to the screen inverter, it’s a power supply for the LCD screen. When inverter is going bad the backlight stops working at all or it works only for a short period of time, like in your laptop. I would try replacing the inverter board first. It’s not expensive, you can find a new one here for under $20.
You can use this service manual for XPS M1710, it has disassembly instructions. You can see the inverter board on the 12th picture, it’s right under the LCD screen.

I have a Dell XPS M1710 notebook and it has a problem with the screen. It’s out of warranty. When I turn my notebook on it start fine and works fine for about 10-15 minutes. After that the screen goes really dark. I still can see that there is a very faint image on the screen. After I restart the notebook the screen is bright again but it goes off soon. Do you think I have to buy a new screen?
