This guide will help you to remove and clean both cooling fans and heat sink inside a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT170 notebook. In order to access the cooling module (fans and heat sink) you’ll have to remove the keyboard, so you can use this guide for replacing the keyboard too.
Why would you need to clean the cooling module?
Let’s say you are experiencing the following problems:
1. The keyboard and the bottom of the laptop are very hot.
2. Cooling fans work all the time and make a lot of noise.
3. Your laptop shuts down on its own without any warning or error message.
Usually it’s an indication of overheating and you can fix all there problems by cleaning the cooling fans and heat sink.
Laptop cleaning is very important, as a laptop cools itself using a rather large heatsink, and one or two (sometimes even three) small, high rpm fans…making it a dust magnet. Failure to maintain cleanliness on the inside of the box can and will result in overheating, and sluggish performance due to high temperatures.
Express cleaning technique:
1. Lift up the keyboard so you can access the cooling modules. It’s not necessary to disconnect the keyboard from the motherboard, simply place it face down on the palm rest.
2. Spray compressed air inside both cooling fans until all dust is gone and the heat sink is clean. You can use canned air sold in any local electronics store.
