When I try to turn on my notebook the key board lights up, it starts to boot then stops, shuts down and repeats the cycle. The screen does not come up during all of this. The cycle is about tree to four seconds long. It has been suggested that the power supply might be bad. What do you think? Also I am having some trouble getting this thing apart to inspect for loose connections. How do I open this sucker up ? Thank you for any help you can give me! This is a HP Pavilion ze 4400 notebook.
Does this happen if you start the laptop on the battery power, without power supply plugged in? If yes, then most likely it’s not the power supply problem.
First of all I would check the memory. Try reseating the memory module, make sure the contacts on the module are clean. Try moving it from one slot to another. If reseating will not help, find a known good memory stick and test the laptop again. Try starting the laptop without the hard drive. Sometimes a failed hard drive can halt entire system.
Finally, minimize the laptop as much as you can. Check all connections. Remove all devices and leave only three main parts: motherboard, processor and memory. Test the laptop with an external monitor. If you still experience the same problem most likely you have a failed motherboard.
The maintenance and service guide for HP Pavilion ze4400 has step by step disassembly instructions. Take it apart at your own risk.

thank you that was quite helpfull, it turns out that the motherboard may be bad. someone ells said perhaps the power supply but that seems to be integral in the unit. you asked about the battery, it does not seem to be charging. the only way i can get any signs of life is with the external cord attached. and it does the same thing with or without the harddrive installed. moving the ram had no efect either. Im thinking of listing it on E-bay unless I can find a motherbd new or used cheap enough.
thanks again! ……Sean

I think its worth mentioning that some motherboards have repairable GPU’s and if you have a failed GPU the computer will most likely not post.

My pc HP pavillion zv5000 (zv5242qv) stopped booting up. The pc will start; then show the HP icon: give you esc and f10 choices, but then goes dark. It will not respond to the f10 or imput choices. (although, it did respond to them once)
I have tested the power on my zv5000.ok voltage ok– I resat the 2 memory cards. I tried starting without the hard drive. I tried to do the memory test CD..it will not run. It appears that many zv5000 have bad mother boards. Is that something too difficult to replace? How do I get the correct part number for the zv5242qv model?
October 13th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Warren,
You’ll find motherboard removal instructions in the service manual for zv5000 notebooks.
Take a look in the memory module compartment on the bottom of your notebook. It’s possible that you can find the motherboard part number in there, it should be on a sticker.

My hp pavillion dv9000 tries to boot you see the screen with the hp logo for a few seconds then it goes black and a message blinks rapidly in the top left corner. something like invalid boot. I think I may have deleted some important boot files. It was working fine before I messed with it yesterday. Id like to try using a recovery disk to reinstall the missing files, but have little money to spend on the disk from HP. Is there someway I could download a free copy from a site to a disk? If so, how do I reinstall the missing files? I can get to the bios screen, but it wont let me start in safe mode. Thanks for your help. M

My hp pavilion dv9000 is not booting up,i took it apart to add a new cpu and screen put it back together and now all i get is the lightning button blinking with the power suply in and out. What happened at first the screen came on for a few seconds and now it wont do anything?
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Nicholle Hawley,
Why did you decide to replace the CPU in the first place? Do you think the CPU is bad? From my experience CPU failures are very rare.
Did you install the same type of CPU as the original one? Maybe your new CPU is not compatible?
If your laptop stopped booting, the first thing to check would be RAM.
What did you experience when it stopped booting? Was it completely dead? Did you get any LED lights or noises coming from the laptop?
February 28th, 2009 at 8:21 am
My HP Pavillion dv9000 is doing the same thing. Failed at boot up, nothing on the screen, all LEDs are lid but power cycled after about 5-10 sec. I replaced the CMOS battery after testing foe voltage. Re-seating the RAMs. Removed main hard drive. Problem remained the same. Any suggestions? I didn’t open up the laptop yet.

I have the same problem with my HP Pavilion dv6000. Until laptop is cold, it turns without any problems. But after a few moments, it does not react. when I run it again he behaves as well as a HP Pavilion ze 4400 notebook. Notebook starts to boot then shuts down and repeats the cycle. I tried reseating the memory module; I tried starting the laptop without the hard drive but there was no effect..
Where can I find motherboard removal instructions for HP Pavilion dv6000?
Sorry for my English.

Andrius LTU,
You’ll find step-by-step motherboard removal instructions in the maintenance and service guide. Follow this link. It’s a pdf file and might take some time to load.

Another consideration for this cycling problem is overheating due to lint / pet hair inside the laptop. This happened to a friend of mine.
Just remove the battery pack and the case screws so that you can crack it open a bit, then use a vacume cleaner or compressed air hose to blow out the junk.

Roberd Lee,
Are you getting an error message, the laptop restarts or what?
June 27th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
I have the same problem. My HP DV6000 starts with a black screen and reboot. This repeats for 3 times until he shutdown. My first idea was to replace the heatsink cause the fan does not work. After reassembling the fan turns on but the failure is still the same. I connected an external TFT Monitor on the VGA Port – nothing happened. I cleared the CMOS by removing the battery, still the same error. I changed the RAM with another 512K Module – nothing changed. Even with no RAM installed the DV 6000 gives no error .. ? No beep – nothing. If i install (additionally) the HDD, the DV 6000 start up one time ! and shut down. Have anyone an idea, i’m afraid the motherboard is the reason for this problem.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Mike,
Unfortunately, your description does sound like a problem with the motherboard.
Very few laptops will produce a beep error message when memory is removed.
By the way, maybe your dv9000 laptop qualifies for a free repair from HP?

Hi,
I have a HP dv6000 series and it has the same problem (shuts on and off repeatedly) and I can’t even get the recovery disk to run as it shuts off every 25 seconds!
I removed the motherboard, tried to start up without it, put it back when it’s starting and either way, keeps doing the same thing (on and off with or without the motherboard). I removed the RAM as well and did as with the motherboard and nothing, keeps doing it. All lights go on when it starts and the fan runs ok………………I did send my laptop to HP for the enhanced guarantee last year (they changed everything (CPU, BIOS etc!) and now I have the same problem! HP wont repair it again and I just want to recover my files. Is there anyway to get it to work for at least one more time?
Thanks!

Have someone remove the laptops HDD and install it in a portable HDD enclosure. This way you can attach to a desktop with a USB cable and get your data.

I have an Inspiron 6000, the hard drive was removed a few months ago by an employee and it was lost, we just replaced the hard drive and are recharging the battery, it’s blinking green, when we press the on button, we see the dell log for a second, then the computer shuts off, is this a battery charge issue?

Got my sons dv6000 out of the cupboard today, it had been there for about six months, as it had the same problem as above with not booting up and black screen. I put one of the recovery cd disk that i had made before it went bad in. After several minutes whirling inside the screen finally started up and asked If I wanted to recover start up or something similar. After system recovery It’s working well again. hope this helps someone.

jan,
Can you hear the cooling fan working? Maybe the laptop shuts down because of overheating because the fan failed? Just a guess.
July 11th, 2010 at 10:06 pm
So there are about 10 people on here with the same problem on their HP dv6000 or 9000. Make that 11 counting me. When I hit the start button the computer cycles on and off, and the HD light flickers but doesnt stay on. It almost seems like every time the computer tries to access the HD it shuts off, then restarts. Could this problem be due to a short in the power supply to the HD?
With so many people having the same problem, can’t you come up with an answer? And HP.. they are a disgrace. I apid over a thousand bucks for this pile pf crap. HP makes Toyota look like saints. Actually, I would buy another toyota any day, but I would slit my throat before I will ever buy an HP product again. To add insult to injury, it caME WITH wINDOWS Vista loaded, perhaps the worst opwrating system in the last 20 years. Microsoft, HP, in collusion to sell people pure crap!

I own HP dv9000 , same problem as the other 11, mine will start after many attempts by pressing F12. Everything works fine, checked everything I could think of, I never get an error on startup, it just will not start. I contacted HP before it dies all together and was told to do Recovery and send it to them BUT did not mention that I qualify for free repair. Is that offer still standing? Is there an official posting from HP?
HP tells me that by doing the recovery any programs I installed would be discarded… so I can’t decide what to do. If the notebook works fine when I am able to start it, nothing seems slow or different, wouldnt it be simpler if HP told us or suggested what the problem might be before I wipe clean my notebook?
BTW , this dv9000 was a replacement I got at no charge from HP, when my FIRST notebook ‘unrepairable’…..

I have an HP DV6439. When I press the power button sometimes the computer stays on and other times it just goes off. I have removed the battery and memory modules and pressing the power button seems to help the computer to stay on, the fan running and all indicating lights lit, not blinking. The screen remains black. It runs for about 15 to 20 seconds and then powers off by itself and alnmost inmediately restarts, runs for another 15 to 20 seconds and powers off again. It does this for 4 times and at the ned of the fourth time it just stays off. Is this a motherboard problem?
I appreciate your help.

I have a dv6040ca, i left my computer in sleep mode for about 2 hours, plugged in, came back, flipped it open and i had a blank screen. so i powered it off and tried rebooting, nothing on the screen, then after like 15 seconds it reboots and keeps trying, i see the hard drive light blink once wen it starts, nothing else. its like its not accessing the hard drive.
i just recently replaced the screen, i wonder if that might have nething to do with it. Took out the hard drive connected it to desktop pc via usb and it worked, so it is not the hard drive. I have taken computer studies and know enough about computes, to know that HP should fix this problem for free. I have not dropped or kept it in rough shape, so it should function correctly. I have tried everything possible, well not everything, but i shouldnt have to on a $1700 laptop. I called HP and they told me to just buy a new one from them…funny guys
January 14th, 2011 at 3:13 pm
In my experience with quirky issues like this, I always go back to the BIOS and reset it to its default values– make sure to SAVE the default values before exiting as I sometimes move too quickly for my own good and forget to Save Changes and Exit. I will assume you know how to do this (look for the correct button upon bootup as it flashes quickly across the screen– F10 for my current laptop). If this doesn’t work then think back to the last item(s) that you changed before the problem occurred. I read about a problem online where someone reset their video drivers back to the default version and it fixed the problem. Good Luck.
January 14th, 2011 at 3:21 pm
Just re-read that problems are occurring on hp dvt6000s and dvt9000s– my boss’ laptop died within a couple months of the end of warranty and we determined that it was not the HDD. He returned it under warranty and they replaced the mainboard. I had to return my dvt7000 due to keyboard LEDs that failed into the 3rd quarter of the first year (Mute LED/button, Wireless LED/button, and NumLock LED). Tried resetting BIOS and updating keyboard drivers– nothing worked. Returned it a couple of days ago. Will update with what they did when I receive it back.
January 14th, 2011 at 5:38 pm
Just remembered another situation where the problem you describe above occurred. I travel to different customer sites as part of my job. At one particular site, my current laptop would bootup intermittantly: sometimes it would bootup and allow me to logon, then would recycle by itself and reboot again; sometimes it would not even let me bootup at all but simply recycle until I hard-powered it off (held Power button down). I found that by disabling my wireless network, the problem would go away… sometimes. But sometimes, long enough for me to get some work done. Never did figure out how or why this happened. I believe it had something to do with the sites wireless system although my laptop never registered a wireless network around. My last, two cents.

I Have A eMachines Netbook And I When I Turn On My Computer The Start Up Screen Comes On And It Starts Up For About 5 Minutes Then It Stops Then Starts Again And I Don’t Know What’s Wrong Or Why It Won’t Start Up Completely
March 10th, 2011 at 11:42 pm
Makiya,
It’s hard to tell what is wrong.
Does it boot to the desktop?
This could be memory related problem.
May 14th, 2011 at 9:48 pm
I have this exact problem on a Gateway MT6460, motherboard #31MA3MB00B1. Tried reseating memory disconnected hard drive, did all that, nothing.
But if I reseat the processor and disconnect the cmos battery to reset the bios, I can get it to work for about an hour before the same problem starts again.
I’m guessing a bad capacitor. None of the capacitors are visibly damaged, BUT…
(I wish I could send you a picture) There are 3 connections labeled pc 234, pc 265 and pc 266. I’m guessing they are power capacitors because the board labels them “pc”. I’ve never seen laptop capacitors (only desktops) before, so I am a little confused by this. It seems these caspacitors don’t have leads or holes, they just solder to the top of these 2 little aluminum plates.
Well, the pc 234 is missing a capacitor and it seems likely one was soldered on the top because of slight scratches on the aluminum. I know this mobo is used by different models, so there is no way for me to tell if there really is supposed to be a component in the pc234 connection. It is my sister’s computer and she is not sure if a little part fell out when she opened the machine 6 months ago and fiddled around in there. Obviously I’m not going to risk finding a capacitor and soldering it on there because I don’t want to blow anything up. Again, I wish I could send a picture…
Anyway, I’ve been trying to get this answer for weeks now… If you or anybody has an Gateway MT6460… Will you please please please check if there is a power capacitor in the pc234 connector???
It is located almost directly under the heatsink FAN (as close to the edge of the motherboard as possible) right under the fan. You will see 3 black components arranged in columns labeled on the motherboard pc234, pc 265, and pc 266 right under the black electrical tape.
Or if anyone can send me a picture of the mobo. I’ve looked for pictures of this mobo online forever…
Thank you so much!!

Same guy as the last post…
I noticed the no thermal paste on the aluminum of the heatsink attached to the processor. I haven’t taken the heatsink and fan off since my sister bought it years ago, and it worked fine up until this problem (maybe after the years it goes away or it was such a thin layer I can’t see it). If I put thermal paste on the heatsink, could that possibly fix the problem?
Maybe it is overheating, because if I reset the bios it will work for an hour, then freeze. then it will boot up and run for maybe 15 minutes. It will do this maybe 3 times before it goes into the rebooting loop with no post.
If a computer constantly crashes from overheating, Is it possible the computer sends a command to the bios to just shut down and not post anymore until the bios is reset?
I’m going to get to the store and buy some in the next few days. But i also don’t know about the GPU. It has one of those bubble gum pad heat sinks. Should I put thermal paste on the rubber heat sink as well, or should I somehow remove the rubber heatsink, or just leave the gpu heatsink alone.
I’m guessing the GPU isn’t the cause of the problem, but I figure if I’m in there anyway with paste in my hand, I might as well service that area as well. Thanks!!
May 16th, 2011 at 7:56 pm
JoeyJon,
Is it a Dell laptop? I’ve seen many Dell heat sinks where thermal paste looks like some thin black stuff spayed on the aluminum foil.
When I install a heat sink like that back into the laptop, I remove the black stuff with paper towel and alcohol and apply some regular thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink.
Did you check the cooling fan? Is it spinning at all? Does your laptop feel hot on the bottom after a while?
Not sure about the signal to the BIOS but it’s possible the laptop doesn’t turn on because the CPU still hot.
If the laptop crashes, wait for 10-15 minutes and try turning it back on again.
I wouldn’t touch the GPU thermal pad. If you want to remove the old thermal pad you’ll have to replace it with another thermal pad. You cannot use regular thermal grease on the GPU chip. You use regular thermal grease only on the CPU.
Again, don’t touch the GPU thermal pad. Reuse the old one.
If you remove the thermal pad and replace it with thermal grease, there will be a gap between the GPU surface and heat sink and the laptop will overheat for sure.
May 16th, 2011 at 9:03 pm
Thanks for the info, it really helps!
Yeah, when I start my computer, the fan is the only thing that works! I hear (and can see) the fan going, but no post. I get steady indicator lights that just stay on for the dvd rom and the hard drive. usually the hard drive light blinks when it is doing something, but these lights just stay lit until the computer reboots itself.
It is a Gateway laptop. If there ever was thermal paste on it, it doesn’t matter now because I ordered a new heatsink and fan and it didn’t come with thermal paste.
After it decides not to start up again, it will never start again until I reset the bios and reseat the cpu. I have let it sit for a couple of days, and it it still won’t start, so it’s not because the cpu is still hot.
anyway I’ll make it to the computer store Friday and get some thermal paste and let you know if that does the trick.
Thanks for telling me about the gpu. I am used to desktops where there is a graphics card with it’s own fan so this issue has never come up for me.
By the way this site rocks with all the great pictures.
May 16th, 2011 at 9:23 pm
JoeyJon,
This doesn’t sound like heat related issue. I doubt that replacing thermal grease will make any difference.
In order to start a laptop with video you need the following three components: motherboard (I assume the graphics card integrated into it), processor and memory.
If the laptop turns on but has no video on the internal OR external monitor, it means one of the three major components is bad or not connected properly.
You can try minimizing the laptop to bare bone system and test it this way.
It’s possible one of the memory modules is bad. Have you tried removing memory modules one by one? If not, try it. Test the laptop with each memory module separately.
May 17th, 2011 at 11:04 am
Yeah, I don’t think it is the paste, either, but I’m running out of options.
Yes, I tested the memory modules one by one..
I also took the dvd player and the hard drive and the memory and tested it that way, same result.
Then I looked for bad components on the motherboard, then I saw that missing component on connection pc234, but I don’t know enough about electronics to be sure if it needs that component. Like I said the motherboard is used in other computer models.
I’m just going to try the paste and give up. If one day I happen to come ascross a picture of the motherboard I’ll see if it has that component for the MT6460.
Otherwise it is time to give up I’m guessing.
I;m assuming if the processor is bad, it would never work, insteadof working sometimes for about an hour.

I have a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop and I have encountered a problem two days ago. While I was working on it connected to the net , a blue screen came on and then it went off, I didn’t know what top do , I tried to switch it on again and it doesn’t boot, got it checked by a technician who says that the hard disk needs to be replaced. What should I do? The battery also needs to be replaced. I cannot find the right one for it anywhere here.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:29 am
@ Pearl,
If the hard drive failed, you’ll have to replace it with a new one.
I have posted a guide for taking apart Dell Vostro 1510 notebook here: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/take-apart-dell-vostro-1510-notebook/
The guide explains how to access and remove the hard drive.
After the hard drive replaced, you’ll have to run Dell installation CD to reinstall Windows OS and drivers.
New batteries available for sale on Dell website.

I have a compaq presario f761 and it won’t start. I press the power button and it comes on and then just shuts off after a few seconds and then it comes back on again. I have already had this problem fixed 2 times before, the first time the hard drive was replaced and the motherboard was repaired, and the second time I’m not sure what was repaired. I’ve read online that this is a common problem with the f700 models. If you have any idea what the problem could be I would greatly appreciate any help.
September 23rd, 2011 at 9:51 am
@ Seryna Duve,
Here’s something to try.
1. Remove the hard drive and turn on the laptop. If the laptop still reboots on its own, the problem is not related to the hard drive.
2. Try removing memory modules one by one. Test laptop with each memory module separately. Try different slots. If the problem still there, most likely it’s not related to memory (very unlikely that both memory modules failed at the same time).
If removing the hard drive and reseating/replacing memory doesn’t help, probably this is motherboard issue.
Failed video chip maybe? http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2011/02/23/fix-laptop-motherboard-with-failed-nvidia-graphics-chip/
October 10th, 2011 at 5:52 am
not much point in reading this page really is?
there.Replace hard drive, motherboard inc screen driver chips and memory but it might be a power supply fault too -so what’s left -the plastic case – the rubber feet on the bottom get a grip if you can’t help people don’t post. The simple answer go down to PC World and buy a new laptop keep the execs and share holders at Acer/Compaq/ Dell happy. Prooves what I’ve always felt about laptops -and I go back as far a Compaq SLTs (1988) they aren’t really worth the cash.

i have a gateway laptop that keeps booting up every 2 seconds im not too sure what happened but it does that when i take the battery out with only the power wire charged in it i tried pulling things out putting it back in n its still nothing i was trying to get into the motherboard but i cant seem to find it.. can someone please help me its a nice good computer its a gateway windows 7 ultimate please im in dire need of help thanks
December 23rd, 2011 at 7:01 pm
@ hawaii,
There are two things you can try:
1. Test this laptop with another known good AC adapter.
2. Test the laptop with only one memory module installed. Try different slots.
If it doesn’t help, most likely this is motherboard failure.

Everyone who is bagging on what this guy has recommended are jerks (@ Steve) and don’t know there head from there butt (DEFINATLEY @ STEVE). This is a perfect troubleshooting procedure as to how to properly diagnosis and pin point this problem. i too had the same problem and after narrowing down the CD drive then battery i finally got to the RAM and simply removed it, cleaned it and then it all worked fine. Not that i needed this blog but i can see how this will help others. Power boot issues with NO bios or display is usually always a RAM issue. Thanks again.

Hi there,
Having a problem at start up with my Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. It was working fine until I got the screen replaced. When I turn it back on, I got a message that the HDD password was needed. This laptop was given to me by a friend and she has no recollection of setting a password. There is no password for anything else, not even an Admin pw, only the freaking HDD password. Is there anyone who can help me here.

Well, thanks anyway, but I got my laptop fixed… yayyy I’m so proud of myself!!! And of course, always having Websites like this one to help others like me when money is always in the middle of getting everything fixed.
I’m not very savvy in computers, but I’ve learnt somehow to do this and that. So if anything I can help with, just let me know.
Thanks so much for the opportunity and God Bless!!!

@ Haydee,
Did you fix the HDD password error? How did you do that?
