When I try to turn on my notebook the key board lights up, it starts to boot then stops, shuts down and repeats the cycle. The screen does not come up during all of this. The cycle is about tree to four seconds long. It has been suggested that the power supply might be bad. What do you think? Also I am having some trouble getting this thing apart to inspect for loose connections. How do I open this sucker up ? Thank you for any help you can give me! This is a HP Pavilion ze 4400 notebook.
Does this happen if you start the laptop on the battery power, without power supply plugged in? If yes, then most likely it’s not the power supply problem.
First of all I would check the memory. Try reseating the memory module, make sure the contacts on the module are clean. Try moving it from one slot to another. If reseating will not help, find a known good memory stick and test the laptop again. Try starting the laptop without the hard drive. Sometimes a failed hard drive can halt entire system.
Finally, minimize the laptop as much as you can. Check all connections. Remove all devices and leave only three main parts: motherboard, processor and memory. Test the laptop with an external monitor. If you still experience the same problem most likely you have a failed motherboard.
The maintenance and service guide for HP Pavilion ze4400 has step by step disassembly instructions. Take it apart at your own risk.

@ rgelcomz,
Sounds like heat related issue. Try cleaning the cooling module. Most likely the heatsink and fan are full of dust. The laptop shuts down because the CPU overheats.

Hello there
I am currently having a problem with my Acer Aspire 4736ZG, I posted and was hoping if someone could help me solve this. i looked over hundred of posts and forums in the net, tried this, tried that, but still none of those worked.
This problem occurred about 2 mos ago and became so frequently happening until i wasn’t able to use it anymore. my notebook began shutting down while i was in a middle of playing a downloaded and installed game “sniper Ghost Warrior”. I cant barely finish a level without my laptop shutting down on its own. This happened a couple of times and thought that this has to do with the game, so i immediately uninstalled it.
After that, the sudden shutdown still goes on while i was surfing the web until it became so frequent to the point that right after i power on my unit and booting starts, it automatically shuts down, when i try to power on again, same thing happens.
The trickiest part was i bought this notebook in Taiwan and has Chinese characters appear while booting so if its a BIOS thing or something, i cant mess around with it.
I also thought that it might be the battery, or the power supply, so i tried using another functioning battery and power supply but it still didn’t do any good.
I still haven’t sought the help of a repair shop coz that could cost me much. i’m still trying to figure out the problem and the solution on my own with the help of those who can.
Was the problem hardware related? or might be some kind of a virus/malware/software case?
Is there anyone here who could help me solve this? Your help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

@ Haydee,
Did you fix the HDD password error? How did you do that?

Well, thanks anyway, but I got my laptop fixed… yayyy I’m so proud of myself!!! And of course, always having Websites like this one to help others like me when money is always in the middle of getting everything fixed.
I’m not very savvy in computers, but I’ve learnt somehow to do this and that. So if anything I can help with, just let me know.
Thanks so much for the opportunity and God Bless!!!

Hi there,
Having a problem at start up with my Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. It was working fine until I got the screen replaced. When I turn it back on, I got a message that the HDD password was needed. This laptop was given to me by a friend and she has no recollection of setting a password. There is no password for anything else, not even an Admin pw, only the freaking HDD password. Is there anyone who can help me here.
Thanks in advanced, your help is greatly appreciated.

Everyone who is bagging on what this guy has recommended are jerks (@ Steve) and don’t know there head from there butt (DEFINATLEY @ STEVE). This is a perfect troubleshooting procedure as to how to properly diagnosis and pin point this problem. i too had the same problem and after narrowing down the CD drive then battery i finally got to the RAM and simply removed it, cleaned it and then it all worked fine. Not that i needed this blog but i can see how this will help others. Power boot issues with NO bios or display is usually always a RAM issue. Thanks again.

@ norhady,
I think you are correct. It could be bad DC jack or motherboard failure. Cannot tell without looking at the laptop.
I found this page with Acer laptop manuals.
Hope it helps.

@ nordady,
Have you tested your laptop with another working AC adapter. This could be AC adapter related failure.
