I accidentally stepped on the LCD screen of a Samsung laptop and now it shows cracked line and dead pixels (black pixels around the lines). From the front of the LCD screen I can’t touch or feel any visible cracks. So does that mean the LCD is broken from within? Also I found it is extremely expensive to buy another LCD screen from anywhere (cost at least 250 euros). Does it have to be the exact LCD model or any 15 inches Samsung LCD is fine? Thanks in advance!
Even if you cannot feel the crack, the LCD is still broken and has to be replaced. You are right, LCDs are extremely expensive and actually it’s the most expensive part in the whole laptop. I would definitely search for exact same LCD model. If you buy any 15 inches Samsung LCD you might run into the following problems:
- Connector for the inverter board might be different
- The video cable connector might have a different shape
- The connector could be the same size and shape but require a specific video cable
- The backlight lamp might require a different inverter board
To buy a correct screen you’ll have to open up the laptop display panel and search for the screen model on the back side of the screen. You can use this Dell laptop guide as an example.
Static electricity can kill your laptop. I recommend wearing an anti-static wrist strap while working with internal parts of your laptop.

Hi,
Thanks for the answer C.J. But is it possible to take the LCD panels (3 LCD pieces??) out of the casing of a same size + resolution Samsung LCD (excluding connectors, backlight lamp etc.), and then use the pieces to replace the cracked ones? I read your previous instruction on removing the LCD pieces from a DELL and then transfer them to another DELL which had a dirty LCD. So is this the same case as mine? Also, I did a search on screentekinc and it appears that they have 75 Samsung screens for my X20.
thanks,
Lee

Lee,
In my case I transferred only the internal layers but I didn’t transfer the LCD.
In your case the LCD is cracked and I’m not sure if you can transfer it. There could be many different problems – the video cable connector will be different, the circuit board (attached to the LCD) might be shaped differently than the original one, the LCD might require a specific video cable, etc…
Before you purchase a new screen call the seller and ask them witch LCD you should use. Maybe you don’t have to transfer anything and they have your screen (or a substitute) in stock. Call them first.

Is this a vertical line about 1-3 pixels wide running from the top of the screen to the bottom? If yes, this is a problem with the LCD screen.
