If you have a laptop with broken power jack this jack replacement instructions will be very helpful.
The power jack is the socket on the back or on the side of the laptop where you plug the power adapter. If the power jack gets broken the laptop will not start at all or you’ll get a problem with charging the battery. It is possible to fix this problem at home but you have to be ready to disassemble your laptop and remove the motherboard because in most cases the power jack is soldered to the motherboard.
Here are some symptoms of a broken or loose power jack:
1. The laptop appears to be dead. Power LED and other LEDs will not light up when you plug the power adapter. Most likely in this case the power jack is broken and has to be replaced.
2. The power LED lights up only if you adjust the power plug inside the power jack, you have to wiggle a little bit. After a wile the power LED goes off and you can temporarily fix the problem by adjusting the power jack again. Most likely in this case the power jack is not making a good connection with the motherboard and has to be resoldered.
3. The laptop battery charges only when the laptop is off and the power adapter is plugged. When you turn on the laptop the battery stops charging. This scenario is similar to the example 2 and most likely there is connection issue between the power jack and motherboard. The power jack has to be resoldered.
In order to replace or resolder the power jack you’ll have to disassemble the laptop and examine the power jack. If the jack is broken, replace it with a new one. If the jack is loose, resolder it.
These instructions will explain how you can resolder or replace laptop power jack yourself. Be careful, this job is only for people with computer repair experience.
Static electricity can kill your laptop. I recommend wearing an anti-static wrist strap while working with internal parts of your laptop.
