Every now and then my computer will just freeze and the display goes to a whitish blue screen. The picture just fades away into the new whitish blue screen. Then I have problems loading windows after a restart. It will ask me to start normally, or last known good configuration that worked. Every now and then I can get it to work but most of the times it just does the white screen freeze. Has anyone ever encountered something like this? or know something I should do?
It’s a Compaq Presario v2000 laptop.
First of all you’ll have to narrow down the problem and find out witch part of the laptop is failing – the display or video card. Restart the laptop with an external monitor attached and test the external video output.
If the external monitor fails the same way as the laptop screen, probably there is something wrong with the video card. If the video card is integrated into the motherboard, you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.
If the external monitor shows a good image and doesn’t fade into the whitish blue screen then it’s not a problem with the video card, most likely something is wrong with the screen.
It is possible that video fails because of the video cable, it might be loose or defective. First, I would try reseating the video cable on both ends – on the motherboard and also on the back of the LCD screen. Then I would replace the video cable. And finally replace the screen.
Can you get the video reappear on the screen if you move/torque the screen? If you can, probably it’s a bad screen and there is nothing wrong with the cable.
I don’t think this is a software related problem but I would try starting the laptop in safe mode. If it doesn’t fail in safe mode, try reinstalling the video driver.

IIKaruII,
If the hard drive fails to pass the test, most likely it’s a bad drive. It’s also possible that there is something wrong with the hard drive controller on the motherboard, but it’s an uncommon failure. I would go with the hard drive replacement first.
Is it just plug and play? Yes, it is but you still have to reinstall the operating system after the replacement.

It is most certainly a hardware issue. I suffered the same problem with a Winbook J4 which I still own.
The solution, soldering down the loose video connector on the MotherBoard.

Wait a minute….I hear what you all are saying, but what happens when my HP is only 3 months old….I am getting the same white/blue screen daily …… it freezes and I have to reboot.
I’m not going to go to all that trouble when my laptop is still new. If this problem is so prevalent with HP surely it would be an “internal” manufacturer problem.

Gloria,
Do not disassemble the laptop yourself. It still covered by HP warranty. Send this laptop to HP for repair.

@ Chibuzor,
Does it work with an external monitor? Can you see external image?
