Asus Q500A-BHI7T05 disassembly

Today I will disassemble an Asus Q500A-BHI7T05.

Make sure the laptop is turned off before you start taking it apart.

STEP 1.

Unlock and remove the battery.

Remove battery

STEP 2.

Remove two screws securing the service cover on the bottom.

Lift up and remove the cover.

Remove HDD cover

STEP 3.

Under the cover you can access the hard drive, both RAM modules and wireless card.

This laptop supports up to 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-12800 SODIMM RAM modules.

Access HDD and RAM

STEP 4.

Remove four screws securing the hard drive bracket to the case.

Hard drive screws

STEP 5.

Slide the hard drive assembly to the left to disconnect it from the motherboard.

Lift up and remove the hard drive.

I recommend replacing this regular 2.5″ SATA hard drive to a 2.5″ SATA solid state drive. Doing so will improve the laptop performance significantly.

Disconnect hard drive

STEP 6.

Using a sharp object remove the optical drive screw cover located on the bottom.

Optical drive screw

STEP 7.

Remove one screw securing the optical drive.

Slide the drive to the left and pull it out of the laptop.

Remove optical drive

STEP 8.

Remove all shown screws from the bottom of the laptop.

There are three different types of screws and I circled them with different colors.

Four “red” screws are the same length as “yellow” screws but a little bit wider.

Eight “green” screws are smaller.

Bottom screws

STEP 9.

Using a plastic stick or a similar tool start separating the top and bottom covers from each other.

Separate bottom cover

STEP 10.

Continue separating the top palm rest/keyboard assembly from the bottom.

Removing the top cover assembly probably the hardest part in this guide.

The motherboard attached to the bottom cover.

Continue removing cover

STEP 11.

Be careful when you lift up the top cover. There are a few cables connecting it to the motherboard.

Top cover cables

STEP 12.

Let’s disconnect cables one by one.

Disconnect four cables

STEP 13.

The power button board cable glued to the fan with double sticky tape.

Carefully separate the cable from the fan.

Unglue power button cable

STEP 15.

In order to disconnect the cable you’ll have to:

1. Lift up the cable retainer – white tab on the connector (green arrow).

2. Pull the cable from the connector.

Disconnect the second white cable (touchpad) the same way.

Disconnect power button cable

STEP 16.

Unlock the keyboard connector (green arrow) and pull the cable out (yellow arrow).

Disconnect keyboard cable

STEP 17.

Disconnect the keyboard backlight cable. The connector is very small.

Disconnect keyboard backlight cable

STEP 18.

Now you can remove the palm rest/keyboard assembly.

Remove palm rest assembly

STEP 19.

On the other side of the assembly you can access the power button board and touchpad.

Also, it’s possible to separate the keyboard from the cover and replace it separately.

I don’t shown how to do that in this guide but I think it should be very difficult.

Replacement keyboards for Asus Q500A laptops available on eBay for $30-40.

Power button board

STEP 20.

When the top cover removed, you can access and remove (if necessary) the power connector.

Power connector location

STEP 21.

The power cable secured to the case with yellow tape. Remove the tape.

Unglue power cable

STEP 22.

Lift up the DC jack from the case.

Lift up DC jack

STEP 23.

Disconnect the DC jack cable from the motherboard.

You’ll have some limited access to the connector but it’s definitely can be done without removing the whole motherboard.

Disconnect power connector cable

STEP 24.

Remove the power connector assembly. Now you can replace it if necessary.

Remove DC jack connector

STEP 25.

Both audio ports located on a separate USB/audio board.

If one of the ports failed, just replace the entire board.

USB audio board

STEP 26.

Before you can remove the motherboard, it’s necessary to disconnect two antenna cables from the wireless card located on the bottom.

Disconnect Wi-Fi antenna cables

STEP 27.

Disconnect five cables from the motherboard.

Disconnect motherboard cables

Remove tape securing the display cable connector and unplug it.

Unplug video cable

Unplug two more cables located in the upper right corner.

Unplug two cables

Disconnect and unplug the USB/audio board cable.

Unplug USB audio cable

Disconnect one more cable located on the left side from the display connector.

Cable on the left

STEP 28.

Remove six screws securing the motherboard.

Remove motherboard screws

STEP 29.

Start removing it from the case as shown on the following picture.

Lift up motherboard

STEP 30.

Remove the motherboard from the bottom case.

Remove motherboard

STEP 31.

On the other side you can access the CMOS battery.

CMOS battery

STEP 32.

In order to remove the cooling fan assembly, you’ll have to remove four screws securing the heatsink and unplug the fan cable.

    IMLTech,

You do a great job on these guides… I have previously benefited from (and donated to) your HP “dv6500…etc” guide. I remember it was like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (compared to some of the other stuff I was finding online)!

Now I am dealing with an Asus laptop I recently acquired… My question is: do you know of a good source for Asus parts? (Aside from Chinese sellers who promise the world and 6 weeks later, you get your order and find out its completely different from what you bought)…. Sigh!

I am looking for a Touch screen for a laptop model that was just recently released and so it isn’t available at all (at least I cannot find one). Even Asus won’t sell me a replacement. They would “prefer it if I shipped the laptop to them for repairs”. Yeah… I am sure they would like that!

Thanks in advance for any information.

      @ Omsh,

I am looking for a Touch screen for a laptop model that was just recently released and so it isn’t available at all (at least I cannot find one).

Sorry, cannot help here. It’s very hard (if possible at all) find a touch screen for newer Asus laptops.
Have you tried searching on eBay?
Also, maybe you can find a laptop with damaged motherboard but good screen and use it for your repair.

They would “prefer it if I shipped the laptop to them for repairs”. Yeah… I am sure they would like that!

This might be your only option at this time. I guess it depends on how much they want for the screen replacement.

I recently purchased a Q500A that has a “sticky” touchpad. Replacement is $20, how hard would it be to take the old one out and put the new one in? I’m not scared to take this thing apart, I’m just wondering if it looks possible. Thanks!

    • IML Tech

      @ Gabriel Rzadkiewicz,

how hard would it be to take the old one out and put the new one in?

I haven’t done it myself but I think it’s not difficult. If you search on eBay for “Q500A trackpad” you’ll find the trackpad pictures and it looks like designed to be easily replaceable. It looks like a module that you can swap. It’s necessary to remove the top cover case as shown in the step 19 but it’s not difficult either.

i exactly have same model, as you know it has 3th generation i5, so i was wondering can i upgrade new 5th generation i7 ?

Hi, i spilled coffe to my Q500….everything still work perfectly fine, but the keyboard is off and sticky be ause of the sugar….but only the small part of it on the left side (it only spilled right on that spot).
    My questions are:
1.How do i know if other parts of the computer isnt broken?

    2. Do you think i need a keyboard replacement? Or i just need to clean it and i wll be fine? How do i know?

    3. Where can i get the “kit” that you are using on this guide?

    Plsss helppppp and thank you

Uhhh does any one know that you DO NOT have to do any of that to change the COS battery???
Step one- remove the cover and expose the HDD and Memory banks.
Step two- just right of the memory cards you will see a 1/2 x 3 in window… remove the black tape inside this window and Wha La the battery! changed it in 3 min.

Hi is there a workaround if I just want to disassemble enough to be able to access and clean the fan? Or do I need to do all of the steps? Thanks.

I have Asus eee pc 1015cx – BLK024W.One week ago one morning I found my built-in webcam is not working (I purchased this computer with DOS and later installed windows 7 professional 32-bit as recommended nearly 3years ago and 1 year ago I had to reinstall it again and as assus driver don’t support later verson of windows I never upgraded it, ) but there were never been problem regarding webcam/microphone. while webcam not detecting microphone was working fine. 5 days ago built-in microphone stopped working too but all drivers are working properly. So I thought it is hardware failure, most probably connction problem (this laptop never took any hard hit from ant thing). So I purchased a camera-mircophone connector for asus eee pc 1015cx from e-bay. but now the problem is how do I dissassemble it’s webcam and microphone to replace it’s connector? I see no screw in LCD pannel but only 4 screw under battery. please help!

I have the same computer and it has a modular(removable) Intel i73632QM Processor with embedded HD 4000 graphics.. processor rocks but the graphics don’t. I read somewhere once that there is one other i7 that will work as well, but I don’t remember the model.
    -Good Luck!

Hi – thank you for providing such a detailed explanation. I’ve recently had issues with the screen where it starts going fuzzy/displaying visual errors before going blank. When I apply pressure to the back of the screen when closing the laptop, the screen goes back to normal – but it then goes back to blank after I stop applying pressure. I assume based on this error/remedy that there is a lose or faulty wire somewhere. Would you have any idea which wire(s) or components could be causing the issue? I’ve taken the computer apart as specified and everything on/around the motherboard seems to be plugged in correctly. I was going to try opening the monitor to see if I could see any loose wires in there, but wanted to ask if that’s wise before embarking on that journey. Thanks!
