These instructions explain how to access and remove the CPU from a HP zd7000 notebook computer. Fortunately, you can easily access the CPU from the bottom of the laptop, all you have to do is remove the fan cover. Also, if your notebook overheats, you can follow the above mentioned guide for cleaning cooling fans. It’s not difficult. Just remove the fan door and clean fans and heat sink with compressed air. Spray air inside the fans until the dust stop coming from the openings on the side of the notebook. Some people clean their notebook fans with a vacuum. Warning! If you are cleaning your notebook with a vacuum, do not touch the motherboard or other parts. Vacuum creates static electricity and it can kill the motherboard. Cleaning fans once a month will prevent overheating and keep your notebook much cooler.
If you are removing the heat sink be careful with the CPU.
Once you loosen the four screws you will gently pull up on the heat sink. Be careful as more often than not the processor gets stuck to the heat sink. Be extremely gentle as you do not want to pull it out at a weird angle and then bend all of the processor pins.
Make sure the thermal grease on the top of the CPU is still fresh. Dried out thermal grease looses its thermal conductivity and has to be replaced. Remove old thermal grease from the top of the CPU and heat sink with an alcohol wipe and apply a layer of new thermal grease on the CPU. Assemble everything back together.
Possible problems after reassembly:
1. Laptop will not start. In this case make sure the CPU is properly seated in the socket on the motherboard. Try reseating the CPU.
2. Laptop still overheats. In this case check if both fans are connected to the motherboard. It’s possible that you forgot to connect fans. Also, make sure that there is thermal grease on the CPU.
