I just called HP about my Presario V6000. The power LED is not lighting and it won’t do anything. They didn’t even give me any hassle. They are sending a fedex box and its free to repair.

Ok well after connecting it to an external monitor and upon booting it showed the HP logo on the external monitor and the Windows XP logo, although right after Windows XP starts both screens go black…Monitor? Or Inverter issue?
Thanks again

I have a HP DV2000 and nothing on either the screen or external monitor. Is there anyway to test to determine the exact problem? I would hate to buy another screen and it still not work.

Hey, I have a Pavilion DV9000 laptop which I bought in Italy two years ago, I live in the UK now and I get nothing on the screen when I power it up…The backlight is there but nothing comes up on screen…Just black..I have not tried hooking an external monitor to it just yet, but is there anything else I can do? I checked with the product tables on HP’s website and I dont have a product number ending in “R” so I cant have the extended repair…
Thanks In advance

Regarding my 7 FEB post; I got the laptop back a week after I sent it in. Works as advertised! They replaced the motherboard and heat sink. That said, I have incredible new found respect for HP… I use Dell at work and the Gov’t insists on buying OLD technology… so, good for taxpayers until the mental stress overwhelms us and we go on Rx’s for the rest of our lives…
But regarding Joe’s post: I was in your shoes after I removed the memory one at a time. It didn’t like that and everything I read said that the BIOS needed to be reflashed. So I went to HP’s site and downloaded the .exe bios flash, put that in the DVD and started it up… waited patiently and nothing seemed to happen. I shut it down about 20 minutes into the nothingness (I could hear the DVD spin up, but had the display driver failure so I couldn’t see what was going on). Anyway, the next day I started it up and the bios flash took and then I was back to just having the display failure.
HERE is the best info I have though: if the bios flash doesn’t work, call HP customer support, lead them down the dead motherboard scenario… they’ll offer the 1 year extended warranty for $99. You could just say yes and know that your bill won’t exceed $99… or you could gamble and maybe it is the motherboard and they swap it free. You only have 7 days left though!!! Best of luck!

I just replaced the hard drive, due to a security descriptor data stream error (beeps) and chkdsk would not stop running. I now have a loud humming noise being emmitted from the cooling fan. The fatal error screen came up on me this morning, but then it started okay. Can any of these problems be associated to the motherboard? I had the beep beep beeeeep too, but after I replaced the hard drive, it went away.

Joe,
This doesn’t sound like a memory related problem but just in case you can try removing memory modules one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately. It’s possible that one of the modules is bad and forces the system to reboot.
The last troubleshooting step would be removing all parts you can access. Minimize the system as much as you can. Remove hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card, etc… Leave only main parts such as motherboard, processor with the cooling module, memory modules. Try turning it on again. If you still experience the same issue, most likely you have a bad motherboard.

Thanks for reply Laptop Tech.
I removed hard disk drive, powered up with external power; icons light up on power up, followed by 1-2 of a “kick”, repeating cycle same as before (when hard drive was docked). No change in behavior observed.

Joe,
Try removing the hard dive. What happens if you start the laptop with the hard drive removed? If the laptop still starts and reboots on its own, probably it’s bad motherboard.

My dv6000 is dead; icons light up on power up, followed by 1-2 seconds hard drive kick, stops and then resets, over & over. Lid display remains dark all time. Any hints? Thanks.
