Ok well after connecting it to an external monitor and upon booting it showed the HP logo on the external monitor and the Windows XP logo, although right after Windows XP starts both screens go black…Monitor? Or Inverter issue?
Thanks again

I have a HP DV2000 and nothing on either the screen or external monitor. Is there anyway to test to determine the exact problem? I would hate to buy another screen and it still not work.

Hey, I have a Pavilion DV9000 laptop which I bought in Italy two years ago, I live in the UK now and I get nothing on the screen when I power it up…The backlight is there but nothing comes up on screen…Just black..I have not tried hooking an external monitor to it just yet, but is there anything else I can do? I checked with the product tables on HP’s website and I dont have a product number ending in “R” so I cant have the extended repair…
Thanks In advance

Regarding my 7 FEB post; I got the laptop back a week after I sent it in. Works as advertised! They replaced the motherboard and heat sink. That said, I have incredible new found respect for HP… I use Dell at work and the Gov’t insists on buying OLD technology… so, good for taxpayers until the mental stress overwhelms us and we go on Rx’s for the rest of our lives…
But regarding Joe’s post: I was in your shoes after I removed the memory one at a time. It didn’t like that and everything I read said that the BIOS needed to be reflashed. So I went to HP’s site and downloaded the .exe bios flash, put that in the DVD and started it up… waited patiently and nothing seemed to happen. I shut it down about 20 minutes into the nothingness (I could hear the DVD spin up, but had the display driver failure so I couldn’t see what was going on). Anyway, the next day I started it up and the bios flash took and then I was back to just having the display failure.
HERE is the best info I have though: if the bios flash doesn’t work, call HP customer support, lead them down the dead motherboard scenario… they’ll offer the 1 year extended warranty for $99. You could just say yes and know that your bill won’t exceed $99… or you could gamble and maybe it is the motherboard and they swap it free. You only have 7 days left though!!! Best of luck!

I just replaced the hard drive, due to a security descriptor data stream error (beeps) and chkdsk would not stop running. I now have a loud humming noise being emmitted from the cooling fan. The fatal error screen came up on me this morning, but then it started okay. Can any of these problems be associated to the motherboard? I had the beep beep beeeeep too, but after I replaced the hard drive, it went away.

Joe,
This doesn’t sound like a memory related problem but just in case you can try removing memory modules one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately. It’s possible that one of the modules is bad and forces the system to reboot.
The last troubleshooting step would be removing all parts you can access. Minimize the system as much as you can. Remove hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card, etc… Leave only main parts such as motherboard, processor with the cooling module, memory modules. Try turning it on again. If you still experience the same issue, most likely you have a bad motherboard.

Thanks for reply Laptop Tech.
I removed hard disk drive, powered up with external power; icons light up on power up, followed by 1-2 of a “kick”, repeating cycle same as before (when hard drive was docked). No change in behavior observed.
February 8th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Joe,
Try removing the hard dive. What happens if you start the laptop with the hard drive removed? If the laptop still starts and reboots on its own, probably it’s bad motherboard.

My dv6000 is dead; icons light up on power up, followed by 1-2 seconds hard drive kick, stops and then resets, over & over. Lid display remains dark all time. Any hints? Thanks.

We have the dv6000 and it recently started the beeeeeep beep beep on startup with the blank screen… it was intermittent at first, but fairly consistent now. Anyway, called hp; they initially were ready to sell me down the river, but I protested kindly and they relented. However, they really pushed the extended warranty. I declined pending repair, as I don’t need an extended warranty on a laptop that is dead… IMPORTANT NOTE: they said that the program covering the dv6000 motherboard will expire FEB 28, 2009. So, if you are in doubt about your laptop’s m-board, ask before it’s too late. I’ll repost here w/ whether or not they were able to help and whether or not it was free.

sam,
Call HP customer support and ask.

If I bought my laptop in Oct. 2006 will it still be covered under the service enhancement program because my laptop was working fine until it just shut off. I thought it was hibernating and then it was making a beeping sound and it turns on to a black screen. Now the computer won’t start on or it turns on with a black screen.

PH,
I don’t know. You’ll have to call HP and explain your situation. Please let us know if they do.

Hi there
I bought my dv9000 when I worked in the
States in 2007 and it’s giving me problems (like the ones listed above), but I live in South Africa. Will HP still fix it for free (incl. shipping etc.)?
Thanks

Just got my dv9000 back from HP repair under Limited Warranty Service Enhancement so better keep an eye on that “great machine” before your 24 months are up! Bought mine Aug 2007. Had no picture, would not start.

We had a HP DV6000 start doing the long Beep, two short beeps. It is used as a editor for our news department. I did the chat with HP support, and they ran me through some stupid tests and then checked warranty. This computer is at least 2 years old. He came back and said it was out of warranty but talked to his supervisor and is sending out a box for me to ship it in. Sucks as we won’t have it while it is repaired but cool they are taking care of it.
We had problems with the wireless on this one before too. Sometimes it was there, other times it was not. funny. Guess HP realized they had a lot of lemons on this one. My personal dv9000 series is a great machine, except for Vista…

December 22nd, 2008 at 12:44 am
Kenneth,
Minimize the laptop as much as you can. Remove hard drive, CD/DVD drive, unplug the LCD cable from the motherboard. Now test your laptop again with an external monitor. If you are getting the same beep error, most likely there is a problem with the motherboard.

yeah, I called them up, they shipped a box out overnight and returned the computer a week before the expected delivery date. Awesome possum! v6000

I have a dv2202T having the same problem with Frank Sulik, one long beep and two short beep then no display. I had tried to reconnecting the memory modelus one by one but it’s still remain the same. Unfortunately my warranty was up 2months ago, and product number is not listed under free service despite my series is listed.
Anyone can help me , or else i have to replace the mother board which is pricey.
December 11th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Frank Sulik,
I just searched the HP maintenance manual and didn’t find anything about this error message. I assume HP nknows what they are talking about, BUT just in case try reconnecting memory modules. I think there is a chance that your problem is related to memory. It’s just a guess.
If you have two memory modules, try removing them one by one and test the laptop with each module separately.

I have a dv6000 laptop that just started failing power on self test. One long beep and two short beeps, and no display which HP says is a video problem or motherboard problem. My 24 month warranty was up on Dec 1, and it is now Dec 11th. HP will not repair the unit for free even though my warranty expired 10 days ago. is there anything I can do to get HP to honor the repair for free?
Thanks
