How to disassemble Acer Aspire 7551G

posted in: 1. Acer | 87

In this post I show how to disassemble an Acer Aspire 7551G laptop.

I will be taking apart the base and removing the motherboard.

It’s possible this guide will fit some other Acer Aspire models. If it works for you, please mention the model number in comments below.

Before you start the disassembly process, make sure it’s turned off and battery removed.

NEXT 4 STEPS EXPLAIN HOW TO REMOVE THE HARD DRIVE, MEMORY AND DVD DRIVE.

STEP 1.

Remove four screws securing the hard drive and memory cover.

Lift up and remove the cover.

STEP 2.

Remove one screw securing the hard drive caddy.

Slide the HDD assembly to the left to disconnect it from the motherboard.

Lift up and remove the HDD assembly.

If you are replacing the hard drive, you’ll have to transfer the mounting caddy to the new drive.

My Acer Aspire 7551G had a regular 2.5″ SATA HDD installed.

STEP 3.

Both memory slots located on the bottom.

Remove both memory modules.

STEP 4.

Remove one screw securing the DVD drive.

Pull DVD drive to the left and remove it.

NEXT 7 STEPS EXPLAIN HOW TO REMOVE THE KEYBOARD.

STEP 5.

You’ll find six latches securing the keyboard on the top.

STEP 6.

Push each latch into the case with a screwdriver and at the same time lift up the keyboard a little bit so latches stay inside.

STEP 7.

Lift up the keyboard and place it upside down on the palmrest.

STEP 8.

Now you can access the cable connector underneath the keyboard.

You’ll have to unlock the connector, release the cable and only after that remove the keyboard.

STEP 9.

On the following picture the connector shown in the locked position.

In order to unlock the connector, lift up the left side of the brown locking tab. The tab will open up at a 90 degree angle.

STEP 10.

On the following picture the connector shown in the unlocked position.

Now you can pull the cable from the connector.

STEP 11.

Finally, lift up and remove the keyboard.

Now you can replace it with a new one if needed.

NEXT 9 STEPS EXPLAIN HOW TO REMOVE THE MOTHERBOARD.

STEP 12.

Remove all screws from the bottom.

STEP 13.

Remove five screws securing the top cover assembly.

Disconnect the following cables from left to right:
– power button cable.
– touchpad cable.
– speaker cable.

STEP 14.

Lift up one side of the top cover assembly and start separating it from the base.

STEP 15.

Remove top cover assembly.

STEP 16.

I’m going to remove the motherboard so it’s necessary to disconnect wireless card antenna cables from the card.

You can leave the wireless card attached to the motherboard.

STEP 17.

Disconnect the video cable from the motherboard (top left arrow).

Disconnect the USB board cable from the motherboard (bottom right arrow).

By the way, when the top cover is remove you can access the CMOS battery.

Acer Aspire 7551G uses a regular CR2032 3V CMOS battery which can be easily removed and replaced.

STEP 18.

Lift up the right side of the motherboard and start removing it from the base.

STEP 19.

Before you remove the motherboard you’ll have to unplug the DC jack harness.

STEP 20.

The motherboard has been removed.

STEP 21.

You can access the cooling module on the bottom side of the motherboard.

The cooling fan attached to the heat sink.

In order to remove the cooling module you’ll have to loosen six screws and unplug the fan cable from the motherboard.

After that you should be able to separate the cooling module from the motherboard and remove it.

STEP 22.

In Acer Aspire 7551G the DC jack is not soldered to the motherboard. It’s attached to the power harness.

The failed DC jack harness can be easily removed and replaced with a new DC jack harness.

I spilled Cola on the keyboard and it stopped working. Your guide helped me to replace the keyboard and it took only 20 minutes. Thank you very much!

Guide works on 7551-7422 and all other base 7511 models. Thanks for the guide.

    Dear Sir,
I have an old TravelMate 505 Series laptop, Model No. 1901-_N214 3882B348. It served well till something went wrong with its Windows, said to be 98 B. This is perhaps not available, being obsolete. I wish to use its screen, on a Compaq through its side access where I use a bulky CRT type monitor. I wish to dismantle screen of Acer from its base unit and use it as a second screen, as an auxiliary.

I saw the two connections between the screen and the base, when a technician opened it. One has a multi pin male-female adaptor, and the other a taped bunch of wires. In case I can be helped, I shall be so very grateful. Thanks in advance.

Hi! thank you for this excellent site of yours.
Ive dismantled an Aspire 5741 and everything went fine until trying to remove the motherboard. Its crazy, the wireless chip is somehow attached to both the plastic skeleton AND the motherboard in a way you cant take it apart. I dont know what they mean with this since I have the pdf for repair for this model and doesn’t say anything about this. It looks like they melted the plastic and attached it..

  6. Ed

ok, they had used some-kind of tape and glue… it was tricky..

Hi, would I be able to take apart my ACER and replace all the parts and basically make a new laptop?

    • IML Tech

      @ Rap,

Hi, would I be able to take apart my ACER and replace all the parts and basically make a new laptop?

Do you mean upgrade all parts or replace with exactly same parts but new?
      Most laptops are not upgradable.

Hey there… The power jack in an Acer Aspire5810TZ ; is it coneected to the mother by a wireing Harnes or is it soldered to the bord directly.

    • IML Tech

      @ Patrick,

The power jack in an Acer Aspire5810TZ ; is it coneected to the mother by a wireing Harnes or is it soldered to the bord directly.

The power jack is soldered. It’s soldered to the DC power board, not the motherboard.
You can buy a new jack and resolder it, or you can buy a new DC power board and replace it.

I believe the DC power board has the following part number: 48.4CR01.011
You can buy a new or used DC power board on eBay for about $30-60. I think it’s better to replace the whole board than just the jack. It’s faster and not very expensive.

Where would one add a bluetooth card for an aspire 7551 which did not come with one? Is it the third bay beside the RAM under the big cover?

    • IML Tech

      @ LDF,

Where would one add a bluetooth card for an aspire 7551 which did not come with one?

There are very small USB Bluetooth adapters available on the market. Find one, plug it into the available USB port and install the driver. That’s it. It’s not necessary to disassemble the laptop.

How much disassembly is required to clean out the cpu/heatsink of dust? Do you need to go through the complete removal of all those parts, or can you just remove the back cover?

    Thank you.

    • IML Tech

      @ bladebarrier,

How much disassembly is required to clean out the cpu/heatsink of dust? Do you need to go through the complete removal of all those parts, or can you just remove the back cover?

You cannot just remove the back cover.
In order to clean the cooling module you can do the following:
      1. Buy a can of compressed air and blow it into the fan grill on the bottom and side until all dust is gone. In most cases this works very well.
      2. You can remove the top cover assembly as it shown on the step 15 and get access to the fan. Again, clean fan with compressed air.

  11. LDF

Thanks for the reply IML Tech, however I wanted to install an internal chip.
The broadcom bluetooth module does mount nicely to the screw post that is in that third bay under the large door at the bottom. I’m not sure if this is where the bluetooth module usually is on these compys since I couldn’t find any info or pics of them with cards installed already. The cable then has to be routed to the other side of the motherboard to the jack labelled “BT1.” This requires removal of the top cover assembly as the jack is under the trackpad area. Don’t forget to hit F3 to enable bluetooth before trying to install the driver software found on Acer’s website, or it will not recognize that you installed a bluetooth card. Hope this helps others!

  12. LDF

P.S. In step #17 above, the “BT1” jack can be seen directly beneath the yellow arrow pointing to the USB board plug.

    • IML Tech

      @ LDF,

P.S. In step #17 above, the “BT1″ jack can be seen directly beneath the yellow arrow pointing to the USB board plug.

Can you just plug the Bluetooth module into the connector and glue it to the motherboard with double sticky tape?
Look closely around the connector, are there any studs for the Bluetooth module mounting?

How the original hard drive was mounted?
      What is your laptop model?

Very informative, thanks, I just replaced mh hrad drive with a 7200rpm hybrid drive. Next step will be upgrade to 8GB of RAM. Any idea what the connector next to the RAM slots is used for?

  15. Pat

Do you by any chance know the part number for the cooling fan? Mine has become very noisy and I want to replace it.

    • IML Tech

      @ Pat,

Do you by any chance know the part number for the cooling fan?

      Try this one: 60.PT801.001
I think that’s the right fan for Acer Aspire 7551G laptop.

  16. Sups

Hi, I was wondering how do you remove the Power Button cable, Touch Pad cable, and Speaker cable? Your guide doesn’t go in detail on how to remove them.

I don’t have close up pictures for this particular model, but take a look at this guide:

maybe someone can help with a problem i have. i’ve replaced the heat sink and fan then put everything back together. the laptop didn’t start up so i disassembled and reassembled the laptop once more. this time before putting all of the screws back in i decided to test it out. i put in the battery, plugged it up and it worked. i went to shutdown and finished putting the last few screws in. when i tried to start it up nothing happened. battery does appear to be charging as the charging light does light up. stays a constant orange color.

It sounds like it’s not assembled correctly. Maybe you are using wrong length screws and they are shorting something?
Maybe you have a pinched cable and it shorts something?
There is no way I can help without looking at the laptop but you can try the following.
Disassemble it one more time to the point where it works properly and start putting back together testing after each step.
      For example:
      – connected LCD screen – test.
      – installed top cover assembly- test.
      – connected keyboard – test, etc…
Probably this is laptop assembly related issue.

I have an Aspire 7551-4722 and would like to add a bluetooth module.
I have a bluetooth module that I had pulled from an Aspire 8920G.
I was able to install it into an Aspire 5102WLMi (the cable was compatable.)
I am looking for the pinout of the BT1 connector or where to get an inexpensive cable.

    Question #2
What cards are available for the mini2 (mini PCIe full size) slot?
I have tried wireless cards and they are not detected, do I need to enable that slot with a fn key combo?

    • IML Tech

      @ Sparky,

I have an Aspire 7551-4722 and would like to add a bluetooth module.

You can buy a new Bluetooth module with cable for Acer Aspire 7551 laptop on eBay. It’s only about $12.

What cards are available for the mini2 (mini PCIe full size) slot?

Not sure about that. Maybe BROADBAND WWAN MINI PCI-E CARD?

Hey, great site, very informative!! I’m hoping maybe you can help me out with something, but it’s a bit of a stretch:

I just recently bought an Acer Aspire 7551G-7606 and now I desperately need firewire connectivity. I see above that the DVD drive and usb and wirless boards are all removable is there any way to swap one of them for firewire, or otherwise add firewire connectivity? Thanks for your help!

    • IML Tech

No you cannot swap them for firewire.
But you can buy a Firewire to USB converter. You can find them on eBay.

  20. Jay-Lo

I tried the adapter cables already and they do not work at all…from what i understand the way usb and firewire handle feeding data to a computer are totally incompatible and that will never work….unless theres something else i need, or dont know….

  21. steve bushey

when you remove the panel that covers hard drive in a acer aspire 7551, going from left to right you have the hard drive then the memory in the middle then on the right side there is a empty what goes there

  22. Pete

My Acer 7551 was working great now won’t boot up. I’m not sure but I think it may have gotten wet while traveling and it was in a suspend state, not shutdown. How can I determine whether it’s the motherboard or something else?

  23. Carlos

Can I change the video card on this computer? I have been looking into a ATI Radeon Mobility 5650, but I know sure it can be done on this laptop. Thanks

  24. Michael Woznicki

HI. Very nice site. I have an Aspire 7551 with an Athlon II P320 CPU; I’d like to upgrade it to the Phenom II (listed below) Each of these are are listed on the Acer Aspire 7551 CPU option list.

    Current:
    AMD Athlonâ„¢ II dual-core processor P320/N330 (1 MB L2 cache, 2.10/2.30 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 25/35 W)
    AMD M880G Chipset

    Upgrade:
    AMD Phenomâ„¢ II quad-core mobile processor N930 (2 MB L2 cache, 2 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 35 W), P920 (2 MB L2 cache, 1.60 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 25 W)

Can this be done? I found a Youtube video replacing a CPU on a different Acer model, and it seemed straightforward, once the CPU is accessed, though access to that CPU was much easier than this.
    Thanks for any help.

  25. Rycheforce

first off id like to say that ur sight is very helpfull in many areas, however i don’t see much as far as the video cards. i have ati mobility radeon hd 4250 that is integrated. i do know that this means it’s soldered to the motherboard. so my question is can i get a professional to replace it with a better one or do i/can i replace the motherboard with a better graphics card for gaming?

    • IML Tech

      @ Rycheforce,

so my question is can i get a professional to replace it with a better one

No, you cannot replace the integrated video card. Hypothetically, it can be done with the right set of skills and equipment but the repair bill will be astronomical because it takes tons of time. I don’t know anyone offering this service.

or do i/can i replace the motherboard with a better graphics card for gaming?

If you can find a new motherboard with better card than yes, you can replace. The problem is that most laptops don’t have wide variety of motherboards available. In most cases there is only one motherboard suitable for one particular laptop model.

i just got a new laptop harddrive as my old one was failing and i backed up all of my info and changed drives and restored my new hard drive. now for some reason im barely getting wifi ususally i have 5 bars now i have one maybe 2 any help??????

  27. Jeremy Morris

I want to thank you sooooo much for this. It literally took me 2 minutes to replace my keyboard because of you. If I had decided to not look it up I would have had the whole thing taken apart for no reason.

Looking into getting a ssd for mine and moving the existing hdd to the optical bay… Does anyone know if it supports sata2/3?

I recently upgraded my aspire 7551 from the basic 3GB RAM to 8GB RAM, but it only let’s me use about 3.8 GB RAM (Physical memory). I read somewhere that it depends of the motherboard and/or the OS (W7 Home Premium 64bit. But in another site, they said I could upgrade it to 8 GB RAM with no problem.

Got any idea as to why it only lets me use about half?

    Thank you for your time

I don’t think this is motherboard limitations.
Your Acer Aspire 7551 laptop can support up to 8GB RAM.
Most likely it happens because you have a 32-bit OS installed. In order to see all 8GB RAM you’ll have to install a 64-bit OS.
      1. Search torrents for Windows 7 OEM 64-bit disc. Download it.
      2. Install Windows 7 Home Premium. Activate using the license key from the laptop.

  30. Stephan

Thank you for the rely, just checked and I have the 64bit version, so I’m really confused at why I can’t use all of the RAM.

    • IML Tech

      @ Stephan,

Thank you for the rely, just checked and I have the 64bit version, so I’m really confused at why I can’t use all of the RAM.

You have two 4GB RAM modules installed, correct? Most likely one of the modules not installed correctly. Try reseating both memory modules.

  31. Stephan

Thank you again for the reply, but it still doesn’t work. It says I have 8GB RAM installed but only 3,87GB are usable. I’m really confused.

    Thanks for the help though.

Thank you again for the reply, but it still doesn’t work. It says I have 8GB RAM installed but only 3,87GB are usable. I’m really confused.

Check the Acer website for available downloads. Maybe you’ll have to update the BIOS to the latest version.
Also, try this. Enter the BIOS and load default settings. Save, exit and test again.
What is your laptop full model number? It should be printed somewhere on the bottom. Acer Aspire 7551-????

  32. Stephan

I just downloaded the latest BIOS, but it’s kind of late for me, so I’ll try it out tomorrow morning. My model is Aspire 7551-P323G32Mnkk.

    thanks

    • IML Tech

      @ Stephan,
Try latest BIOS update. According to this page your laptop Acer Aspire 7551-P323G32Mnkkcan support 8GB RAM.

  33. Stephan

Thanks, I updated, restarted, shut down, removed RAM put it in again and all’s perfect now 🙂 it says I have 8GB (7,75GB usable) I suppose that’s good?

Thanks for all the help 🙂

    Hi IML Tech,

My Acer Aspire 7551 keeps freezen up in de Phoenix Bios v1.18 lately.
The only change I made in the hardware is a new HDD Crucial M4 128Gb, but it ran for some months now without any freezing up. Normally you would reset the bios, but how can I do that with this laptop? Or do I need to change the bios battery? And what battery type does it need?

  38. mike

I have Acer Aspire 7551-7422,knocked it over with headphone plug plugged in-bad connection.
    How hard to repair?

  39. Kristy

I have a 7551 and my touch pad no longer works. I need to install another one but I need to know how to get it out. Please let me know

  40. Christina

I am trying now to reassemble my Acer Aspire 7551 and am working backwards through the steps, but at Step 13 I am having trouble

Connecting the following cables from left to right:
    – power button cable.
    – touchpad cable.

It looks like these two cables won’t slide all the way back in… Or is that normal? I didn’t take a picture of what they looked like before I removed them 24+ hrs ago, so I can’t remember, but they seem to be loose & not fully connected. There doesn’t seem to be a way to pull up on any locking tab (like for the keyboard cable)… Please advise

Hello i`ve the same acer , i`m so happy with him ,i want to change only my hard disk with better one ,can you explain what do you mean with ( mounting caddy to the new drive.) i don`t undarstand what is caddy ? Thanks for your help

    • IML Tech

      @ Rado,

i want to change only my hard disk with better one ,can you explain what do you mean with ( mounting caddy to the new drive.) i don`t undarstand what is caddy ?

It’s must the mounting bracket. All you have to do is remove two screws on one side of the hard drive bracket and two more screws on the other side. After that you can separate the mounting bracket from the old hard drive and install it on the new hard drive. That’s it.

    Hello!
I’m planning on upgrading my acer 7551 with Samsung Basic SSD 120GB SATA3 MZ-7TD120BW (840 Series, SATA 6Gb/s). I was planning on putting the existing 500GB hard drive to optical bay (instead od DVD). Can you tell me is this possible (as I saw someone wrote about it but, there wasn’t any reply)?

  43. Psynn

    Hello,
I was wondering if its possible to up the ram on this perticular model Acer? I’m currently running only 4GB (3.75GB usable) worth of ram and was wondering how much more I can possibly add? Thanks!

  44. Japio

You missed the 5 tiny screws in the battery compartment, to loosen the top edge, in step 12.
Other than that it was very helpfull for opening it up.
The laptop stopped suddenly and won’t power up any more. No lights, nothing.

I discovered a burned part on the MB partnumber U76, next to connecter MINI2. Anybody knows what that is?
Is it possible to replace it?
Or otherwise, how much is MB?

    Best regards,
    Jaap

  45. Tarik

    To Psynn:
You can upgrade the laptop to a maximun of 8go1333mhz fo ram (2 x 4go) My brother has one if works with 8go of ram but you should know that you need a 64bits os to fully use those 8go, 32 bits os will use only 3 go maximum.

  46. Ray

I might buy a bluetooth module from ebay but does anyone know where the connector for bluetooth is on the motherboard? (if there is any)

    • IML Tech

      @ Ray,

I might buy a bluetooth module from ebay but does anyone know where the connector for bluetooth is on the motherboard?

I could be wrong but here’s my guess.
Take a look at the step 17. There is an arrow pointing to the USB board cable on the bottom of the pictures. Right under the arrow there is an unused connector.
This could be the Bluetooth connector.

  47. Keith W

Hello, I am in need of help! Recently (within 2 months,) my laptop, the Acer Aspire 7551g, has been unable to load past the pulsing Windows logo when when it is turned on. I made the terrible mistake of hitting the laptop somewhere between the “Alt Car” button and the lower right corner “Enter” button. I’m hoping that it is an easy fix for cheap, and nothing along the lines of a cracked motherboard or a broken CPU. As I couldn’t find a map of the layout of the inside of the laptop, I cannot figure out the possibilities of what has been hit on my own. Might you be able to help, and tell me what could be done to solve the problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Keith.

  48. Ray

    @ IML Tech,
Thanks, I think that’s it, it’s a four pin connector so that should be it. Now just looking for the empty space in de base to place the module itself.

Does anyone have info on the mini pci-e/msata slots on a 7551g-7606?

I currently have a BT module mounted where the 2nd pci-e (or msata, idk) slot is, but would like to mount that somewhere else, or get a mini pci-e bt/wifi combo module, and either put a msata ssd in the 2nd slot, a usb 3.0 pci-e card and mod a few usb 3.0 where the usb 2.0 slots are currently at, or get an esata mini-pci-e card and HW mod an esata port into the side of the laptop.

USB 2.0 is way to slow, and i want to keep my 2.5″ 128gb ssd, and 2.5″ 7200k 500gb drive, while adding another option for a fast hdd/ssd interconnect.

Be it internally on the unused pci-e slot, if its a msata or msata compatible, or externally by hardware modding in a usb 3.0 port or esata port and using a mini pci-e sata/usb 3.0 controller to attach an external drive.

Anyone have information regarding the m-pcie slots on the board, and if you can upgrade the wifi module to a faster one, or a wifi/bt combo card, as well as the nature of the unused m-pci-e slot, and if you could put a usb3.0/esata/sata controller board or any msata/m-pci-e board there?

    Thanks-

I opened up my laptop and put it back together. Now, the screen won’t work and neither will the hdmi port? What are the chances I broke something or how can I fix it?

      @ cheeze,

Check memory modules. It’s possible one of the modules not seated properly and there is no video (internal or external) because of that.

    @IML Tech

Thank you, it was the RAM not being seated correctly!

Hi. I took my laptop apart with your guide and it worked well to fix my dc jack. The only thing thats wrong now is that my cd drive wont fit back in. There isnt a screw in the hole, it goes all the way in and just doesnt fit the last 10% and click into place. Any suggestions? I have no idea what else to try.

    Hey !
I have this laptop and when I start the computer , the ventilator starts working and lights go on but the screen remains black . I tried connecting it to another TV with a HDMI but the TV didn’t get anything too.

    What could be the problem?
    Thanks in advance !

      @ David,
This could be RAM failure. Try removing RAM modules one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately.
It’s possible one of them will work. If that’s the case, replace the failed module.

I have 7551-7422 , unit left on by wife when found next morning the blue lights stay on no power to monitor. Turned off power button restarted, blue lights came back on and cooling fan started for one second went off and screen still black. Blue lights stay on still. Removed both memory and placed one at time in nothing firedup, reversed memory and still nothing. Connected to separate monitor and nothing yet. I assumed the video chip is out but figure need new motherboard. Would this be a good guess?
Thank you in advance. (great site)

I followed your guide so I could replace the DC jack.
Ordered a new one a got it installed.
But now that I have plugged it in, I don’t get any lights.
I know the battery is completely dead. Would that cause an issue?
I thought at least the indicator light for electric would come on even if the battery is dead.
Any ideas what I could check? I went over everything twice now so I’m sure it’s something I just overlooked.

My fan needs to be replaced – I bought a new one that was supposed to be for 7551-7422 but all I have is the fan part – not the whole cooling module. Also the one that’s in place appears to have a metal strap attached (it runs across to the heat sink, from the look of it) that the new fan just doesn’t have, . It doesn’t look there’s a way to separate the old fan from the cooling module to put the new one in. Am I looking at replacing the whole cooling module? I’m guessing the new fan is not the right one.

About a year ago, I started having issues with my laptop’s power. The power harness seemed to be very loose, and I had to delicately move the AC adapter around — sometimes I could get it charge but only for a few seconds. After a while, it seemed like I just couldn’t get the wire the seat perfectly and the battery died. I had talked to someone about the issue, and they said a loose harness would require a solder-job and an expensive repair, so I kind of forgot about the laptop. Fast forward a year or so, and I noticed the old laptop lying around. I did a search and found this website, where I found out it’s not soldered at all. So, I opened up the laptop and replaced the old power harness with a new one. I reattached everything and plugged the laptop in. There appeared to be no power to the motherboard. I replaced the CMOS battery and got much of the same, no LEDs lit or anything like that on the mobo. So, we have a new power harness, a new CMOS battery, a working ac adapter (used on another laptop), and I’m still seeing no power to the mobo. Could I have a short? Some issue with the motherboard? Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is it possible to remove the DVD drive and add a second hard drive instead?

Is it possible to remove the keyboard to get to the DC Jack and not have to take all the parts off the bottom as you outline in the first 4 steps

On my 7551g, the top cover was screwed down with tiny screws to the plastic bottom. Excellent guide. Thank you very much.
