I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 which suffered a black screen problem about 1-2 seconds after start up. I could just about make out the images on the screen by using a strong light source and tried all sorts to remedy it. After carrying out a system restore and turning the laptop on and off lots of times it came back on ok. Next day same problem – again remedied the same way, that was yesterday – I haven’t switched it off since and am using it now with no problems. I suspect this intermittent problem may be due to a faulty inverter. Any thoughts please?
I think you are correct and most likely this intermittent problem occurs due to a faulty screen inverter. BUT before you buy a new one try reseating cables on both ends of the inverter, it might be just a loose connection problem. This disassembly guide might be useful.
1. Open up the display assembly
2. Unplug cables from the inverter board
3. Apply contact cleaner on both connections(if you have it)
4. Plug cables back and test the laptop
If you still experience the same problem with the screen and it turns black, try replacing the inverter. You can find a new screen inverter here. I just searched for “Inspiron 1200 inverter” and found one for USD 15, I think it’s a good price.
