If your Dell Latitude D820 laptop runs very hot and noisy, most likely it’s time to clean or even replace the cooling fan. Thanks to Bite my bytes for the picture and some instructions.
The cooling fan in this model is buried deep inside the laptop so be ready to take the whole thing apart. This is not for beginners.
Here are a few typical cooling module related problems:
1. The laptop fan runs louder than before, it comes on more often. If that’s the case, most likely you can clean the cooling fan and heat sink without taking the whole thing apart. You can get a limited access to the cooling fan if you remove the keyboard. Spray canned air inside the fan until all dust is gone.
2. The laptop runs very hot and shuts down on its own. The fan is loud and works most of the time. If that’s the case, most likely the heat sink is clogged with dust as it shown on the picture above. You’ll have to disassemble the laptop and remove the dust buildup.
3. When the cooling fan starts, it makes grinding noise. If that’s the case, most likely the fan is bad and has to be replaced. You can purchase a new fan here for less than $20. Again, you’ll have to disassemble the laptop.
You’ll find step-by-step disassembly instructions in the Service Manual for Dell Latitude D820 laptops (not in the user’s manual as it was mentioned on Bite my bytes).
While inside the laptop, you can replace thermal compound between the heat sink and processor.

Thanks for the headsup. It’s funny that the dust buildup didn’t occur to me as the cause, it doesn’t take much of a dust bunny to clog the grill, and all gear are dust bunny magnets.
I didn’t have a can of compressed air but I DID have a dyson vacuum (with very strong suction)
I’m sure that there is static electricity dangers by doing this approach, so beware!
Without disassembling the laptop I 1) placed it perfectly flat against the fan cover and heard the fan spin up …incredibly fast, this centrifugal motion I’m sure tossed off anything on the blades and probably got some on the walls as well. 2) I coverd part of the vacuum intake up and placed it over the side grill till I heard some resistance.
Restarted, so far no issues. Prior it was on strong and off again ever few seconds. VERY annoying.
Great site!

Excellent tutorial and well explained
I have come to this page
looking for a solution for my Dell Latitude D820 laptop that a couple of days, he stopped by completo.Ultimamente noticed that the area under the fan to overheat, so that if you had reached on his legs that left quemar.Despues I have started working to find solutions on google to rule on where I can be ruled averia.Ya
memory modules, hard disk, food
so I think that the problem is that has stopped working and so the fan does not stop and start the laptop or as a last problem that has been damaged
Motherboard
I followed your tutorial to the letter and effectively in the heatsink fan was stuck with a sort of fluff and not very well let in aire.He proceeded to clean and reinstall all components on their sites, but laptop still can not boot.
I figured it could be that system would have some protection against the temperature if the fan was not working, correct me if I’m wrong, did not fail to boot the laptop but I echo tests to remove the fan and try to boot the laptop but does not.
If you press the power switch are set to three LEDs light up while holding down the switch.
I read the error codes dell flash on their website but does none of them but if I press the flashing interrptor stay and if suleto LEDs turn off.

So discarding the rest before I can only said that the motherboard has broken.
If you would think that is what might have happened or bearings in a correct solution esterna I would be grateful.
If it is not possible, I have come to a large web

Thanks for the tips! Gave me the courage to successfully disassemble and clean my laptop. Net result is a 11C cooler GPU — no more slow downs/lock ups.
