In this post I explain how to remove and replace damaged LCD screen in a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. Most likely this guide will work for many other Dell laptops. If this guide works for you, please mention the laptop model number in comments after the post.

Dell Inspiron 6000 display disassembly.

STEP 1.

Remove six screw covers from the screen bezel.

Remove all screws found under those covers.

You can remove the screw cover with a sharp object or small screwdriver.

STEP 2.

Start separating the screen bezel from the display cover.

Remove the screen bezel.

STEP 3.

Remove four screws from the right side of the LCD screen assembly.

Remove four more screws from the left side.

STEP 4.

Separate the LCD screen assembly from the display cover.

STEP 5.

Place the LCD screen assembly face down on the keyboard.

Now you can access the video cable.

STEP 6.

Unplug the small connector from the screen inverter board.

STEP 7.

Disconnect the video cable connector from the LCD screen.

STEP 8.

Remove the LCD screen assembly.

The inverter board is attached to the LCD screen frame.

STEP 9.

Remove one screw securing the inverter board.

STEP 10.

Disconnect the baklight lamp cable from the left side of the inverter board.

STEP 11.

Slide the inverter board to the right.

STEP 12.

Lift up the left side of the inverter board.

STEP 13.

Remove inverter board from the mounting bracket.

Now you can replace the inverter board with a new one if needed.

In this guide I explain how to remove and replace the LCD screen in a Dell Latitude D620 laptop.

The LCD screen removal steps will be very similar for many other Dell laptop. If this guide works for your laptop, please mention the model number in comments after the post.

STEP 1.

There are six screw seals on the LCD screen bezel. Remove all six seals and screws found under them.

You can remove the screw seal with a sharp object or small flat head screwdriver. The seal bottom is sticky. Glue all screw seals somewhere on the screen bezel so they don’t get lost.

STEP 2.

Start separating the screen bezel from display cover with your fingers.

STEP 3.

Remove the screen bezel.

STEP 4.

Remove six screws securing the LCD screen mounting brackets to the display cover.

STEP 5.

Separate the LCD screen assembly from the display cover and place face down on the keyboard.

STEP 6.

Now you can access the back side of the LCD screen and video cable.

The video cable has two connectors. One of them is connected to the inverter board and another one to the LCD screen.

STEP 7.

Disconnect the small connector from the inverter board.

STEP 8.

Disconnect another connector from the LCD screen.

STEP 9.

Remove the LCD screen assembly from the laptop.

STEP 10.

If you are replacing the LCD screen, you’ll have to transfer both mounting brackets to the new screen. Each bracket is secured by a few screws.

In Dell laptops the inverter board is attached to the bottom of the LCD screen.

Even though it looks like the inverter board is a part of the LCD screen, it’s possible to remove the inverter and replace it separately.

In one of the previous posts I explain how to remove and replace the keyboard in a Dell Latitude D620 laptop.

In this guide I explain how to remove and replace the broken LCD screen in a Gateway M7 series laptop. I’m fixing a Gateway M-6846 laptop. It also says Model No.: SA1 on the bottom. Most likely my guide will works for some other Gateway laptops. If it works for you, please mention the laptop model number in the comments below.

Turn off the laptop, unplug the power adapter and remove the battery.

STEP 1.

There are three hinge covers on the bottom of the display panel. We’ll have to remove these covers first.

Insert a sharp object under the hinge cover and lift it up. Continue removing the cover with your fingers.

The hinge cover has been removed.

Remove two other hinge covers.

STEP 2.

There are six screw covers on the screen bezel.

Remove screw covers with a sharp object.

Remove all six screws found under the covers.

STEP 3.

Start separating the screen bezel from the display cover.

Continue removing the screen bezel.

The screen bezel has been removed.

STEP 4.

The screen inverter board mounted below the LCD screen.

Remove one screw securing the inverter board.

Unplug the LCD screen backlight cable from the right side of the inverter board.

I’m not replacing the inverter board, so I’m not disconnecting the cable on the left side.

STEP 5.

Remove six screws securing the LCD screen hinges and mounting bracket.

Before you can separate the LCD screen assembly from the display cover, you’ll have to unplug cable from the webcam board.

Now you can separate the screen assembly from the display cover and access the video cable connection on the back of the screen.

Unplug video cable from the LCD screen connector.

STEP 6.

Remove two screws securing LCD screen to the mounting  bracket.

Remove two more screws on the other side of the screen.

Now you can remove the broken LCD screen and replace it with a new screen.

I found a new LCD screen for my Gateway M-6846 laptop here. If you have a different Gateway laptop, just search by the model number.

Today I explain how to remove and replace the broken display hinge in an Acer Extensa 4620z laptop. If this guide works for your Acer laptop and it’s not Extensa 4620z, please mention the model number in comments below.

In this particular laptop I’m replacing the right hinge.

Before you start, turn off the laptop and remove the battery.

STEP 1.

Insert a small flat head screwdriver under the hinge cover and lift it up. The hinge cover is a part of the keyboard cover.

STEP 2.

Remove the keyboard cover.

When the keyboard/hinge cover is removed you can see that the right display hinge is broken. The bottom part of the broken hinge is still connected to the base assembly and the top part is mounted to the display.

STEP 3.

Remove screws securing display hinges to the bottom of the laptop. If you are replacing only one hinge, remove only one screw.

STEP 4.

There are six screws securing the screen bezel. All six screws are hidden under rubber covers.

You can remove screw covers with a sharp object. Glue screw covers somewhere on the screen bezel so you don’t lose them.

STEP 5.

Start separating the screen bezel from cover with your fingers.

STEP 6.

Continue separating the screen bezel and finally remove it from the laptop.

STEP 7.

While removing the screen bezel, I dislocated the display latch assembly. If you did so, put it back in place.

STEP 8.

Remove three screws securing the broken display hinge.

STEP 9.

Remove the bottom part of the broken hinge.

STEP 10.

Remove the top part of the broken hinge.

STEP 11.

Install a new hinge into the display and secure it with screws.

The broken display hinge has been replaced. You can use same steps to remove and replace the left hinge if needed.

Assemble the laptop back together.

Also, you can use this guide for removing and repolacing laptop screen and inverter board.

In the following guide I explain how to remove and replace damaged LCD screen in HP G50/G60/G70 notebooks. I’m installing a new LCD screen into a HP G50 notebook but all disassembly steps should be almost the same or at least very similar for HP G60 and G70.

By the way, HP G50/G60/G70 notebooks also known as Compaq Presario CQ50, Presario CQ60 and Presario CQ70.

In most notebooks you can replace the LCD screen without separating the display panel from the base but not in HP G50/G60/G70. In order to replace LCD screen in these models we’ll have to remove the keyboard, keyboard cover and display panel. Let’s start replacing the screen.

STEP 1.

Turn off the laptop and remove the battery.
Remove one screw securing the Wi-Fi cover and remove the cover.
It is not necessary to remove the memory and hard drive covers. I marked them just for your convenience.

STEP 2.

Remove three (yellow) screws securing the keyboard.
Remove four (red) screws securing the keyboard cover.

If you are using this guide for replacing the keyboard, you have to remove only three (yellow) screws.

In G50 and G60 the keyboard screws are located in the battery compartment.
In G70 notebooks there are only two screws securing the keyboard and they are located on the bottom (there is a small keyboard stamped close to each screw).

STEP 3.

Carefully lift up the keyboard from the base.

STEP 4.

Place the keyboard so you can access the cable connector underneath.

You have to unlock the connector and release the cable before removing the keyboard.
Move the white clip about 2-3 millimeters towards the display panel and release the cable. Now you can remove the keyboard.

WARNING! The white clip must stay attached to the connector base. If you accidentally break the connector, you’ll have to replace the motherboard. If you work slowly, everything should be fine.

On the picture below the keyboard connector is shown in the unlocked state.

STEP 5.

Disconnect the switch board cable from the motherboard.

STEP 6.

Remove the keyboard cover.

STEP 7.

Turn the laptop upside down and disconnect two antenna cables from the wireless card.
Each antenna cable has a golden head. Grab the head with your fingers and lift it up.

STEP 8.

Disconnect the video cable connector from the motherboard.
Disconnect the webcam cable from the motherboard.
Pull two Wi-Fi antenna cables through the opening.

STEP 9.

Remove four screws securing the display panel hinges.

STEP 10.

Lift up and separate the display panel from the laptop base.

In the following steps we will disassemble the display panel and remove the LCD screen.

STEP 11.

There are two screw seals located in the lower left and right corners.

Remove these seals with a sharp object and remove screws found under the seals.

STEP 12.

Start separating the screen bezel from the display cover.

Continue separating the bezel.

The screen bezel has been removed.

STEP 13.

The screen inverter board is mounted below the screen. The inverter is locked between plastic brackets.

You can remove and replace the inverter board without removing the LCD screen. Simply pull the inverter board from the cover and disconnect connectors on both ends.

STEP 14.

Remove two screws securing the right display hinge.

Remove the right hinge.

STEP 15.

Remove two screws securing the left display hinge.

Remove the left hinge.

STEP 16.

Remove the inverter board from the cover and disconnect one connector from the right side. By the way, this is the backlight lamp connector.

STEP 17.

Remove two screws securing the LCD screen on the top.

STEP 18.

Now you can separate the LCD screen from the display cover and access the video cable.

My HP G50 notebook didn’t have the webcam installed and the webcam cable was taped to the display cover.
If you have a HP G60/G70 notebook, most likely it came with the webcam. You’ll have to disconnect the cable from the webcam before disconnecting the video cable.

STEP 19.

Remove sticky tape securing the video cable connector and unplug cable from the LCD screen.

STEP 20.

Now you can remove the LCD screen from the cover.

If you are replacing the screen, you’ll have to transfer the left and right mounting brackets to the new screen.
Remove three screws securing the bracket and remove the bracket. Do the same with the other side.

The LCD screen model number is located on the sticker. In my laptop I had a screen with the following model number: B154EW08 v.1

The best way to find a new LCD screen for your laptop is either searching by the  LCD model number (shown in the picture above) or using the HP part number.

The HP part numbers for LCD screen and other parts can be found in service manuals and here they are.

Service manual for HP G50 or Compaq Presario CQ50 (page 57).
Service manual for HP G60 or Compaq Presario CQ60 (page 4-23).
Service manual for HP G70 or Compaq Presario CQ70 (page 4-20).

After you find the spare part number for LCD screen or any other part, you can search for a new replacement part here. You’ll find many cheap LCD screen replacements.

Today I will be removing and replacing the LCD screen in an IBM ThinkPad T43p laptop. You can use same set of instructions for ThinkPad T43 and some other IBM (now Lenovo) laptops.

Failure description: the laptop starts with a reddish screen (white color appear to be pink). After a minute or two the backlight goes completely off but you still can see a very faint image on the screen if you look very closely. When you restart the laptop, the screen lights up again but a minute later the light goes off.

Solution: the laptop has a failing backlight lamp which is a part of the LCD screen. The whole screen has to be replaced.

You can try replacing just the backlight lamp without replacing the screen, but it’s not easy and should be done only by an experienced technician.

Let’s disassemble the display panel and remove the LCD screen.

STEP 1.

Carefully remove four screw seals from the bottom part of the display bezel.

You can remove them with a sharp object.

Remove all four screws found under the seals.

STEP 2.

Remove three screws (found under seals) from the left side of the display panel.

STEP 3.

Remove four screws (found under seals) from the right side of the display panel.

STEP 4.

The display bezel is glued to the LCD screen with sticky tape. You can separate the bezel using a guitar pick (as I do) or another piece of plastic.
Insert the guitar pick between the display bezel and screen and carefully move it along the side until the bezel is separated.

STEP 5.

Continue removing the display bezel with your fingers.

STEP 6.

The screen inverter is mounted under the bezel and can be replaced without removing the bezel completely. I’ll remove the display bezel because I have to replace the LCD screen.

STEP 7.

The display bezel has been removed.

STEP 8.

In order to confirm the backlight lamp failure I did the following experiment.
I unpluged the LCD screen from the right side of the inveter board and pluged in an known good backlight lamp. After that I turned on the laptop and tested it with my backlight lamp for about 10 minutes. My backlight lamp didn’t turn off and worked fine all time. That means the backlight lamp inside the screen is bad.

If your laptop doesn’t work with a known good backlight lamp, most likely you have a problem with the inverter board.

STEP 9.

Unplug the inverter board from the video cable.
Remove the inverter board.

Do you need a new inverter board? Find a new inverter here.

STEP 10.

Carefully separate the LCD screen from the display cover. Do not forget to release the cable with night lamp. Simply pull the cable from the display cover.

STEP 11.

Now you can access the back side of the LCD screen and unplug the screen cable.

Remove sticky tape securing the connection and pull the cable connector from the LCD screen.

STEP 12.

Remove the LCD screen from the laptop.

The LCD screen has been removed.

Be careful with this piece of plastic. Try not to remove it from the display because it will take some time to figure out how to connect it back together.
I believe this piece of plastic is designed to prevent the screen cable from breaking when you close the display.

STEP 13.

Remove two screws securing the display mounting brackets.
Remove the bracket and move it to a new LCD screen.
Do the same with the bracket on the other side of the screen.

You can find a new LCD screen using two different part numbers from the back side of the defective screen:
1. The model number of the LCD screen. In my laptop it is N150U3-L01
2. FRU part number. In my laptop it is 92P6753.

In this post I explain how to remove screen inverter and replace LCD screen in a Compaq Presario m2000 laptop. It’s way easier to disassemble the laptop display panel when the display panel is separated from the laptop. You’ll find instructions for removing the display panel in my previous guide for Compaq Presario m2000 laptops, just follow steps 1,2,3,9,10. This guide might work for some other Compaq Presario laptops. If it works for you, please mention the laptop model in the comments below.

It is possible to remove the inverter and LCD screen while the display is still attached to the laptop but it will be harder to remove the screen bezel.

If the backlight in your laptop stopped working and the image on the screen is so dim that you can barely see it under bright light, most likely you have a failed inverter board. There is a good chance to fix the problem if you replace the inverter board.
If you replace the inverter board but the image is still dim, most likely there is a problem with the backlight lamp inside the LCD screen. If that’s the case, try replacing the LCD screen.

Before you start make sure the laptop is turned off and the battery is removed.

STEP 1.

There are six screws securing the screen bezel to the display cover. These screws are hidden under six rubber seals. You’ll have to remove these seals first.

Remove screw seals with a sharp object. These seals have a sticky bottom. You can glue them somewhere on the bezel so they don’t get lost.

STEP 2.

Insert your fingers between the LCD screen and bezel and start separating bezel from the cover.

Continue separating the screen bezel.

It might take some time to release the bezel from hinge covers. It will be even harder if the display is still attached to the laptop.

Finally, the screen bezel has been removed.

STEP 3.

The screen inverter is mounted below the LCD screen. There are no screws securing the inverter.

Remove the ivnerter board from the display assembly and disconnect cables on both ends of the inverter.

Now you can replace the inverter board with a new one if needed.

STEP 4.

Let’s proceed to the LCD screen removal.

There are two screws securing the LCD screen to the mounting brackets. Remove two screws from each side.

Separate the LCD screen from the display cover.

Now you can access the back side of the LCD screen and disconnect the video cable.

Remove sticky tape securing the connection and uplug the video cable from the LCD screen connector.

Now you can remove the LCD screen and replace it with a new one if needed.

The best way to find a new replacement screen is searching by the LCD part number. In my laptop the part number is LP150X08 (A5)(N1).

In this guide I will be taking apart a Compaq Presario M2000 notebook. The guide should work for all other notebooks in the Presario M2000 line. If it works for you, please mention the notebook model in the comments below. In my case I’m taking apart a Compaq Presario M2005US.

TAKING APART NOTEBOOK

First of all, turn off the notebook, unplug the power adapter and remove the battery.

The following 8 steps explain how to remove the keyboard.

STEP 1.

Remove two screws in the battery compartment. These screws securing the keyboard bezel.

STEP 2.

Lift up one side of the keyboard bezel with a small flat head screwdriver. Continue removing the bezel with your fingers.

STEP 3.

The keyboard bezel has been removed.

STEP 4.

Remove four screws securing the keyboard.

STEP 5.

Lift up the keyboard. Be careful because the keyboard is still connected to the motherboard.

STEP 6.

Place the keyboard so you can access the cable connector.

STEP 7.

Carefully unlock the connector by moving the white part of the connector towards the hinges.
WARNING! If you accidentally break the connector, you will have to replace the whole motherboard or use the notebook with an external keyboard.

STEP 8.

Now you can release the cable and remove the keyboard.

You will find the keyboard part number on the back side of the keyboard. In my laptop the part number is 367777-001. Do you need a new keyboard for Presario M2000 notebook? Find a new inexpensive keyboard here.

In the following 2 steps I will remove the notebook LCD panel.

STEP 9.

Remove six screws securing the display hinges (three screws per hinge).
Disconnect the LCD cable (video cable) from the motherboard.
If you laptop came with Wi-Fi card, you’ll have to disconnect Wi-Fi antenna cables from the wireless card and unroute the cables. My laptop came without wireless card and because of that there are no Wi-Fi antenna cables running from the display panel.

By the way, you’ll find the display panel part number on a sticker above the LCD cable connector. In my case the part number is 381066-001. This is part number for the whole display panel assembly including the LCD screen, video cable, hinges, plastic cover and bezel.

Some sellers use this part number just for the LCD screen. Make sure you know what you are buying, the whole display panel or just the LCD screen. Ask the seller.

STEP 10.

Remove the display panel assembly. Here you can buy a new LCD screen or entire display panel for Presario M2000.

In the next guide I explain how to disassemble the display panel so you can remove the inverter board and LCD screen.

STEP 11.

Remove two screws securing the button board.
Disconnect the white ribbon cable from the button board.

STEP 12.

Remove the button board. You can find a new button board using this part number: DACT2BPI6B2.

STEP 13.

Remove the RAM, HDD and Wi-Fi card covers from the bottom of the notebook.

STEP 14.

Pull the hard drive up and remove it from the notebook.

STEP 15.

Remove both memory RAM modules.

STEP 16.

Remove one screws securing the CD/DVD drive and pull the drive from the notebook.
If you are just replacing the drive, you don’t have to go though all previous disassembly steps.

STEP 17.

Remove all screws from the bottom of the notebook.

STEP 18.

Remove all screws securing the top cover.
Disconnect the touch pad cable from the motherboard.

STEP 19.

Turn the notebook upside down and carefully lift up the base cover.

STEP 20.

Remove the base cover.

STEP 21.

Now you can access the cooling fan.
In order to remove the fan you’ll have to remove two screws and unplug the fan cable from the motherboard.

STEP 22.

Remove the cooling fan and replace it with a new one if needed.

STEP 23.

Unplug the speaker assembly cable from the motherboard and remove the speaker assembly.

STEP 24.

The battery is connected to the motherboard via a battery board.
Remove two screws securing the battery board and disconnect it from the motherboard.

STEP 25.

In a Presario M2000 notebook the power connector (power jack) is located on a separate power connector board. You can remove and replace the power connector board without removing the motherboard.

Remove two screws securing the power connector board and unplug it from the motherboard.

The power connector board is removed.

Using the part number DA0CT2PB6D8 you can find a new power connector board here.

In a case of power connector (power jack) failure either resolder/replace the power jack or replace the whole power connector board.

STEP 26.

Remove four screws securing the motherboard.

STEP 27.

Carefully lift up the motherboard on one side.

STEP 28.

Remove the motherboard.

The processor (CPU) is located under the heat sink.

In this guide I’ll be removing the LCD screen and inverter board from a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. You can use same set of instructions for a Dell Inspiron E1705 and probably some other Dell laptops. If my guide works for you, please mention the laptop model in the comments below.

Like in most other laptops, in this model the LCD screen is mounted between the display cover and front bezel. You’ll find eight screw seals on the front bezel. Six rubber seals (red circles) and two plastic seals (green circles).

Remove rubber seals using a sharp object. Glue these seals somewhere on the front bezel so they don’t get lost.

Remove two plastic seals using the same tool. Also, glue them somewhere on the front bezel.

Remove all eight screws found under the seals.

When all screws are removed you can start separating the front bezel from the display cover.  Use your fingers and a piece of soft plastic. In this guide I’m using a guitar pick.

Continue separating the front bezel.

The front bezel has been removed.

There are screws securing the LCD screen to the hinge bracket. You’ll find four screws on each side.

Remove four screw on one side of the display panel.

And after that remove four screws on the other side of the panel.

Now you can separate the LCD screen assembly from the cover.

Be careful, there is a video cable connecting the LCD screen and inverter board to the motherboard.
Place the LCD screen on the palm rest so you can access the video cable and unplug it from the LCD screen and inverter.

Press on latches on both sides of the video cable connector and pull it from the LCD screen.

Unplug the other end of the video cable from the inverter board.

Now you can remove the LCD screen and inverter board. As you see, the inverter board is attached to the LCD screen frame. It’s very common setup for Dell laptops.

The inverter board is mounted inside the metal casing which is a part of the LCD screen frame.
Remove one screw securing the inverter board and turn the LCD screen upside down.

Unplug the backlight cable from the inverter board.

Carefully remove the inverter board from the metal casing and replace it with a new one if needed. You can buy a new inverter board here for about $15-20.
When you buy a new LCD screen for your Dell laptop, it might come with the inverter board already attached to it. It’s very common. If that’s the case, you don’t have to remove the old inverter.

Before you start do not forget to turn off the laptop, unplug the AC power adapter and remove the battery.

STEP 1.

On the screen bezel you’ll find six screw seals. Four rubber seals and two plastic seals.

You can remove these seals with a sharp object.
Remove all six screws found under the seals.

STEP 2.

Start separating the screen bezel from the display cover with your fingers. You can use a piece of soft plastic to separate the bezel.

Continue separating the screen bezel on the top of the display and after that move to the lower part.

Finally, remove the screen bezel.

STEP 3.

Remove four screws securing the LCD screen to the left mounting bracket.

STEP 4.

Remove four screws securing the LCD screen to the right mounting bracket.

STEP 5.

Remove two screws securing the web camera.

STEP 6.

Separate the LCD screen assembly from the display cover. As you see, the web camera is still attached to the screen assembly.

STEP 7.

Plase the LCD screen assembly upside down on the palm rest.
The green ribbon cable is the video cable and it has two connectors. One of the is connected to the LCD screen and another one to the inverter board.

Carefully push on two latches on both sides of the LCD connector, release the cable and disconnect it from the LCD screen.

Pull the second connector up and disconnect it from the inverter board.

STEP 8.

Remove the screen assembly (LCD screen and inverter board).

The inverter board is attached to the bottom part of the LCD screen. The inverter board can be replaced separately.

The best way to find a new replacement screen is searching by the LCD screen model number or Dell part number. Both numbers can be found on one sticker with a barcode.
