Well like everybody else who has purchased a HP DV9000 laptop, my left hinge has cracked and in doing so, also broke the embedded locknuts in the top LCD cover. I have had this HP DV 9000 for under a year but refuse to send it back for service. I haven’t tried to contact HP after reading all the hell stories everybody else have had in doing so… So being creative and having all the tools, I decided to give it a shot to fix it myself after looking for parts and seeing a $200+ price tag. My laptop now closes like new and the monitor turns off when in closed position.

This guide explains how to remove the display assembly from a Dell XPS M1530 laptop.

Question: Is it necessary to remove the whole display assembly from the laptop if I want to replace the LCD screen?
Answer: No, it’s not necessary. You can replace the LCD screen while the display assembly is still attached to the laptop.

In order to replace the LCD screen you’ll have to:
1. Remove the display bezel.
2. Remove all screws securing the LCD screen to the display cover.
3. Removed display hinges.
3. Disconnect the video cable and remove the screen.

These instructions explain how you can remove the LCD screen and replace the backlight bulb (aka CCFL tube) in a HP Pavilion zv5000 series laptops. Also, this disassembly guide should work for Pavilion zv6000 series.

Backlight bulb failure symptoms.

For about a month or so, my back light starts off as red on startup and slowly returns to normal (white). This can take as much as 30 seconds to a minute. Much recently, my backlight has been turning off randomly, but the frequency has been slowly increasing. As of yesterday – I noticed a high pitched hum sound just before the light kicked off. My light would come on instantly if I hit the screen position switch. And lastly, if I turned the brightness down, most of the symptoms disappears – except the back light had a red tinge to it.

Replacing and removing hinges is not a difficult task if you are careful and pay attention to details. I’m not sure if you can use the same hinges for both Latitude C640 and C540 but the following removal and replacement instructions should be the same for both models.

The display panel on your laptop feels wobbly? Apparently, the display hinges are loose and it’s time to tighten them up. On some laptops tightening up hinge screws is not difficult at all, let’s take for example instructions for this Asus A8j laptop.
In order to secure loose screws you’ll have to remove hinge covers and then remove the LCD bezel.

You first have to pry out the LCD bezel cover (this requires your fingernails a lot. Start from top and look at the whole LCD cover from the side. prying open from the outside seemed a lot easier than trying to open it from the inside like the guide told me to). Before that, you have to take the 6 rubber things off and unscrew the screws beneath those.

Your Dell laptop has broken hinges and you don’t want to spend a lot of money to repair an older computer? Not a problem. You can fix it yourself.
Here’s a great DIY guide for fixing a broken hinge on a Dell Latitude C600 laptop. This guide should work for many other Dell laptops too.

Well, one day my laptop fell down and the hinge + cover broke at the right side – a problem a lot of notebooks have as parts like the hinges, their covers and the TFT display often brake on notebooks.
Hinges for DELL notebooks are expensive – I followed some auctions on eBay and realized that I’d be too greedy to invest something like EUR 30,- ++ for a (2nd hand!!) hinge – a part which consists of poor aluminum and isn’t that big.
