Today I’ll be replacing broken (cracked) LCD screen on a Sony Vaio VPC-S111FM laptop.

This laptop also has another model number on the bottom: model PCG-51211L.

It’s possible the guide will fit some other Sony Vaio VPC-S series laptops. If the disassembly guide works for you, please mention the laptop model in comments below.

Before you start, make sure the laptop is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

There are four screws securing the screen bezel to the display cover. These screws are hidden under four rubber covers.

STEP 2.

Remove screw covers from the top side of the display bezel with a sharp object.

STEP 3.

Remove two more covers from the bottom part of the display.

STEP 4.

Start separating the screen bezel from the display cover with your fingers.

Carefully wiggle the bezel to disengage hidden plastic latches.

STEP 5.

Continue removing the bezel.

STEP 6.

Screen bezel removed.

STEP 7.

Remove four screws securing the LCD screen.

STEP 8.

Disconnect cable from the webcam module.

STEP 9.

Separate LCD screen from the display cover and place it on the keyboard.

STEP 10.

Now you can access the video cable.

STEP 11.

Remove clear tape securing the video cable connector.

Unplug video cable from the LCD screen.

STEP 12.

Remove damaged LCD screen.

Now you are ready to replace it with a new screen.

NOTE: When you search for a new replacement LCD screen, make sure it’s designed for Sony laptops.

I believe that not all LCD screens will work with Sony laptops even if the screen model number matches.

You’ll have to find a new screen which is COMPATIBLE with Sony laptops. I would suggest you contact the seller and confirm that.

In my Sony Vaio VPC-S111FM the LCD screen had the following part number (model): CLAA133WA01A.

In this guide I explain how to disassemble a Sony Vaio VGN-NR series laptop.

I’ll be taking apart a Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E laptop but I believe you can use same instructions for all other models in VGN-NR line. If this guide works for your laptop please mention the full model number in comments after the post.

The main goal of my repair is removing and replacing the failed hard drive which is mounted inside the laptop case. While accessing the hard drive, I’ll explain how to remove some other main laptop parts.

Before you start, make sure the laptop is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

Both memory modules can be accessed on the bottom of the laptop.

Remove one screw securing the memory cover. Remove the cover.

STEP 2.

Release both memory modules and pull them from slots.

STEP 3.

Remove three screws securing the DVD drive.

Pull DVD drive from the laptop and remove it.

STEP 4.

Remove one screw securing the keyboard.

STEP 5.

There are four spring loaded latches securing the keyboard to the top cover.

I pointed to latch locations with four arrows.

STEP 6.

In order to remove the keyboard you’ll have to release all four latches.

Push on the latch with a sharp object. The keyboard will lift up a little bit and will not allow the latch to lock again.

Release all four latches.

STEP 7.

Now you should be able to lift up the keyboard and turn it over on the palm rest.

Be careful, the keyboard still attached to the motherboard.

STEP 8.

When the keyboard turned over, you can access the cable connector.

Before you remove the keyboard, the cable connector has to be unlocked and cable released.

STEP 9.

On the following picture the keyboard cable connector shown in the locked position.

In order to unlock the connector you’ll have to move the brown part about 2 millimeters to the direction shown by two arrows. The brown tab must stat attached to the white base. Do not move it too far. Do not separate it from the connector base.

STEP 10.

On the following picture the connector is shown in the unlocked position. As you see, the brown tab still attached to the base but the cable is released now.

Pull keyboard cable from the connector.

STEP 11.

Now you can remove the keyboard.

If you need a new keyboard, you can find it here.

STEP 12.

Remove all screws from the bottom of the laptop. These screws securing the bottom cover to the top cover.

STEP 13.

Lift up and remove the bottom cover.

STEP 14.

When the bottom cover removed you can access the cooling fan, wireless card, processor and hard drive.

As I mentioned before, my goal is replacing the hard drive.

NOTE: In order to remove the cooling fan, you’ll have to remove the heat sink. Shouldn’t be very difficult.

You can find a new replacement fan here.

STEP 15.

Remove one screw securing the USB board. Lift up the USB board and put it aside.

STEP 16.

Remove one screw securing the hard drive assembly.

Slide the hard drive assembly to the right to disconnect it from the motherboard.

STEP 17.

Lift up the hard drive assembly.

Now separate the failed hard drive from the mounting bracket and replace it with a new drive.

This is a regular 2.5″ SATA hard drive.

Any large 2.5″ SATA hard drive should work fine in this laptop.

I think my guide should fit the following Sony Vaio models: VGN-NR110, VGN-NR115, VGN-NR123, VGN-NR140, VGN-NR160, VGN-NR180, VGN-NR185, VGN-NR220, VGN-NR240, VGN-NR260, VGN-NR270, VGN-NR280, VGN-NR285, VGN-NR290, VGN-NR295, VGN-NR298, VGN-NR305, VGN-NR310, VGN-NR320, VGN-NR330, VGN-NR360, VGN-NR380, VGN-NR385, VGN-NR398, VGN-NR420, VGN-NR430, VGN-NR460, VGN-NR475, VGN-NR480, VGN-NR485, VGN-NR490, VGN-NR498.

STEP 4.

Sony Vaio VGN-NW235F laptop has a regular CCFL backlight LCD screen with inverter board.

The inverter board mounted below the screen.

Carefully separate inverter board from the display cover and disconnect cables on both ends.

In this guide I explain how to remove and replace the keyboard in a Sony Vaio VGN-T350 (model PCG-4E1L) laptop.

You can use this guide for replacing the keyboard or accessing the internal memory slot which is located under the keyboard.

This guide might work for some other Sony Vaio VGN-T series laptops. Please mention the model number in comments below if it works for you.

Before you start, turn off the laptop and remove the battery.

STEP 1.

Remove three screws securing the keyboard on the bottom of the laptop.

STEP 2.

There are two latches securing the keyboard on the top.

They are located above the F5 key and NumLk key.

STEP 3.

Push on both keyboard latches with a small screwdriver and release the keyboard.

STEP 4.

Lift up the keyboard from the laptop case. Be careful, the keyboard is still attached to the motherboard.

STEP 5.

Turn the keyboard upside down and place on the palm rest.

Now you can access the keyboard cable connector which is located on the right side from the cooling fan.

When the keyboard is removed, you can access the memory slot. In this laptop you have to use PC2700 DDR333 microDIMM memory module (512MB maximum).

STEP 6.

Before you pull the keyboard cable form the connector, the connector has to be unlocked.

In order to unlock the connector, flip the left side of the brown locking clip up with your fingernail. The brown clip will pop up at a 90 degree angle.

After that you can remove the keyboard cable from the connector.

On the following picture the connector is shown in the unlocked position.

STEP 7.

Now you can remove the keyboard and replace it with a new one.

The best way to find a new replacement keyboard for your Sony Vaio VGN-T series laptop is searching by the laptop part number.

Search for the keyboard part number on the sticker. In my case the part number is 147898681. You can use this keyboard for Sony Vaio VGN-T150/T250/T350 laptops.

You can buy a new keyboard replacement here.

STEP 2.

Remove two rubber screw seals. You’ll find two screws hidden under those seals.

You can remove the screw seal with a sharp object. The bottom part of the seal is sticky. Glue the seal somewhere on the laptop so it doesn’t get lost.

STEP 3.

Start removing the keyboard/hinge cover from the laptop.

Be careful because the power button board and finger scan device are attached to the cover and connected to the motherboard via a flat ribbon cable.

STEP 4.

Remove the keyboard/hinge cover.

Now you can access the ribbon cable and disconnect it from the motherboard.

It might be not necessary to disconnect this cable, simply move the cover aside and secure it somehow. I’m showing how to disconnect the cable just for your convenience.

In order to disconnect the connector you’ll have to lift up the locking clip about 2 millimeters. After that you can pull the cable from the connector.

The locking clip (dark brown) must stat attached to the connector base (white).

STEP 5.

Remove three screws securing the keyboard.

There are two ribbon cables connecting the keyboard to the motherboard:

This guide will help you to remove and replace the keyboard in a Sony Vaio VGN-C series laptop.

I’m replacing the keyboard in a Sony Vaio VGN-C250N laptop but most likely you can use these instructions for the entire VGN-C line. If it works for your laptop, please mention the model number in comments below.

Also, I found another model number on the sticker: Model PCG-6R3L.

STEP 1.

Turn off the laptop and remove the battery.

Remove one screw securing the keyboard on the bottom.

STEP 2.

There are for small latches securing the keyboard on the top.

Push on latches with a small screwdriver and release the keyboard.

STEP 3.

Carefully lift up the keyboard and place it upside down on the palm rest.

STEP 4.

Now you can access the cable connector under the keyboard.

Unlock the connector first and after that pull the cable from the connector.

In order to unlock the connector carefully move the black clip to the direction shown by two arrows.

On the following picture the connector is shown in the unlocked position.

STEP 5.

Now you can pull the keyboard cable from the connector and remove the keyboard.

In my laptop the cable was glued to the laptop base with sticky tape, so I had to unglue the cable first.

Replace the keyboard with a new one.

You can search for a new keyboard using the part number. In my laptop the keyboard part number was 147996521.

Here you can find and new keyboard for Sony Vaio VGN-C series laptop.

In this guide I explain how to remove the keyboard and access both memory modules in a Sony Vaio PCG-V505 series laptop. The whole process will not take more than 10-15 minutes and can be done even by an inexperienced user. In one of the previous posts I explained how to remove and upgrade the hard drive in the same Sony Vaio PCG-V505 laptop.

Before you start do not forget to turn off the laptop and remove the battery.

STEP 1.

Remove one screw securing the keyboard. This screw is located between the lock/unlock and release latches.

STEP 2.

Insert a small flat head screwdriver between the keyboard and base. Carefully lift up the keyboard as it shown on the picture below.

STEP 3.

Move the keyboard and place it on the display panel so you can access components underneath.

Under the keyboard you’ll find both memory (RAM) modules and RTC (CMOS) battery.
Sony Vaio PCG-V505 laptop can handle up to 1GB memory total. You can install up to 512MB memory stick into each slot.
You should use PC2100/PC2700 DDR SODIMM memory modules.

If your laptop looses date and time each time you restart it, apparently it’s time to replace the RTC (CMOS) battery. You can easily unplug the RTC battery from the motherboard and replace it with a new one.

STEP 4.

Before you remove the keyboard, you’ll have to unlock the cable connector on the motherboard and release the cable.
On the picture below you can see the cable connector in the locked position.

Unlock the connector and release the keyboard cable.

Now you can remove the keyboard and replace it with a new one if needed.

You can find a new replacement keyboard here.
