<p><strong>STEP 1. </strong></p>
<p>There are six screw seals on the LCD screen bezel. Remove all six seals and screws found under them.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove screw covers from bezel" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Latitude-D620-LCD/remove-replace-lcd-screen-01.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>You can remove the screw seal with a sharp object or small flat head screwdriver. The seal bottom is sticky. Glue all screw seals somewhere on the screen bezel so they don&#8217;t get lost.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove screws from bezel" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Latitude-D620-LCD/remove-replace-lcd-screen-02.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>

<p><strong>STEP 4.</strong></p>
<p>Remove six screws securing the LCD screen mounting brackets to the display cover.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove screws securing LCD screen" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Latitude-D620-LCD/remove-replace-lcd-screen-05.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>

<p><strong>STEP 6.</strong></p>
<p>Now you can access the back side of the LCD screen and video cable.</p>
<p>The video cable has two connectors. One of them is connected to the inverter board and another one to the LCD screen.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Access video cable" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Latitude-D620-LCD/remove-replace-lcd-screen-07.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>

<p><strong>STEP 10.</strong></p>
<p>If you are replacing the LCD screen, you&#8217;ll have to transfer both mounting brackets to the new screen. Each bracket is secured by a few screws.</p>
<p>In Dell laptops the inverter board is attached to the bottom of the LCD screen.</p>

<p>In this guide I remove the motherboard and repair the DC power jack in a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop. You can use same instructions for Dell Inspiron 1300 and Inspiron B120 laptops. All three models have same type of body.</p>
<p>In my case the power jack started failing intermittently. The laptop started switching from AC to battery power on its own. In order to switch it back to the AC power I had to fiddle with the adapter plug and find the right position. I tested the laptop with another adapter and it failed exactly the same way. I came to a conclusion that the DC power jack is not making good contact with the motherboard and has to be repaired.</p>
<p>In Dell Inspiron 1300/B120/B130 laptop the DC power jack is soldered to the motherboard. If the jack is broken, you&#8217;ll have to unsolder it and replace with a new jack.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s start removing the motherboard.</p>
<p><span id="more-551"></span></p>
<p><script type="text/javascript"><!--
google_ad_client = "pub-5093339941473059";

google_ad_height = 280;
// --></script><br />
<script src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js" type="text/javascript"></script></p>
<p><strong>STEP 1. </strong></p>
<p>Check out <a rel="nofollow" href="http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&amp;pub=5574673312&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5335918710&amp;customid=Inspiron+1300-B120-B130+spare+parts&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%2Fi.html%3F_nkw%3DInspiron%2B1300%2BB120%2BB130%26_sacat%3D0%26_trksid%3Dp3286.m270.l1313%26_odkw%3DInspiron%2BB130%2Bjack%26_osacat%3D0" target="_blank">spare parts for Dell Inspiron 1300/B120/B130</a>.</p>
<p>Before you start taking the laptop apart, do not forget to turn off the power and remove the battery.</p>
<p>Lift up the right side of the keyboard cover with a small screwdriver and continue removing the cover with your fingers.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove keyboard bezel" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-02.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 2.</strong></p>
<p>After the cover is removed you can access two screws securing the keyboard. Remove both screws.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove screws from keyboard" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-03.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 3.</strong></p>
<p>Lift up the keyboard and place it upside down on the palm rest.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Lift up keyboard" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-04.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 4.</strong></p>
<p>Now you can access the cable connector and release the cable.</p>

<p><strong>STEP 5.</strong></p>
<p>Unlock the connector, pull the cable and remove the keyboard.</p>
<p>On the following picture the connector is displayed in the unlocked position.</p>

<p><strong>STEP 13.</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s not necessary to remove both memory modules and wireless card for the purpose of this guide but you have to disconnect the Wi-Fi antenna cable.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove memory and wireless cards" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-14.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>

<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove and clean heat sink" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-16.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 16.</strong></p>
<p>Remove all marked screws from the bottom of the laptop.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove screws from bottom" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-17.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 17.</strong></p>
<p>Remove eight screws securing the top cover.<br />
Disconnect the touch pad cable.<br />

<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove screws securing top cover" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-18.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>In this model the lid close switch is discrete module and mounted under the fight hinge.<br />
If the lid close switch failed, you can remove it and replace with a new one or simply unplug the faulty switch from the motherboard and use the laptop without it.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Lid close switch" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-19.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 18.</strong></p>

<p><strong>STEP 19.</strong></p>
<p>Remove five screws securing the motherboard.<br />
Disconnect the speaker cable from the motherboard.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove screws from motherboard" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-21.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 20.</strong></p>
<p>Start removing the motherboard from the right side as it shown on the picture below.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Lift up motherboard" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-22.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 21.</strong></p>
<p>Remove motherboard from the laptop base.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove motherboard from base" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-23.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>The DC power jack is soldered directly to the motherboard.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="DC power jack soldered to motherboard" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-24.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>I assumed that the power jack is not making good contact with the motherboard and I was correct.</p>
<p>As you see, there is a crack in the solder joint around the &#8220;+&#8221; pin.<br />
The &#8220;+&#8221; pin got oxidized and not making good contact with the motherboard.</p>
<p>If you resolder the jack without cleaning the &#8220;+&#8221; pin, your repair will not last.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="DC power jack failing" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-1300-B120-B130/power-jack-repair-25.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>It is necessary to unsloder the power jack, clean all contacts and solder it back to the motherboard.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll find more detailed instructing in this <a title="How to repair failed power jack in laptop" href="http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/06/dc-power-jack-repair-guide/" target="_blank">guide for fixing failed DC power jack in a laptop</a>.</p>

<p>In this guide I will help you to remove and replace the cooling fan in a Dell Latitude D600 laptop. The cooling fan in this model is buried deep inside the laptop under the top cover. Also you can use this guide for cleaning the cooling module and removing dust from the heat sink and fan.</p>
<p>If your laptops shuts down on its own without any warning, most likely it happens because of overheating. Make sure the cooling fan works and the heat sink is not clogged with dust. Replace the fan if it failed or clean the heat sink if it&#8217;s clogged.</p>
<p>Before you start, turn off the laptop, unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery.</p>
<p>When you are replacing the cooling fan, it is not necessary to remove memory, hard drive, wireless card or optical drive. I did that only because I was upgrading the laptop.</p>

<p>When the keyboard is removed you&#8217;ll get access to the memory module installed into the hidden slot. You can replace or upgrade laptop memory if you wish.</p>
<p>Also, you&#8217;ll get limited access to the cooling fan. It would be enough for cleaning the fan. You can blow off dust from the fan using canned air or air compressor.</p>

<p><strong>STEP 1.</strong></p>
<p>Turn off the laptop and remove the battery.<br />
Remove couple of screws securing the memory cover. Remove the cover.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove memory cover" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9300/remove-upgrade-ram-memory-02.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 2.</strong></p>
<p>Under the cover you&#8217;ll find two slots. In my case both slots are occupied by two 256MB PC2-4200 RAM modules.<br />
In order to remove the memory module you&#8217;ll have to carefully spread latches on the sides. The memory module will pop up at a 20-30 degree angle.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Spread latches " src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9300/remove-upgrade-ram-memory-03.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p><strong>STEP 3.</strong></p>
<p>Pull the memory module from the slot. Do the same with the second module.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Pull old memory module" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9300/remove-upgrade-ram-memory-04.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>You can install up to 2GB RAM in a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. Each slot can take up to 1GB module.  You can use DDR-2 PC2-4200, PC-5300 or PC2-6400 modules.<br />
In my case I&#8217;m using two 1GB PC2-5300 modules. You can find <a rel="nofollow" href="http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&amp;pub=5574673312&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5335918710&amp;customid=Inspiron+9300+memory+upgrade&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp3907.m38.l1313%26_nkw%3D1GB%2BDDR2%2BSODIMM%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories" target="_blank">cheap memory upgrades here</a>.</p>
<p>By the way, you can install different size modules into different slots. For example, you can keep one of the 256MB modules in one slot and install a new 1GB module into the second slot. In this case the laptop will see 1.25GB.</p>
<p><strong>STEP 4.</strong></p>
<p>Install new memory modules into the memory slots. New memory should be detected and configured automatically. You don&#8217;t have to change anything in the laptop settings.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Install new memoru modules" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9300/remove-upgrade-ram-memory-05.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>When you turn on the laptop, it will display the following message: &#8220;The amount of system memory has changed.&#8221;<br />
The laptop may freeze temporarily at this screen. Do not turn it off, just wait.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Message after memory replacement" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9300/remove-upgrade-ram-memory-06.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="194" /></p>
<p>After a while, you&#8217;ll get another message: &#8220;Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility&#8221;.<br />
If you press on F1, the laptop will start loading Windows.<br />
If you press on F2, it will take it to the BIOS setup menu.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Memory configured" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9300/remove-upgrade-ram-memory-07.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="172" /></p>
<p>In the BIOS setup menu you can confirm that both memory modules are detected and recognized correctly.</p>
<p>As you see, in my case the BIOS sees 2GB RAM  running at 533MHz.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Check memory size in BIOS" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9300/remove-upgrade-ram-memory-08.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="261" /></p>

<p>In the following guide I will take apart a Dell Vostro 1510 notebook. You can use this guide for removing almost all internal parts from the notebook base. I think these instructions might work for some other Dell Vostro notebooks, not just a Vostro 1510. If it fits your laptop, please mention the model in the comments below.</p>
<p><span id="more-423"></span>If you need spare parts for your Vostro 1510 laptop, you can search for <a rel="nofollow" href="http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&amp;pub=5574673312&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5335918710&amp;customid=Dell+Vostro+1510+parts&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%2Fitems%2F%3F_nkw%3DDell%2BVostro%2B1510%26_sacat%3D0%26_trksid%3Dp3286.m270.l1313%26_odkw%3DVostro%2B1510%26_osacat%3D0" target="_blank">used and new parts here</a>.</p>

<p>In this guide I&#8217;ll be removing the LCD screen and inverter board from a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. You can use same set of instructions for a Dell Inspiron E1705 and probably some other Dell laptops. If my guide works for you, please mention the laptop model in the comments below.</p>
<p><span id="more-418"></span>Need a new LCD screen for your Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop? google_ad_height = 280;
// --></script></p>
<p><script src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js" type="text/javascript"></script></p>
<p>Like in most other laptops, in this model the LCD screen is mounted between the display cover and front bezel. You&#8217;ll find eight screw seals on the front bezel. Six rubber seals (red circles) and two plastic seals (green circles).</p>
<p>Remove rubber seals using a sharp object. Glue these seals somewhere on the front bezel so they don&#8217;t get lost.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove rubber seal" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9400-LCD/removing-screen-inverter-02.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>Remove two plastic seals using the same tool. Also, glue them somewhere on the front bezel.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove plastic seal" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9400-LCD/removing-screen-inverter-03.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>Remove all eight screws found under the seals.</p>
<p>When all screws are removed you can start separating the front bezel from the display cover.  Use your fingers and a piece of soft plastic. In this guide I&#8217;m using a guitar pick.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Separate screen bezel from cover" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9400-LCD/removing-screen-inverter-04.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>Continue separating the front bezel.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Continue removing screen bezel" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9400-LCD/removing-screen-inverter-05.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>The front bezel has been removed.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Screen bezel removed" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9400-LCD/removing-screen-inverter-06.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>There are screws securing the LCD screen to the hinge bracket. You&#8217;ll find four screws on each side.</p>
<p>Remove four screw on one side of the display panel.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Remove screws from side of LCD" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9400-LCD/removing-screen-inverter-07.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>And after that remove four screws on the other side of the panel.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Screws on other side LCD" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9400-LCD/removing-screen-inverter-08.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>Now you can separate the LCD screen assembly from the cover.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Separate LCD screen assembly from cover" src="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Dell-Inspiron-9400-LCD/removing-screen-inverter-09.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>Be careful, there is a video cable connecting the LCD screen and inverter board to the motherboard.<br />
Place the LCD screen on the palm rest so you can access the video cable and unplug it from the LCD screen and inverter.</p>

<p>Carefully remove the inverter board from the metal casing and replace it with a new one if needed. You can buy a new inverter board <a rel="nofollow" href="http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&amp;pub=5574673312&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5335918710&amp;customid=Inspiron+9400+inverter&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%2Fitems%2F%3F_nkw%3DInspiron%2B9400%2Binverter%26_sacat%3D0%26_trksid%3Dp3286.m270.l1313%26_odkw%3DInspiron%2B9400%2Bscreen%26_osacat%3D0" target="_blank">here for about $15-20.</a><br />

I mentioned Inspiron E1705 laptop because it has the same body and the keyboard replacement instructions should be identical for both models.</p>

<p>Before you start, turn off the power, remove the battery and remove the AC adapter.</p>
<p><strong>STEP 1.</strong></p>
<p>Open up the display as far as it goes.<br />
Insert a small flat head screwdriver between the keyboard cover and laptop base and carefully lift up the cover.</p>

<p><strong>STEP 4.</strong></p>
<p>The keyboard is connected to the motherboard via a flat ribbon cable. Before you can release the cable and remove the keyboard, the connector must be unlocked.</p>
<p>Be very careful. The keyboard connector is permanently attached to the motherboard. If you accidentally damage the connector, you&#8217;ll have to replace the whole motherboard.</p>

<p>My <a href="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/upgrading-dell-inspiron-e1705-9400-graphics-card-memory/">previous post</a> explains how to add more memory and upgrade the video card. In one of the next posts I&#8217;ll explain how to disassemble the display panel and replace the LCD screen.</p>
<p>If you are replacing the keyboard because of missing or broken keys, check out my previous post about <a href="http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-individual-keyboard-keys-instructions-for-different-laptops/">fixing individual keyboard keys</a>. Maybe it&#8217;s not necessary to replace the whole keyboard.</p>
