In this guide I show how to replace LCD screen on HP Pavilion dv4 laptop.

HP Pavilion dv4 laptop comes with two different types of screens installed:
1. LCD screen with CCFL backlight (requires screen inverter).
2. LCD screen with LED backlight.

In this guide I’ll be replacing LCD with CCFL backlihgt.

Also you can use this guide for replacing LED LCDs but they don’t have inverter boards so you’ll have to skip steps 8 and 9.

Before you start make sure the laptop is turned off.

STEP 1.

Remove the laptop battery.

STEP 2.

Remove the screw cover located in the lower left corner of the display.

Remove one screw securing the screen bezel on the left side.

STEP 3.

Remove the screw cover located in the lower right corner of the display.

Remove one screw securing the screen bezel on the right side.

STEP 4.

Separate the top side of the screen bezel from the display cover.

STEP 5.

Continue removing the screen bezel.

STEP 6.

When the top side of the bezel separated from the display cover, move to the lower part.

Lift up one side of the bezel with a small screwdriver.

Work slowly. There are hidden latches securing the bezel. Try not to break all of them.

STEP 7.

Remove the screen bezel.

STEP 8.

As I mentioned before, this HP Pavilion dv4 laptop has a CCFL LCD screen which requires an inverter board.

The screen inverter mounted on the lower part of the display assembly.

STEP 9.

There are a few plastic tabs securing the inverter board.

Lift up the inverter board and disconnect cables on both sides of the inverter.

Remove the inverter.

STEP 10.

Remove two screws securing the LCD screen on the top.

STEP 11.

Loosen (do not removed) three screw securing the left hinge.

STEP 12.

Loosen (do not removed) three screw securing the right hinge.

STEP 13.

Now you should be able to separate the LCD screen from the display cover just enough to access screws on both sides of the LCD screen.

Remove four screws securing the LCD screen on the right side.

STEP 14.

Remove four more screws securing the LCD screen on the left side.

STEP 16.

The web camera module still attached to the LCD screen.

The web camera IS NOT a part of the screen but it’s attached to the screen by two sticky aluminum strips.

Disconnect the web camera cable on the left side.

STEP 17.

Separate the web camera module from the screen.

STEP 18.

Place the screen face down on the keyboard.

The back side of the LCD screen covered with aluminum foil shielding.

STEP 19.

Lift up the shielding so you can access the video cable.

Remove sticky tape securing the connection and unplug the video cable from the LCD screen.

STEP 21.

Now you can remove the LCD screen.

New LCD screen from HP Pavilion dv4 laptops available here.

Don’t forget that this laptop comes with two different screen types: CCFL backlit LCD screen and LED backlit LCD screen.

Make sure the find the correct type of screen for your laptop.

In this guide I will disassemble a HP Pavilion g6 laptop.

In this particular case I’m taking apart a HP Pavilion g6-1c55nr but the guide should fit all models in Pavilion g6 line.

This guide explains hot to disassemble laptop base. In the next guide I’ll explain how to remove and replace the screen.

STEP 1.

As always start laptop disassembly with removing the battery.

STEP 2.

Remove two screws securing the bottom cover.

Lift up and remove the cover.

STEP 3.

Under the bottom cover you’ll find the following components:
- hard drive.
- memory modules (in my case I have only one 4GB module installed).
- wireless card.
- CMOS battery (standard 3V battery).

STEP 4.

Slide the hard drive to the left and disconnect it from the motherboard.

Lift up and remove the hard drive.

HP Pavilion g6 laptop uses a regular 2.5″ SATA hard drive.

STEP 5.

Remove the memory module.

HP Pavilion g6 laptop uses DDR3 memory

STEP 6.

Remove one screw securing the optical drive (DVD drive).

Pull DVD drive from the laptop and remove it.

STEP 7.

Remove one screw securing the keyboard on the bottom of the laptop.

This screw located close to the wireless card.

STEP 8.

The keyboard secured by five spring loaded latches on the top.

It could be tricky to release those latches. I’ll try my best to explain the process.

Using a small flat head screwdriver push the latch inside the case. At the same time lift up the keyboard a little bit.

When the keyboard lifted up it doesn’t allow the latch to lock again.

Do the same with all remaining latches.

In this guide I explain how to replace broken screen on HP 2000 laptop. In my case the screen was accidentally damaged and the image disappeared completely.

To be precise, I’m working on an HP 2000-210US laptop.

I would suggest making some notes during the disassembly process about screw locations. Some screws have different length. Your notes will be helpful when you assemble the laptop back together.

Turn off the laptop and remove the battery.

STEP 1.

Using a sharp object remove the screw cover located in the lower left corner of the display.

Remove the screw.

STEP 2.

Remove the screw cover in the lower right corner.

Remove the screw.

STEP 3.

Insert your fingers between the LCD screen bezel and back cover and start separating the bezel.

STEP 4.

Remove the screen bezel.

STEP 5.

Remove one screw securing the left hinge cover.

STEP 6.

Using a small screwdriver pull the hing cover and remove it.

STEP 7.

Remove one screw securing the right hinge cover.

STEP 8.

Remove the right hinge cover.

STEP 9.

Remove six screws securing the LCD screen assembly to the display cover.

STEP 10.

Separate back cover from the LCD screen.

STEP 11.

Now you can access the video cable connector located on the back side of the screen.

STEP 12.

Remove clear tape securing the connection.

Disconnect the video cable connector from the LCD screen connector.

STEP 13.

Remove three screws securing the LCD screen to the right hinge bracket.

Remove three more screws on the left side.

STEP 14.

Now you can remove and replace the damaged LCD screen.

When you are searching for a new replacement screen, do not confuse HP 2000 with HP dv2000. They are two different models.

Assemble the laptop back together following instructions from step 14 to step 1.

I had some trouble connecting the screen bezel to the cover on the lower part of the display. The bezel didn’t click back on place.

Here’s how I did it.

I placed the laptop upside down and pushed on the screen bezel with a plastic stick. While pushing on the bezel, I moved the stick from one side to another and the screen bezel clicked back in place.

In this guide I explain how to disassemble an HP ENVY 15 notebook. My goal is removing and replacing failed keyboard (a few keys stopped working).

In HP ENVY 15 notebook the keyboard is mounted to the top cover assembly. After the top cover assembly removed, you’ll be able to access the hard drive, internal memory modules, all three cooling fans and CMOS battery.

Before you start taking it apart, make sure the notebook is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

Remove three screws securing the memory cover.

STEP 2.

Remove the cover.

STEP 3.

Remove four rubber feet. They are glued to the laptop case with double sticky tape.

STEP 4.

Remove all screws from the bottom of the notebook.

STEP 5.

Now you can lift up and separate the top cover assembly from the notebook base.

STEP 6.

Be careful. There are cables connecting the top cover assembly to the motherboard.

You’ll have to disconnect those cables before removing the top cover assembly.

1. LED board cable.
2. Touchpad cable.
3. Keyboard cable.

STEP 7.

Unplug the LED board cable connector from the motherboard.

STEP 8.

Pull the touchpad cable from the connector on the motherboard.

This connector has no locking mechanism.

STEP 9.

In order to remove the keyboard cable you’ll have to unlock the connector first.

On the following picture the connector is shown in the locked position.

STEP 10.

Very carefully lift up the brown locking tab about 2-3 millimeters.

The locking tab must stay attached to the connector base.

On the following picture the keyboard connector shown in the unlocked position.

STEP 11.

Now you can pull the keyboard cable from the connector.

STEP 12.

After all cables I mentioned in the step 6 are disconnected, you can remove the top cover assembly.

STEP 13.

When the top cover removed, you can access:
- notebook hard drive.
- all internal memory modules/slots. HP ENVY 15 notebook has four memory slots.
- CMOS battery.
- all three cooling fans.

STEP 14.

The keyboard is mounted to the top cover assembly and covered with black protective film.

STEP 15.

Remove the black film.

STEP 16.

Remove 60 (yes, sixty) tiny screws securing the keyboard to the top cover.

STEP 17.

After all screws removed, you’ll be able to lift up and remove the keyboard.

STEP 18.

Replace failed/damaged keyboard with a new one.

You can search for a new keyboard using the HP part number.

HP ENVY 15 notebook have keyboards with bronze finish and black finish.

Here are keyboard part numbers I found in the official service manual:

Keyboards with bronze finish:
■ For use in the United Kingdom and Singapore 580132-031
■ For use in the United States 580132-001

When I purchased a brand new keyboard (for use in the USA), it came with new screws and black Mylar shield (black protective film).

If your keyboard doesn’t have screws and Mylar shield, you’ll have to purchase it separately or reuse old screws and shield. Here’s HP part number for keyboard hardware kit (includes Mylar shield and screws): 576836-001

In this guide I explain how to take apart a HP Pavilion dv8 laptop. I’m taking it apart in order to replace failed DC jack.

The LED light on the DC jack started flickering when adapter plug moved. I tested laptop with another known good AC adapter but it didn’t fix the problem. I assumed this is DC jack related failure and decided to replace it.

I believe that HP Pavilion dv8 laptop have many different flavors. It’s possible that your laptop will be a little bit different but most disassembly steps should be very similar.

Before you start, make sure the laptop is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

Loosen six screws securing the Wi-Fi and Hard drive/Memory covers.

Remove both covers.

STEP 2.

My HP pavilion dv8 laptop had two hard drives installed. By the way, they are regular 2.5″ SATA hard drives.

Disconnect the hard drive cable from the motherboard. Lift up and remove the whole hard drive assembly.

STEP 3.

Remove the second hard drive.

Also, you can see the CMOS battery located close to the second hard drive.

STEP 4.

HP Pavilion dv8 laptop has two memory slots (like most laptops) and both slots accessible though the door we removed in the step 1.

In order to remove the memory module spread latches on both sides of the memory slot. The memory module will pop up at a 30 degree angle.

Remove both memory modules.

STEP 5.

Remove one screw securing the DVD drive.

Pull DVD drive from the laptop.

NOTE: in my laptop the DVD drive face plate was missing. Normally, the DVD drive will have the face plate attached to the front of the drive.

STEP 6.

Disconnect both antenna cables from the wireless card.

Remove two screws securing the wireless card.

Remove the wireless card.

STEP 7.

Remove six (red) screws securing the speaker cover.

Remove two (yellow) screws securing the keyboard.

STEP 8.

Carefully lift up one side of the speaker cover with a sharp object.

Remove the cover with your fingers.

STEP 9.

Carefully lift up one side of the keyboard bezel.

STEP 10.

Continue separating the keyboard bezel from the laptop.

Be careful, the bezel has LED board built in. There is a cable connecting the LED board to the motherboard.

Turn the keyboard bezel upside down so you can access the LED board connector underneath.

STEP 11.

Here’s how you unlock the LED board cable connector.

Move the brown tab about 2 millimeters to the direction shown by two yellow arrows. DO NOT move it any further.

The brown tab must stay attached to the connector base.

STEP 15.

Lift up the keyboard and move it towards the LCD screen.

Now you can access the keyboard cable connector underneath.

Before you remove the keyboard, it’s necessary to unlock the connector and release the cable.

STEP 16.

In order to unlock the keyboard cable connector lift up the outer side of the brown tab at a 90 degree angle.

STEP 18.

Remove the keyboard.

Need a new keyboard? New replacement keyboards for HP Pavilion dv8 laptops available here.

STEP 19.

Disconnect all cables i pointed with yellow arrows (from left to right):
- video cable (aka LCD screen cable.
- webcam/microfilm cable.
- USB board cable.
- DC jack (power) cable.
- pull wireless card antenna cables though the opening in the top cover.

STEP 20.

Remove four screws securing display hinges.

STEP 21.

Lift up and remove the display panel assembly.

STEP 22.

Remove all screws from the bottom of the laptop.

STEP 23.

Disconnect all cables I pointed with yellow arrows (from left to right):

- power button board cable.
- touch pad board cable.
- speaker cable.
- LED board cable.
- touch pad on/off button cable.

Remove five screws securing the top cover assembly.

STEP 24.

Start separating the top cover assembly from the bottom cover.

When you lift up the top cover don’t forget to disconnect the finger print device cable (pointed with yellow arrow).

STEP 25.

Remove the top cover assembly.

STEP 26.

The top cover has been removed.

As you know, my goal is replacing the DC jack which is located in the upper right corner.

STEP 27.

Remove one screw securing the metal bracket to the bottom case.

Lift up and remove the bracket.

STEP 28.

Finally, lift up the DC jack.

As you see, in HP Pavilion dv8 laptop the DC jack is not soldered to the motherboard. It’s attached to the harness.

We unplugged the DC jack harness from the motherboard earlier, in the step 19.

Now you can remove the failed DC jack and replace it with a new one.

You can find a new replacement DC jack harness here. Instead of buying just the DC jack itself, I would recommend buying the whole harness (jack and cable). In this case you don’t have to solder anything.

I’m not going to disassemble this laptop any further but it shouldn’t be difficult.

In order to remove the motherboard you’ll have to remove two screws and disconnect one cable (maybe more cables if you have a different Pavilion dv8 model).

After that you should be able to lift up and remove the motherboard.

The cooling fan can be accessed and replaced only after the motherboard is removed.

STEP 5.

Now separate screen bezel on the bottom part of the display assembly.

The screen bezel might be glued to the screen. Work slowly and carefully.
