I have an HP notebook that I dropped 2 days ago. It was working perfectly before the drop. The drop was about 2 feet onto concrete and it landed very squarely along the back edge. The symptoms are as follow – a nearly black screen with a faint image – which becomes brighter with reflected light.
I hooked up to my PC screen and everything is working well.
In this case, could it just be the backlight bulb has broken upon impact? Or perhaps something has shaken loose?
There is no simple answer to this question. If you want to narrow down the problem yourself, you’ll have to open up the display panel and reseat the video cable on both ends of the inverter board. It is possible you have no backlight because of a loose connection. If reseating connectors will not help then most likely the backlight bulb has been damaged.
The ideal test would be connecting a test backlight lamp and see if it lights up. If you have no test lamp you’ll have to guess.
